Thanks Simon for ruining my dreams of stuffing my own child into an experimental aircraft and dropping him from a high altitude bomber. "Difficulty reattaching." Such a cop out.

The second XF 85 and the one that made most of the flights and had the crash is on display at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace museum in Ashland Nebraska. Used to be an educator there and while I didn't get a chance to get inside the goblin, we used to explore the B36 it sits under (though never did get to go down the tunnel in the 36). Would love to see an episode on the B47 stratojet bomber!.

I absolutely love the ugly little goblin.
I have here a completely useless what-if scenario but it's just fun to imagine.
Imagine a navy version of the XF-85.
    *20% longer.
*replace Westinghouse J34-WE-22 (3,000lb thrust) with J34-WE-17 which has an afterburner giving 3,350lb thrust without afterburning and 4,850lb thrust with afterburning.
*Increase fuel stores from 110 gallons to 250 gallons.
    *Very short, compact landing gear.
*Aerial refueling boom in nose that can double as a tow-cable.
*equipped with two 20mm cannon instead of 4 MGs.
*Able to carry two Sidewinder missiles either on wingtips or on top of each wing.
*Able to carry two 500# bombs or two 70 gallon drop tanks.
    *Empty weight 4,800-5,200#.
    *Max takeoff weight 6,500-7,500#.
Max speed would probably be the same 650mph without afterburning and 750-780mph with afterburning.
Endurance would be ~ 2 hours, giving an operation radius of 600 miles.
Since the wings fold up and it's so small a carrier could carry a whole bunch of them.
Since the refueling boom is also able to tow the craft, longer range missions could utilize "air ferrys". With a refueling plane towing four or five fighters close to the edge of the combat zone before releasing them to complete their mission then collecting them afterwards and towing them back close to the carrier or airstrip for them to land. If there was more then five planes in the mission they could rotate turns on the tow-line. The rest flying behind in formation waiting their turn to refuel and rest while being towed.
Just a silly mind game but fun to consider.

It's news to many Americans that the first all-metal, modern monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear, well ahead of Western designs. The brief flourishing of Soviet aviation in the late 1920's and early 1930's didn't last, but they did do many notable things. American fighters didn't match their European counterparts at the start of WW2, though the US had the advantage of remaining remote and out of the war for over 2 years.

I know you don't care for pronunciation corrections, but I gotta say it: the U.S.S. Macon is named for Macon, Georgia. Local pronunciation only emphasizes the first syllable in Macon, with a hard 'a' and a soft(?) 'o'. Since southern accents feature "G-dropping" (sitting >> sittin'), "Macon" sounds like "making" with a dropped G: makin'.
This has been used for silly wordplay since the dawn of time: Macon Whoopie is the city's defunct ice hockey team, Macon Money was a lottery-like program, Macon Bacon is the current baseball team, and Macon Progress is a variety from the Macon Beer Company.

ASIDE: One of my engineering professors at Ohio State in the early '90s had worked on the B-36 when he had worked in industry in the '50s, and he did not have kind things to say about it. In particular, he said that the monstrous 28-cylinder piston engines used in the B-36 were basically impossible to keep cool without having the cowling around it producing inordinate amounts of drag.

  • @shamrock5725

Did a quick search & couldn't find a video on it, but the "SkyHook Program" would be really cool to see! I want to say it was called the Fulton Skyhook, for aerial extraction of say a downed pilot. Like Batman's use of it when taking Lau out of his high-rise tower in Hong Kong, was obviously very cinematic and all for the movies.

Simon, while you had some experience in the Cadets while in school, you clear lack an understanding of how Fighter escort worked. Listen to your opening commentary about “…scrambling fighters to met enemy interceptors…”, it was 100% wrong.

Simon, you need to get a new channel where you sit at a bar and just talk about what you had for breakfast and sprinkle in some sports news or your last car trip or why dishwashers only go under the counter top. I mean, just anything. I'll watch that.
But whatever you do please don't get some butt implants or release a sex tape. That's for reality TV people with nothing interesting to say.
