Their manifesto in the 1945 election was ambitious and radical and it won them a lot of support as people wanted to go in a different direction after the war. Also, while Churchill was popular, the Conservatives were nowhere near as popular and they were associated with high unemployment in the 1930's.
Churchill basically ran on the premise "We won the war" but people thought he was a good wartime leader but not so much a peacetime leader, besides the conservatives were blamed with appeasement (basically giving Hitler whatever countries he wants to prevent war but it actually causes it)

FPTP is very strange. Even worse when you look at smaller parties like Lib Dems, Reform and Greens.
Labour were incredibly efficient with their vote, winning 64% of seats with just 34% of the vote. That's FPTP
