Because if you go to a European beach almost everyone is wearing a speedo. In the US and UK almost no one wears them.
I have never been to Finland (apparently Finland is a big deal?), but in France, Italy, Germany, Croatia, and Spain that is all they wear.
And America is many different cultures. I mean, from Canada to Argentina cultures are very diverse too.

I also like men long and lean! Just bc they are lean, doesn't mean they don't have muscle. They are fit and healthy, have definition and don't look artificially bulked up! Point taken, yet of all the countries in Europe, only a handful are famous for the "speedos thing". Many of us Europeans mock the middle aged men seen around say, the French Riviera or Sardinia for their choice of beach clothing.
He was probably more referring to how so many Finish spent a lot of time in saunas. [Where nudity is not really common, so many of them use swimwear.]
I'm half Italian, living in Italy. I'd say 1 to 100 wear speedos. It's mostly just normal beach boxers. And i've been going to the beach since 2000.

We say European because many of the fashions are not confined to just one country. While each country is different, the "speedo thing" isn't just an, say, Italian or French thing to do. So, instead of saying "Speedos are an Italian thing", which would exclude the other countries, we just say European. The same way many Europeans say, "Those Americans REALLY love their guns". While not all of us like guns, some of us do and they're spread out across the country and not just in one state.
It's still a pretty weird thing to say considering the "speedo thing" is just in a few countries out of almost 50.

Some states are more important than others. I could name them all when off the top of my head when I was in grammar school because it was required, I might miss a couple now. I certainly doubt most Europeans could name more states than I could European countries.

I don't get this American aversion to speedos... lol Have you ever gotten out of the water wearing baggy shorts? No way that speedos look more ridiculous than wet, heavy, baggy shorts attached to your skin even tighter than lycra. Also in tanning, it's much preferable to have legs that are one color than having the suntan line in the middle of your thigh or knee! They're so much more comfortable and practical too. Come on, America, get some sense...
