    I free ranged my first batch of chickens, within a few weeks they were roosting in a tree at night and not coming back to the coop. Eggs were impossible to find, the hens went broody, and eventually got eaten or ran away. So that was end of that.

      Freezer camp is a good solution for 3 yr old chickens. A new batch of hens can turn the compost just as well.

    I'd love to be able to do what y'all do with the chickens working the compost but the electric fence netting is way out of our price range, it's over half our monthly income. So we just let them, the guineas and our one turkey for now free range our 3.4 acres which does have down falls, mainly predators. Our LGD is still in training which has taken a 4 month break due to my health (Hospitalized) so he doesn't run with them, he likes to chase. He runs at night and goes in a large outdoor kennel to sleep during the day.

      Oh man I totally get that. And I’d say you could use any type of fence. Doesn’t have to be the electric netting. In fact we are only using it because we bought it for a good deal.
      But it’s not even electrified right now! Hahaha.

    First thing I thought, while you talked about the heat & water, was to find an open area and build a simple frame with a large roof area. Its only purpose would be to collect additional rainwater, when it rains, and to provide a shaded area for roaming animals. Also, think foresight, in case of fire.

    I went to the bear ranch to see how they kept bears in. Figured I would build a chicken coup to keep bears out. The weasels and fisher cats are greatest threat to chickens where I am at.

    Great video. My wife and I have been looking for our own homestead. Problem is I need internet to work. Found one in Marietta Texas until our research found the town was being taken over by a CULT. UGH 😮

      I mean, some people think the homesteading community is a cult too. Lol!!! Kidding.
      Just be patient and you’ll find a great property!!

      @thegraymarlin 10 месяцев назад

      @revelatoryartist - look further south. COL is way lower and starlink is readily available in our rural communities down here. We are outside corpus and I work from home. Good luck in your search! You will find the property of your dreams I’m sure!
