  • I shot a bit of a longer video but it's an important one. I'm going over how I've been breaking apart and studying all the material that is being tossed our way. Compared to the WSET Level 2, the Level 3 Advanced is like drinking from a fire hose. I hope the things that I'm doing to get into a study routine help you too!

Thank you thank you so much for the study tips! ❤ I've been prepping for Level 2 by making flash cards, downloading maps, doing as many practice tests as I can find, and of course tasting wine. I downloaded some wine quiz apps just so I have something to do while I'm out. There's an official WSET game on iOS where you have to find the regions in the map, but it's very limited. I will try that geography game you made up, though. Sounds fun. It needs to be turned into a card game stat. Haha!

I'm glad that it's been helpful! I've been debating on how to implement some of my study items. I'll keep working at it.

Good luck with your studies, flashcards worked great for me. I had the old book so it may be arranged differently but for regions you may find it helpful to break them down into they key 8 areas with 4 natural and 4 interventional: Climate (+ weather) grapes, soil, aspect. Viticulture, viniculture, maturation, market. I jotted this down in the exam and made sure I covered at least a point for each.

Really like the idea of having people send you labels. Going to co-opt that. I enjoy the r/wine subreddit - tons of random labels posted by people from around the world. You have to open the post to read the tasting notes, so you could hypothetically quiz yourself first.

That is super awesome! Thank you VERY MUCH for letting everyone know that exist. That's a great way to use those posts. I'm in a lot of different places but, admittedly, I don't get a chance to see all the stuff in all the places.

@@WineOnTheDime Okay, so I'm enrolled in the level 2 online, which is going well. I actually went ahead and ordered the Level 3 textbook from WSET in order to start studying for the exam, not knowing when I'll get to take it. FYI, which I discovered through a helpful subreddit, all of the specs are freely available on the WSET website in PDF format - www.wsetglobal.com/qualifications/wset-level-3-award-in-wines
      very bottom of the page.
I was using the Level 2 specs to study before the course materials arrived and found that the note cards I made based on the specs very accurate to the book materials and the practice exams. Hope this helps someone else. Are you going to go for Level 4?

@@montereymamacita I will probably go for the Diploma, but it's dependent on two factors:
      1. I actually get a job in the wine industry.
      2. My wife gets her advanced degree next. She's been wanting to go for her Masters and was patient enough for me to do an MBA, WSET 2 and 3. I think she's earned it. That and she said she would divorce me if I did it. Doing the math, it's less expensive to wait.

@@WineOnTheDime glad to see you're getting some mileage out of that MBA.

Did you find other practice exams other than the one in the study guide?

    • @WineOnTheDime

I did. Search for "wset 3 practice exam". James Cluer, MW, had one out there with over 200 questions.

This is a GREAT question. WSET Global has specs for each of their courses that give a detailed description on what will be covered on the exam by subject. For the level 2, there are 50 questions and it breaks down like this:
      1. Understand the environmental influences and grape-growing options in the vineyard and how these will impact the style and quality of wine. = 5 questions (10%)
      2. Understand how winemaking and bottle ageing influence the style and quality of wine. = 4 questions (8%)
      3. Understand how environmental influences, grape-growing options, winemaking and bottle ageing influence the style and quality of wines made from the principal grape varieties. = 19 questions (38%)
      4. Know the style and quality of wines produced from regionally important black and white grape varieties. = 12 questions (24%)
      5. Understand how the production process can influence the styles of sparkling and fortified wines. = 6 questions (12%)
      6. Understand the key principles and processes involved in the storage and service of wine, and in the pairing of food and wine. = 4 questions (8%)
I would start by budgeting your time based upon the learning outcomes. Don't spend much time at all with the social responsibilty chapter. There will only be 1 question on it. I would say that if you can fulfill the objectives in the spec, then you'll be good. Here is a link to the spec in-case they didn't include it in your study materials. www.wsetglobal.com/media/6942/wset_l2wines_specification_en_may2019.pdf
