Thanks for the love Woody! Glad you enjoyed the livestream
Excellent product demonstration you gave, Matt! I really enjoyed the whole presentation!
@@mrclaytron Thanks! Appreciate the nice words 🙂
you presentation was really excellent, but Arturia should work on that type of electric piano model, that sounded like a Wurlitzer, but very unnatural in the higher octaves (this is a common problem with Wurli emulations, only a few got it right).
@@microbug3487 Noted 🙂 Will pass that on!
Hi Matt, honored that you stopped by, congrats on an outstanding presentation. i particularly enjoyed your rendition of Moanin' Best of luck with the launch and product evolution!
Exciting, I look forward to hearing and seeing your demo of the Astrolab
Love Woody 's excitement and I am excited with him, though I am hearing this for the first time.
Hope you get to demo it for us, Woody.
And also personally going to check it out.
nice, thanks!
The presentation was well done, indeed, but I am afraid no one told Arturia that Akai has already done that with the MPC Key 61. It may have fewer plugins, but you can use 8 of them simultaneously (plus effects), and fully edit these on the hardware too - and all can be prepared in software. Big screen, good keybed, additional outputs (epandable via classcompliant interfaces) and an internal power supply (and a full blown sequencer) as a bonus, and it is lighter and cheaper. Loading times can be avoided by using key ranges, btw. Electric Pianos sound better on MPC when using Stage EP plugin, much to "synthetic" on Arturia as heard in the well played demonstration.
I'm genuinely surprised they didn't send one to you, one of the few "SynthTubers" with a big fanbase that can actually play the piano.
lol, well yes, i am a bit disappointed there was a party and i was not invited :(
Did the little round LED screen do a tilt-to-click select thing?
Yah, please demo. I'd like to see what you can get out of it. I tend to buy stuff and it just sits so I'd enjoy following your lead
The challenge is interface control. It looks like you can drive it with the keylab and minlab (from the site). They are supposed to be at the pedal show here in Portland Saturday so I got a reason to have to go :-)
I wonder how this will compare to classic stage keyboards like nord electro, Yamaha yc, or even ck61
well, not great for organ players, lacking all the controls, but for other sounds, it's not bad.
just watched the doctor mix unboxing and demo. this looks a phenomenal bit of kit with quite a lot of versatility. only thing that would need a redo is the oled screen
yeah, they will surely address that in V2
@@WoodyPianoShack What like, a bigger round knob? This thing is absolute BS. Any other controller and the complete softsynths on any lapdog are better tweakable and cheaper.
The screen in questionable. Quite small and oddly shaped.
Would love to see you demo this one Woody.
The sounds are fabulous.
I guess that's what they did with all the Nest screens
i read in the comments that nest screens are bigger!
What is a Nest synth?
@@oupahens9219 This is a Nest Synth. Google Nest thermostats have a round screen and you navigate by turning it
@@oupahens9219It’s not a synth. It’s an electronic thermostat that you hook to your AC system and then it can also be controlled from your phone. It has the same round format and works the same way as the rotary screen you see in the Astrolab, but it’s apparently bigger.
@@maudias Aha, thanks, so what is that doing there instead of a readable screen.
Measuring your temperature and adjusting the tuning? No, that was done before in "Autotune" with these old analogs.
I think this is misfiring on all cylinders.
I’ve got those Focal monitors so I need this synth too
I’d be a player for $1195
Looks good. It seems it's going to compete with the other 61-key stage keyboard offerings, namely: the Nord Electro 6D 61, Yamaha YC61, and possibly even the Hammond SK Pro. Nice too see that people want to play keyboards on stage again, as opposed to just twiddling knobs on some miniature synthesizers.
Very nice! I have the Arturia V collection, that I use in conjunction with a Komplete Kontrol S61 MKII and Komplete Kontrol software. I'm pretty sure I get access to Augmented Keys and a bunch of others with my Komplete Kontrol package, that I get access with the purchase of the keyboard. I am fairly aquinted with the KK S61s interface, although, I haven't mastered all of it's knobs and buttons and I'm also just scratching the surface of all the VSTs, I have access to... I like the idea of this Arturia keyboard, although, I will stick with my current set up because, well, money and I don't need a 1700 keyboard. Super cool device, still.
i have a copy of analog lab that i think i paid about 50 bucks for on sale, that paired with any one of my controllers will get me all the same sounds, and more. i think AL is even NKS compatible and will integrate real nice in the NI controllers.
Erm... Woody - it says "Multis/Keyboard Split" on the screen there and you scrolled right past it! 🙂- I've scan-read the manual for you, and it states that each preset contains two instruments which can be layered and set to a different MIDI input each. The manual also goes on to say: "Note that even in a Single Preset, some AstroLab instruments have multi-timbral capabilities in
their own right" - So, whilst one doesn't have complete freedom in terms of multi-tibrality, the degree of configuration is such that it may be able to serve in a number of multi-timbral scenarios. Hope that helps, Rgds, J.
2 sounds either layered or split.
That's some weak sauce.
Well I don't think I will be buying this, but I do think it looks great. I did however recently purchase a KeyLab Essential MK3, and I like it a lot.
I'd buy it if is not only came with a manual... but the talent to play it like this (or Woody) too. Oh well.... !
haha, well that is a good requirements for all synths & keyboards!
Nice looking „bad gear“. ❤
Very interesting board, but so was the Akai keyboard MPC and it was far from the Kronos killer people wanted, Will be interesting if people buy into the idea of making your sounds in the studio with V-Collection and using this for gigging
i see so many used MPC ONEs for sale, so something did not quite hit the mark. but everyone will agree the Arturia synths are the killer feature here, whilst nobody cares about the Akai plugs.
@@WoodyPianoShack Yeah just another proprietary format that noone else can use .. people want vst plugins today
The Key 61 was my first Akai MPC, and I'm quite happy with it. IMO the recent plugins are very good. Jura - the most recent plugin - is great. And IIRC the recent Akai plugins also come with VST.
Having said that... I totally get that the Arturia plugins deserve their top-shelf reputation. And the perception that you're not buying into/ limiting yourself to only the Arturia standalone device matters a lot.
Cool i have a screen and mac mini with a mounted screen between two endcheeks on/above my NI controller. Screen is bigger and i can use more softsynths.
Its hard to justify this or be hyped about it. Nice idea. Cute.
Woody my brain hurts and my bank account is showing signs of trauma. The synth industry does it again, just when I had decided to purchase the Modal Electronics Carbon 8 ( when it becomes available ),I am introduced to yet another fantastic synth from Arthurian. 😳. Thanks for your enthusiasm, kind regards Mick.
I also wanted to see a black version....
They should include the VST versions of Analog Lab and V Collection with the purchase imo considering the limitations of editing on the board directly.
imho, if you are going to take the trouble of connecting this to PC and loading v collection to tweak stuff, then at this stage you might as well just use software + controller and save yourself $1000
@@WoodyPianoShack I don't necessarily disagree, if you're strictly a studio musician. But, if you use in studio and gig, then I could see the poster's point. Another scenario, is the Astrolab for gigs and maybe you do have a MIDI controller/DAW setup at home. Would be cool if they included the software suite as a complementary gift.
@@agentooe33AD Exactly, and you may simply want to import your own sounds to play on stage with little hassle. According to loopop "I think I read somewhere in the documentation that it can hold up to 1,000,000 presets, but if you use ones with samples then less". You can make use of that. It wouldn't cost Arturia anything extra and it would add more value to what is essentially a preset machine. Maybe they figure, rightly, that they can get some extra sales from people who do want to edit presets and or program their own sounds to import into their AL keyboard.
Also, to correct myself. It looks like you do get Analog Lab Pro with the board.
@jimdavis9619 astrolab is an actual hardware synth tho ;)
Guys, this DESPERATELY needs a 76-key version. (And the ability to add your own VSTs Pianoteq, Lounge Lizard., VB-3 etc. But I don't expect that to happen any time soon. THAT was the Muse Receptor which had no keyboard nor display.....) But 76 and 88 versions, please.
if arturia collaborated with other vendors then we might see their stuff onboard, but NI feels more likely to do that first.. think of the hassles with authorization and updates.
That piano was really nice. The Rhodes too. MS bass sound is nice and fat. So many sound producing engines. As a producer I'm always on the lookout for great sounds and programming.
bi timbral actually - split/layer
yeah thanks, figured that out later in the video.
I think you liked it then!
i did initially, got caught up in the launch hype, but having second thoughts, should make an update video...
WesAudio and Arturia agree; underscore is the new nil! 😂
But seriously, nice work, Arturia! Especially at this price-point!
So if I get a 66 keys midi keyboard, connect it to a raspberry pi 5 with a small touch screen with the v collection, I would basically have the same thing. Perhaps my solution would be way cheaper though.
it would be yes!
My guess would be it would NOT be the same. The issue is the plugs aren't written to run specifically on the Pi chipset. You may be able to squeeze some sounds out of it but it won't be able to keep up with something written exclusively for the chipset from Arturia.
It's pretty amazing Woody, sound wise. There are two methods for live board sound accessibility. These have evolved and are proven. One is the Nord method. All controls in view and outwardly mechanical. The other is a large touch screen with shallow menuing. I really don't believe there is any excuse for a new board, marketing itself as "stage", to fail to use one of these methodologies. The MODX+ is $1600.00. It is not a stage board per-se but it looks to accomodate the stage paradigm better than the new Arturia. Having said that, I'll bet the sounds are amazing. I've got 3 Arturia keyboards and almost all of their sounds -far more than 1300, and they are, for the most part, beautiful (As long as you don't try them through PA speakers.) Not even good ones reproduce all that well.
yeah, the selection of v collection presets is the only killer feature here. i'm actually happy with arturia's philosophy for sound editing onboard.
I was so looking forward to this keyboard, but ultimately its not for me and my needs. I play prog music and I need my setlist, seamless transitions and a lot of layers and samples. This is something we've all wanted though, vsts in a hardware package! I just wish it had 9sliders and a bigger screen to tweak parameters, the idea of connecting your phone is great but it doesn't seem like you can tweak.
that is a pretty good sum up, yes!
Its not for me, but I love the design, with the wooden legs also
Aah it’s close, but for me a true controller for V Collection and the rest of the Arturia suite needs a boatload more controls pre-mapped to the most commonly-edited parameters of the soft synths, not just four macro knobs. I also feel that not including the new Fatar poly aftertouch keyboard in this is a big miss, when Native Instruments’ Komplete Kontrol now offers it.
i tend to agree with you, unless for some reason you really don't want to be tethered to PC and screen. i think i will make a follow up video as I am having some second thoughts after hype has died down.
@@WoodyPianoShackI have to say that I was disappointed when the S3 Komplete Kontrol boards were announced too - they have wonderful keybeds and their approach to actually editing sounds right on the hardware is an improvement over the previous generation, but how hard would it have been to have dedicated filter cutoff and resonance knobs, and maybe a set for ADSR with a button or two to switch between VCA, VCF etc, rather like the Fantom has, for real hands-on editing? Nobody has got this hardware-control-for-software thing done right yet, so it’s disappointing to see that this new Arturia product fails in all the same ways.
I have the V Collection 9 and Pigments, so this is kind of exciting. I want this for the synths alone. Their modeled A & E pianos, though pretty lush, are still a little... artificial sounding. But usable. Their organ is excellent, but the Leslie hasn't arrived. If it's priced properly, I'll be selling my NP5 & Alesis Ion. The only thing that would prevent this purchase, is if Cherry Audio releases a hardware piece... 🤤
i have to wonder, if one already owns analog lab or v collection, and don't mind being tethered to PC & screen, then that seems a cheaper, more convenient and better option? it's an interesting and desirable device, but I am starting to ask myself what is the point?
@@WoodyPianoShack I've done the laptop module thing & , for a scatter brain like me, it gets time consuming. So, setup time is and stability are definite draws for me, otherwise we'd have the usual connections (i e, audio, power, pedal) & power cycles, plus, connecting laptop power, midi, Audio interface USB. And, as you know, anything in between can fail 🤣 randomly.. This, in theory, is an answer to prayer.
It's certainly a looker. A lot of great sounds too. I admit to being somewhat impressed. And competitively priced to boot!
Now, can anybody lend me about £1900?
i could sell half the synths i just bought... and get this with 34 of them ;)
@@WoodyPianoShack You just said it yourself you get limited use. You couldn’t replace one real synth with this. It is a preset machine just like you stated. It is a 2000 dollar controller that handicaps your vst.
Why are you so excited about this.
I take it Woody wouldn't mind Arturia leaving an Astrolab for him to play with 🤣
sadly i doubt that will happen as it seems the demo units have already gone out! guess I'll fire up analog lab and enjoy that instead to help me get over it. ;)
@@WoodyPianoShack priorities ... I baught the Korg pack in December. Hope on mayba a superdeal next from Arturia 😝Right now I have my Eyes on Sample Robot so I can sample some of my Kronos favorites for the Genos 2 🙂
@@WoodyPianoShack I noticed that Claudio has had some fun with it :-)
Trust me, UVI will come up with one like this but with synth anthology and vintage vault built in, that will blow this out of the water especially if it also had falcon built in
but uvi do not make hardware. the only software vendors that make hardware are NI and Arturia. although most digital synths these days are basically vsts running in a box, zenology, even the new montage.
2 synths at a time, it’s multitembral in this way
would have loved 4 parts like Nord Lead, but so much better than 1 :)
Only two-part multitimbral and no ability to act as an external master controller. Feels like a v2 could have more physical controls (drawbars), allow for more internal sounds, and add the ability to control external gear in more complex splits and layers. That would really put this in more of a Kronos competitor category.
Ya, just doubling it to 4 instances and more live controls would greatly enhance its use, but I suspect they just like Korg used a pi compute board which is fine for a single synth engine or 2 dependent on the poliphony but a Pi 4 or 5 is almost as powerfull if not more than the 2010 Intel Atom used in the Kronos and Kronos 2
yeah, this might be a case of "wait for v2", but a very bold step, i wonder why it took so long...
So an old Roland D990 or SuperNova could beat this new instument with 16 and 8 multitimbral CH. In this case no chance to use DAW-les which is so sad.
Nice keyboard, but I have to say, I don't know who it's for. Maybe it's a modern version of a family home keyboard.
Gigging or aspiring musicians have keyboards that cover the two main roles of chords/accompaniment and solo/melody, from manufacturers such as Nord, Sequential, Yamaha, Roland, ... .
In the studio there is normally a large main control keyboard and several other keyboards. Everything is connected to a PC on which there are several SW synthesizers/keyboards, e.g. Arturia V-Collection or other collections of vintage sounds, Pigments, Spectrasonic Omnisphere ... . No keyboard is required that hosts SW synthesizers directly, stand alone.
Gosh, they’re really full of themselves, aren’t they, with this pseudo Apple keynote speech unveiling? A 2k synth with no internal patch editing a crummy keybed and no poly aftertouch. None of Arturia’s electro-mechanical emulations are competitive except the transistor organs. What would really break the internet is if Spectrasonics built a keyboard with THEIR plugins onboard.🤩
it would indeed, great comment, thanks!
At about € 1600 it is right between Roland Fantom 06 and Korg Nautilus...
yeah, but those two are workstations with 16 tracks, every kind of sound imagineable, deep sound design, drums, sequencers etc etc. not a good comparison.
@@WoodyPianoShack It's propably for different people like thos that already uses Arturia a lot in their studio, just like the Akai is made more for people working in beats than a regular Session gigging musicians
@@WoodyPianoShack But this one has virtual modeling, granular, wavetable, VST and FM engine. Maybe there is software editor to dive deeper into the sounds like most workstations have. If you have a PC there is no need for a workstation. I have a 16 part vintage multi timbral workstation and rarely use it, because there is also voice steel involved.
@@LuddyVonBeat you can edit the sounds in depth if you also purchase v collection. i would counter and say that if you have a pc and don't mind using it, there is no need for this. :) daw, multiple instances of analog lab and a nice controller will be superior.
@@WoodyPianoShack Well you have a good point. But that can be said for all digital synths and workstations. At the end end it will all come down to sound quality, personally I think I'd prefer this keyboard over an Yamaha Montage,Korg Kronos or Roland X because of it's different sound engines. Especialy the virtual modeling aspect.
Such a shame @ArturiaOfficial didn't sent you one 😏
yeah, that was a bummer
Someone at Arturia, how can we sell more plugins?
Someone else at Arturia, why don't we make a hardware keyboard that plays presets that can't be edited unless they buy the appropriate plugin.
Someone else at Arturia, sounds like a win win to me $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I think the market for this keyboard is quite limited and niche.
Selling my Roland gear to get the Astrolab.
No more deep menu dives and pay-to-play downloads for me.
Take note Roland…. Your days are numbered.
No touchscreen, mpe, wireless capability but AstroPriced at $1,999 in USA…no thanks.
astropriced, that's funny! :)
$1,599 in US. Yeah, still pricey.
Well… I have a Montage M8x, a Hydrasynth Deluxe, an Arturia midi controller for my DAW, and the Arturia V-collection on my PC.
This is an exciting announcement, but for me I think I’m already covered for all sounds.
yeah, you def are! it's feels refreshing not to have to boot up the PC, but if you don't mind that, then this has nothing to offer.
Wondering where all the midi thermostat jokes are
just scan through the comments on the launch videos... :)
Looks like mostly presets with minimal editing. Small display. Sorry doesn’t really excite me.
all that is true! don't mind the presets and minimal editing but there is wasted space there for a much nicer screen.
That B3 so-called "Leslie" was just about the worst thing I've ever heard in a keyboard.
weee oooo weee ooooo ( police sirens) keybed police here . license and registration ...., i sense a shortly hinged keybed on a dope synth . arturia !!! dont do it !!!! weeeee ooooo weeeee oooooo weeeee oooooo ( sireren sounds fade off into the distance and i go play old keyboards of olde)
check my latest community post for a discussion about the keys... they are guilty officer!
@@WoodyPianoShack a crying shame !
It's a pc inside a keyboard playing tweaked vst plugins, not a new idea.
you are right, i already have a few synths that do that. will make a follow up video now that the launch hype is over.
Despite all the glowing reviews of Arturia keybeds, I am not a fan. I tried the new keylab essential on a store and wow the keybed feels bad and cheap.
Generally stage keyboards are not for sound design (more keys, less controls) but that display is just too ridiculous. Think of us grey haired guys.
And let’s hope no one in the audience is pairing his cellphone with the performaners keyboard.
Security often is an afterthought in companies that didn’t start in networking.
good call, totally agree! fan of quirky french design I am, but the display is so important, you can't screw around with it.
Why would you review a keyboard that you didn’t play?
this is obviously not a review. it's an opinion piece and reaction video.
Its just another rompler, nothing new, except the wood stuff on the sides and the Apple watch temperature thermostat presets selector. And you do not have any VST plugins with it , just presets from those VSTs like in the Analog Lab. If you want to have more presets or even be able to create your own ones, you will have to buy those VSTs,( Pigment+ Collection X.x ) big time 😂 .
it's a hard pass from me unfortunately,
Woody got a copyright takedown. Na na na na naaaaaa naaaa. Physical modeling sucks IMHO. Sucks.
lol! sampling is so 1995! Na na na na naaaaaa naaaa.
Dead on arrival. No polyphonic aftertouch. Screen much to small. Try to tweak Pigments on that screen. No chance.
I was about to say.. Arturia's pianos are not good, but heir modelled CS80's etc are just amazing. This keyboard is super interesting. I love the design. But it seems hamstrung by the lack of faders/knobs/buttons. What a silly screen, I'd almost rather be without it. Again - at it's core, super useful concept. Not sure they did it right.
no, on reflection i am not sure either, i think a followup vid is in order!
