I can’t believe I stumbled across this video. 50 yrs ago my mother me made sweatshirts with knitted or crocheted yokes just like this. I can’t wait to try this! The memories of those garments are rushing back. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU!
Well I wish the final version with you wearing it wasn’t all covered up with links to 4 other videos. I’ll try to find it on your website. Thank you for the information. I’m looking to embellish some tank tops with crochet. I must have missed you telling what size yarn to use.
I learned how to crochet when I was just a kid and I remember crocheting the edges of baby cloth diapers. They'd turn out so cute. Thank you for reminding me about that beautiful part of my childhood.
That is fabulous! Plus you gave me an additional idea! Many of today’s tops are cut far to low for me & I usually put an insert in. I can take those tops & just crochet them together at the split or add to the neckline to make them more modest. New subscriber as of now!! Thank you 😊
Hi from down under. I can't believe I fell on your tutorial. I've just purchased a few plain t shirts from Kmart for around the house. I wreck my shirts every year. I'm 69yo and just taught myself to crochet. Half way through my first granny blanket. I can't wait to jazz up my new shirts for summer. I may even shorten the sleeves, but some singlets and do the same. I love all of your work. Thank you!
You are an answer to my unspoken prayer. I haven’t crocheted in decades due to debilitating health issues. I wasn’t sure my mind could grasp how to do it any more. Your instructions are so detailed and clear, thank you! I’m looking forward to getting the materials to do this project. P.S. I’m sorry that there are people who are posting critical comments. It doesn’t matter if you say blanket stitch. What matters is that you are sharing your art with joy!
Wow! I spent my entire teenage years cutting T-shirts and never realized I could’ve made something so beautiful. You certainly take the terror out of crochet! This is simply stunning and I cannot imagine the endless amounts of possibilities. Thank you so much for sharing
Mind, BLOWN! I have been crocheting for years, and never once thought of doing this. I have many shirts that I have to wear a tank under to prevent exposing too much of me. I am going to do the blanket stitch right on the existing shirt (I don't want to get rid of any of the material) and crochet them closer to my actual neck. THANK YOUUUUUUUU!
I have been doing this with baby tee shirts for a few years now and it transforms an old plain onesie into a darling little shirt for baby girls. I did this on the top of a dress I have that was starting to get a bit worn. It covered up the problem and made for a beautiful neck edge! Thank you for the video. It really is a lovely way to transform an ordinary plain piece of clothing into something truly personalized and beautiful.
You have solved a t-shirt dilemma that I have been faced with. I've lost 90+ pounds in the past year. I'm also living in a country that the people are short. I cannot buy off the rack anything. I have about a dozen or so t-shirts that are WAY too large for me. I think that I can make the shoulders narrower by crocheting the yoke and then just take in the side seams to the sleeves. I'm still working on the idea but you have really started me on the way! Thank you! Now if reducing the size of jeans were as easy!
Not knowing your age may I suggest cutting the outer seam (and how ever many in/cm you need to take in) of your jeans & tightly crocheting them back together. If you want to keep the belt loops remove them first, then reattach when you’re finished. Just an idea! This video is really inspirational. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Absolutely beautiful. I'm going to do this on my daughter's Star Wars t-shirts. She always hopes there are t-shirts for ladies but they're either for men or little girls. This will do the trick. Thank you. She'll be thrilled.
Somebody below in the comments said adding pearls or beading would be cute and I was thinking that would be beautiful especially right along the cut line.. just love this.
I love this and can't wait to try it! Here's a hint for threading the needle -- fold the end of the thread back on itself to create a small loop and thread the loop into the eye.
Use to crochet manyyyyyyy years ago, wanted to pick it back up now around the holidays looking for something to give to friends when they come over for dinner as a gift, I love your videos, easy to follow then a book
To crochet and personalize my jeans would be nice. Have not tried to crochet in 40 years and loved emblishing a t-shirt. Thanks! Love to see more like this.
Finally got to this video on your YT channel. Been watching all of them and Love everything. I've already made one of your lacey shawls and can't wait to do this to an inexpensive T-shirt. It looks so much more expensive. Just lovely. Wanted to say what an amazing teacher you are and believe me because I have watched many other crochet channels. Thanks again for sharing your time and knowledge with all of us. You are a Gem. 💗
Just a suggestion... Next time try it on a colored tee shirt with either matching or better yet contrasting thread/yarn. The white shirt and the white thread/yarn and the white background gives no contrast. It blends together and can make it difficult to see when doing a close up. The camera has no idea what to focus on. But i love the end result!! Beautiful!!
Last summer. I bought a tank top like this. I've wanted to learn this technique forever. I don't understand all the crochet terminology, but follow by seeing very well. Thanks!
It really looks much more stylish with the crochet enhancement. I will definitely transform some of my T-shirts with this wonderful idea. Thanks for sharing!
In the UK this is known as the 'Blanket Stitch'. Used a lot many years ago like in the 1900s to finish off wool blankets. Can be used in embroidery or knitting/crocheting to make a nice edge.
It is also here in America, but if you noticed at the beginning of the video this was something she did live for the first time, so there was no pre-thought about the hem being rolled down or anything but the actual crocheting of the collar which I think looks fantastic!
I love this. You have turned a run of the mill dollar tee-shirt into a boutique piece that has no boundaries. You could add crocheted flowers and leaves on the top made w scraps of embroidery thread, or pretty buttons down the front, or applique or anything! Wow! I am so doing this. Love your video, subscribing!
Hi. I was skimming comments and wanted to tell you that I really ❤ your ideas for embellishment! Smart thinking! It's inspiring. Thanks for sharing your ideas! 🙂
I am now a faithful follower of your tutorials. I was looking to expand my collection of craftsmanship and you helped me succeed in that. Thanks. I love this.
You can work directly into the fabric with a hook but using a very small size 6 or 7 steel hook. I have done this many times. Just a suggestion for y'all.
What a wonderful tutorial! I loved how you explained it. I made a poncho and the neck was too loose so I used this to make it smaller and with the added picot stitch makes a nice touch. Now I’m m excited to try this on a t-shirt. Thank you.
Great idea! This would be great down the outside arm of long sleeve tees! A must before crochet is pre-washing the yarn 🧶 in hot water to shrink it if it has any plant fibers or wool in it. 😊
Stunning can’t wait to try this. I have only just discovered your channel but I’m wowed and think I will be looking through all your tutorials. FABULOUS.
Realizing I'm not a seamstress, I would think sewing a 1/4 inch seam along the new raw edge and THEN creating the crochet base in that hem (inserting needle into a 2-layer fabric now) would create a sturdier base. The may decrease the chances of the base stitches pulling on the raw fabric over time (wear, washing, etc). I was thinking, one may want to do a running stitch along the crochet base (at the bottom of the created vertical stitches) for a more finished look. Instead of: | | | .... you would now have: |_| |_| |_| .... Just an idea. Definitely have this project on my to-do list!
Terrie Sanders Maccalus Hi Terrie! If you hand wash and dry flat your item, the T-shirt's cut edge doesn't fray. It simply looks beautiful with a delicate, rolled edge. Good luck! :D ♡
Terrie Sanders Maccalus Hi, again! Let me clarify that T-shirt fraying interest a wee bit more. ;) We used to cut the hems off the sleeves and the bottom of our daughters' T-shirts, way back in the late eighties and early nineties, and do lots of different DIY girly techniques in the Cali suburbs we lived in. You can absolutely cut a t-shirt in various different ways, pull and TUG on those frayed t-shirt edges, making them delicately roll, throwing them in the wash and hanging them on a hanger to dry. The T-shirt still did not fray! ;)
I've done crochet and knit on the top of sweatshirts, also. It really dresses them up, and makes a cheap sweat shirt look good enough to shop in, or even go to work in.
Loved this video and will definitely be doing it. Could you please consider doing a video on how to add crochet sleeves to a teeshirt. Like many older ladies I prefer to cover the tops of my arms. Thanks.
As Lucy Maud Montgomery once said, "this offers such scope for the imagination!" I have several ideas, just watching it. Like... have you ever considered adding a collar onto a tank top? I mean the kind with spaghetti straps. You wouldn't have to cut anything away and you could work right over the spaghetti strap... think about it. Other ideas I have is to use different colors for the collar on different colored shirts. OR, you could make this and then dye the whole thing...? Lots of possibilities! I like the tank top idea because, for me personally, I feel a little too old to wear tank tops. Yet they're great in the heat. I usually end up wearing them with a loose shirt over that... which isn't much cooler. This would solve that problem!
To make your blanket stitch even make two marks with a pen the length you want your st to be onto the finger you hold in the back of the work and you will see at a glance where to put your needle.
Good suggestion to sew around it first by hand. I was using an awl to punch holes. I also suggest to fold the top edge of the hem and get through double fabric to seal off the edge from fraying. This works very well. Thank you for the tutorial. I am praying for a young person to come into my life to help me with my teaching channel. G-d bless you!
Very cute idea. The crochet adds that extra "WOW" to the old T-shirt. Thank you for the idea and pattern. I'm only sorry it took me so long to find this video.
I need to come up with new adjectives. I've been binge watching your videos most of today. How many times can I say beautiful, Love that, So cute? LoL 😂😍 I'm going to say adorable this time. Even if I've used it before, it fits ☺️👍
@@KristinOmdahl thank you for replying but you don't have to reply to every one of my comments. You are very busy lady. I'm spending my day with you so just know I'm having a wonderful time and my creative juices are flowing ☺️👍
What a beautiful idea!!! I have seen the picture of you wearing this white top and always thought it was soooo pretty , without having any idea that it was a DIY!!! Thank you for this, can't wait to try it out!! Your yarns look delicious!! Bamboo is always a favorite of mine, and I have added your yarns to my wishlist this year!! xo
Thank you! Just the right video for a project I was working on. Not a t-shirt, but a remake of a top I had, that I didn't like the collar. Also made a belt to match. I have this video saved in my favorites and have watched it many times.
I would LOVE a tutorial for embellishing the bottoms of jeans! I am too tall in the legs for most bargain jeans and want to crochet something pretty such as a flared end to make them longer. Tia!
Thank you for your great videos! What I would really like is if you would take this same shirt that you did the yoke on and crochet-on the bottom of the shirt. Shorter in the front and dipping down in the back. The style that you don’t tuck in. Really love all your helpful videos. You are the reason I’m getting back into crochet!
Just an FYI: When you sew the first round of loops around the top, a 'foundation round', the stitch you are making when you pull the yarn through the loop is called a "blanket stitch". It is usually done with sewing needle but can also be crocheted. It is common to use this stitch all around the edge of fleece fabric, usually for 'blankets'. Very nice video BTW!
Hello, Kristin, I loved your tee shirt. I did one in purple as a gift for a co-worker, and it came out great. I purchased additional material from Walmart to do some more in different colors. Again thank you so very much.
Thank you so much for your video. This is so beautiful. I love it, I can do this. I did not know this was so easy to do. All I have ever done is crocheted baby blankets for my grand babies & afghans. I can’t wait to do this to some of my t-shirts. So excited, Thank you again
I am a product of the 50's. I grew up embellishing everything to make it unique. I have a mother who taught us to sew Barbi clothes and then taught us to make our own clothes. We crocheted on dresses, vests, etc. Even crocheted on the bottom edges of jeans and crocheted summer hats with wide brims. Stiffened them with sugar water.. Very stylish. Could you please show a video on how to crochet small clutch bags. That might be a fun project. Great video thanks.
Thank you for the cool tutorial. Your t-shirt is lively I would do the same thing to the hem line. I think that would make your t-shirt even more dressy looking
Thank you for this video! I want to crochet trim around sleeves of some of my tee shirts to make them a bit longer. I have recently lost a good amount of weight and my arms just don't look good in very short sleeves. I would think the concept would basically be the same although probably wouldn't need the decreases. I'm excited to try!
OMGoodness! This is so cute, and looks like even I can do it! Going on vacation to the beach in July - I'm going to make one for each day! Well, maybe not EVERY day, but I AM making some for me AND my daughter-in-law and granddaughter! Thank you so much. Can't wait to get these done and try something else!!
I love this tutorial. Have been studying it over and over again while staring at my pink shirt. Finally got the nerve to cut the shirt yesterday and got as far as the first row of crochet. You're right, it's cute in every stage! :) I love all things girly, and this project is so very feminine. I can only hope my shirt turns out to be as cute as yours. I used about the same size hook as you did, but I'm curious to know, if I'm using size 10 thread, what size hook would be appropriate? Many thanks for all your videos. :)
You are fantastic at teaching where everyone can understand!! Thank you so much!! I'd tried to do this on my own but it never turned out right. I'm going to do it your way now!! Newbie to your channel and im so glad I found you!!!
Thank you so much! Fun to make perfect video. I also enjoyed making your Key West Shawl in which I added picots to last row. I just love your creations. I will have many more pretty things to wear because of you. You rock! 🤗
I liked your video, but I really loved the fact that you didn't edit out you mistakes. We are only human. The t-shirt turned out nice. Will have to try this someday soon. What better way to jazz up a $4.00 t-shirt.
There are little crochet hooks with a pointed end available in the fiber craft section. I think I found them in Hobby Lobby. That might help with projects like this. I would probably do a chalk line before direct cutting, too. I might run some fabric fixer to strengthen the raw edge of the fabric and keep it from raveling, too. It did turn out lovely, particularly for a pretty loose project.
Kristin, Loved your idea, everyone's comments and the video! I am learning how to crochet with your videos. Thank you! Please keep them coming and add some with beads
One of the first upcycled items that I’d worked on were my daughter’s jeans. I’d cut the outer seam of her jeans from the bottom hem to just below her knee. From there, I’d crocheted an intricate design that she’d liked in a triangle pattern and sewn it into that space. Instant bell bottoms with a bad @$$ twist. They looked amazing. Fixing up a Tee in the same colors like this would be perfect. Thank you for the ideas.
Kristin, what a great idea! you gave me so many ideas that Im going to try, including my completely black, boring dress. thank you for sharing and ... not too shabby for going live :))
Found you while browsing and I’m so glad I did. I am going to buy a T-shirt in the morning so I can try this, it looks lovely and your demo makes it look easy. Thank you for the inspiration, I’m off to see what else you have created but first I’ll subscribe to your channel.
Thank you for sharing this video on redoing a simple T-shirt DYI into a real cool fashion statement top. Fabulous. I've been wanting to do this, now I have a fun fast easy video that takes me from beginning to end. Luv It.
I enjoyed the crochet T shirt tutorial. Thank you. I just subscribed to your channel and I am looking forward to be inspired by your lovely work. I just started crocheting a few months ago and can’t seem to put the hook down.
Fabulous idea thank you ! I will be trying this ! I wonder if it could be done on a store bought knitted jumper ?Your advice would be very welcome ! Stay safe in these unprecedented times !best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺!🙏
Love it!! Used to embellish tshirts with beads but this is a great idea! you could do the bottom as well or a tunic made from a tanktop, the list goes on :-)
I can’t believe I stumbled across this video. 50 yrs ago my mother me made sweatshirts with knitted or crocheted yokes just like this. I can’t wait to try this! The memories of those garments are rushing back. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU!
You're welcome!
Wonderful! Happy New Year!

Thank you for this awesome tutorial! I hate that choking feeling of crew-neck t-shirts and this is a beautiful way to make them comfortable to wear.
Thank you!
Wow! I spent my entire teenage years cutting T-shirts and never realized I could’ve made something so beautiful. You certainly take the terror out of crochet! This is simply stunning and I cannot imagine the endless amounts of possibilities. Thank you so much for sharing
Pearls as an embellishment would be gorgeous on this!
Thanks for sharing! I'm so glad you are happy :)
What a wonderful way to dress up a plain t shirt! The possibilities are endless.
can't believe I'm seeing this great video 3 years later!! Love this, with be putting it on my TO DO PROJECT LIST. Thanks Kristen!!
Seeing it for the first time 5 years later.
Theresia Smolevitz can u share one of ur pic with me...baby t shirt crochet
With a grandbaby girl coming in May I was just wondering if I could do this on a couple of little t-shirts but onesies what a great idea!!!
You crochet like I do, right off your finger. That's how I learned how to crochet. Glad to know I'm not the only one. Cute top.
Thank you! Hope it helps you to learn this fun project!
Congratulations! You can alter clothing in many, many ways with crochet. I will be making more videos, too :)
Janice MacEachern that is Awesome with your weight loss, congratulations.
Not knowing your age may I suggest cutting the outer seam (and how ever many in/cm you need to take in) of your jeans & tightly crocheting them back together. In South Africa we also call it a blanket stitch, but we work from right to left, not left to right.

What a wonderful tutorial! I loved how you explained it.
I made a poncho and the neck was too loose so I used this to make it smaller and with the added picot stitch makes a nice touch.
Now I’m m excited to try this on a t-shirt.
Thank you.
Great project! Not difficult or time consuming and yielding a beautiful, wearable garment that looks great on you!

Great idea! This would be great down the outside arm of long sleeve tees! A must before crochet is pre-washing the yarn 🧶 in hot water to shrink it if it has any plant fibers or wool in it. 😊
Just wash your shirt in cold water.....so much less wear and fading. Dry flat, or hanging over back of chair..using towel as buffer layer.

Thank you for this, can't wait to try it out!! Your yarns look delicious!! Bamboo is always a favorite of mine, and I have added your yarns to my wishlist this year!! xo
Wonderful! Let me know when you make it! xoxo, Kristin
Thank you! Just the right video for a project I was working on. Not a t-shirt, but a remake of a top I had, that I didn't like the collar. Also made a belt to match. I have this video saved in my favorites and have watched it many times.
FABULOUS ! Can't wait to try it on a tshirt I am supposed to throw away but couldn't . New life for this tshirt :)
Yaaaaaaaaas please do more of these attachment videos pleeeeeeease!!!! Absolutely love this!!!
I would LOVE a tutorial for embellishing the bottoms of jeans! I am too tall in the legs for most bargain jeans and want to crochet something pretty such as a flared end to make them longer. Tia!
So glad I stumbled upon your channel always loved crochet T-shirt’s but used bought lace NOW I can do it myself thanks so very much 🤗
Thank you for your great videos! What I would really like is if you would take this same shirt that you did the yoke on and crochet-on the bottom of the shirt. Shorter in the front and dipping down in the back. The style that you don’t tuck in. Really love all your helpful videos. You are the reason I’m getting back into crochet!
Great idea! I will add it to my list :) Thank you for your feedback.
That's a beautiful shirt. I can do a standard crochet stitch but I don't have the patience it takes to do such intricate work lol
Very beautiful !!!!! Thank you so much
You’re welcome!
Thanks for sharing!
Hello, Kristin, I loved your tee shirt. I did one in purple as a gift for a co-worker, and it came out great. I purchased additional material from Walmart to do some more in different colors. Again thank you so very much.
I am delighted to know you enjoyed this :)
xoxo,
Kristin
Thank you so much for your video. This is so beautiful. I love it, I can do this. I did not know this was so easy to do. All I have ever done is crocheted baby blankets for my grand babies & afghans. I can’t wait to do this to some of my t-shirts. So excited, Thank you again
You're welcome! Enjoy :)
This is so beautiful and looks easy enough that I think even I could do it!
Wonderful!
Trish Bresolin lovely and does look classy as well as easy,,turnsa planinjust as ordinary and possibly cheap t,,,-shirt into. A designer garment.
Thank you for this amazing tutorial! your Tee came out so beautiful, just like something from a really expensive designer shop!
This is AWESOME. So many possibilities! And I can finally add some elegance to my plain T-shirts. Love this video!!! XD
Yay! Thank you!
Ok...off to buy a tee shirt tomorrow! Love this!!
Thank you for leaving your mistakes in the video to help with my learning how to crochet on fabric. You are sho awesome!! 🦄🌈
Thank you for the cool tutorial. Your t-shirt is lively
I would do the same thing to the hem line. I think that would make your t-shirt even more dressy looking
This video was just wonderful! Thank you so much, I can’t wait to make this for a friend’s mother for her birthday!
You are so welcome! You are correct, you won't need decreases to elongate the sleeves. Let me know how it turns out! xoxo, Kristin
Keep me posted!
You rock! 🤗
Thank you for watching the video! I'm glad you like my knit and crochet patterns. If I can help you with anything, please let me know :)
It did turn out lovely, particularly for a pretty loose project.
artistpw These are all great ideas!
Kristin,
Loved your idea, everyone's comments and the video! I am learning how to crochet with your videos.
Thank you! Please keep them coming and add some with beads
I love this transformation ...you made with the t shirt..i gone do this tomorow with one of my t shirt to...thank you for the idea
Thank you very much for this wandeful idea. I am at my 4th t-shirt transformation, love it
One of the first upcycled items that I’d worked on were my daughter’s jeans.
Great! Thanks for sharing.
Kristin, what a great idea! you gave me so many ideas that Im going to try, including my completely black, boring dress. thank you for sharing and ... not too shabby for going live :))
Thank you!
You’re so skilled and talented!!! Thanks for sharing 🌷

Found you while browsing and I’m so glad I did. I am going to buy a T-shirt in the morning so I can try this, it looks lovely and your demo makes it look easy. Thank you for the inspiration, I’m off to see what else you have created but first I’ll subscribe to your channel.
finally someone who holds their hook a yarn like myself lol thanks for the tutorial needing to replace the worn lace on one of my favorite tops.
It is beautiful! I can see some pretty pearl beads being added too.
Great idea!
I love stuff like this! Please make more videos like this especially with T-shirts! You are so creative! Thank you!
You have given me an idea how to use the lace on T-shirt or tank top
I make a lot of doilies with thread. I love this idea and it seems easy enough. Thank you

I enjoyed the crochet T shirt tutorial. Thank you. I just subscribed to your channel and I am looking forward to be inspired by your lovely work. I just started crocheting a few months ago and can’t seem to put the hook down.

Used to embellish tshirts with beads but this is a great idea!
you could do the bottom as well or a tunic made from a tanktop, the list goes on :-)
