  • The woolly mammoth is coming back. How the most brilliant geneticist of our time is working to bring back the woolly mammoth, to repopulate the Siberian tundra and save the world.
    Tags: science, extinction, climate change, genetics, crispr Author of twelve books, Ben Mezrich has created his own highly addictive genre of nonfiction, chronicling the amazing stories of young geniuses making tons of money on the edge of impossibility, ethics, and morality.
    Mezrich is best known for Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions, which was his first book. It tells the story of a group of students from MIT using a sophisticated card counting system at casino to bet on blackjack games, winning millions of dollars. In 2008 the story was made into the movie “21”.
    In 2010, Aaron Sorkin adapted Mezrich’s book, The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding Of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, the movie The Social Network. The book, written in 2009, debuted at No. 4 on the New York Times Nonfiction Bestseller List, and No. 1 on the Boston Globe Nonfiction Bestseller List. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      Lollypop Narcy no. The melting permafrost is a very real and very severe problem. In theory we can stop it without mammoths but mammoths would save time and effort and would also be a natural solution.

      Wearethepeople Wearelegion we used to have giant tortoises on many small islands, not only in Galapagos
      But sadly, in the old times, they don't have refrigerators on their ship so, to have meat on the ship, they overhunt all the giant tortoises for food supply, until they're all extinct
      If we can actually bring back mammoths, I wish to have those poor tortoises back on their island as well

      Unlikely; the only thing that may allow us to recreate wooly mammoths is their frozen carcasses that we can use to bring them back. Most other cenozoic-extinct animals would probably not be found frozen.

    Back in 1980, when I was 12 years old, I was reading an encyclopedia and came across a painting by Charles R. Knight. The painting featured woolly mammoths and woolly rhinos. I was amazed at the similarities between the woolly mammoths and today's elephants. Mammoths are much bigger, have longer tusks, and have woolly bodies. Ever since I read about mammoths for the first time, I have had a fascination with them. Several years later, I just happened to be online, and came across a website about the possibility of scientists bringing back the woolly mammoth. I don't know if this is even possible, but just thinking about it is exciting! While the 12 year old girl in me is excited about this and hopes it will happen, the 51 year old woman in me is curious and has questions. Would the woolly mammoth be able to survive in today's world? They would have to live in cold, icy parts of the world, such as the Arctic region. Would they be able to survive on the plants that grow in the world today? Were the plants that grew during the Ice Age the same as the ones that grow today, or were they different? It would be great if the woolly mammoth could be brought back, but these questions are definitely worth considering. Only time will tell if we can bring these magnificent creatures back into existence. How exciting would that be?

    If you create a woolly mammoth, who will teach it to act like a woolly mammoth? Essentially, it will have all the instincts and social education of an Asian elephant. Creating it won’t be the hard part, it will be getting the animal to do what it’s ancient predecessors knew how to do from instinct. Obviously, the permafrost situation needs a solution quickly, but I’m not sure genetically engineered elephants are the answer.

      I understand what your saying, but I have seen this being done befor with eagles. In some parts of the world eagles went extinct because of hunting and deforestation (and other reasons), and that led to a rise in wildlife that effected the enviroment very badly. So scinentists brought eagle eggs and tought the hatchlings how to fly, hunt, breed, feed their hatchlings and all the rest using puppets and other tecniques.
      mammoth sized puppets are a little to hard to pull off but the point is there is all ways a way...

    I’m not entirely opposed to bringing back the woolly mammoth, but I think it would be more beneficial if they introduce Asian elephants to a colder environment, slowly allow them to adapt and then release them into the Pleistocene Park (they will have to be provided with food and shelter at first, but could eventually be left to their own devices). That way, the species’ range will be extended and a large enough herd will be established to actually prevent the permafrost from melting.

    • @nicholastine9231
      @nicholastine9231 Год назад

      Asian elephants can survive in moderately cold regions, but the kind of adaptions your speaking about to get them to the point of surviving in the artic circle would take tens of thousand’s possiblly hundreds of thousands of years, it’s just not feasible
