Make fitness and health your number one hobby in retirement, it's better than money. We're still mountain biking and kite surfing across the west and Mexico and currently building a spectacular house with a billion dollar view overlooking the Sea of Cortes in Baja for less than $100K. After living in Shasta county for 15 years Baja is wonderfully cool in comparison!
Why are so many large ranch and farms going up for sale in CA? Has market topped out or are the owners getting concerned with the uncertainties of nature?
Beautiful area, but you're very isolated ( which I like) but you're not going to have access a lot of luxuries and healthcare is probably hit and miss as Redding is the only town of size.

A few of my law enforcement partners and our families could finally relax and not have to watch over our shoulders when we retire next year! They keep using the term ranch but I've yet to see any animals. Ranch requires a livestock that are being managed. This is what Rich out of touch people's ranches look like

This is a "hobby" ranch, not a large operation. Probably some rich dude from SoCal trying to play cowboy
It's almost impossible to get fire insurance in California, and if you can it will be extremely expensive.

Cost of living taxes are the problem along with the high level of crime and dumb politics that why everyone who has money is leaving
Probably getting old and young investors are buying up land in rural areas and probably working remote too.
Getting fire insurance for a place this size is going to be very expensive if Hawaii can catch fire then can you imagine where this place is at
