I will watch and listen to the Professor for the rest of my life. I cannot thank him enough for launching me on my intellectual journey. Last I communicated to him, he was not well, and it is my hope that he is recovered. I really cannot explain how he has elevated my bronze soul. Thank you Professor.
I am sorry to report that Professor Michael Sugrue passed away this January. His death is a great loss for all of us who quest after understanding of Western culture and the human condition. Thank you Dr Sugrue for sharing your vast knowledge with us.
I can’t thank enough for posting these lectures. I have watched all of them on the greatest philosophers of all times. Thank you so much. Spasibo! Obrigada! ¡Gracias!

I was just researching Thucydides and who better than Micheal Sugre to give me a comprehensive lecture on his works. Sugre is the best teacher I never had; I’m genuinely envious of his students 😢
I've been writing a story for a few years now and philosophy is a key aspect, I began by reading works from Seneca, Epictetus, Aurelius, Epicurus, Aristotle, etc. I found your work on youtube and I have to say I couldn't ask for a better teacher, was never able to go to college but these lectures are a gold mine, Thankyou for this collection of work its invaluable.
I appreciate your lectures, I am making my effort of understanding the world and myself, and I aspire to be as well read as you in my endeavor. When you talk about books I have read, you speak of details I entirely overlook. It has shown me that I can be far more attentive when reading the literature of the great thinkers. Thank you for uploading them for the benefit of us all, I wish you well.
Thucydides was the greatest historian ever. He started seriously history. He could have made a good story about himself (like John Smith) or trashed his rivals. He did neither. That is why he is a great man. He showed it is possible to write good history.
Thanks Professor. I hope you live well! I recently discovered your videos and they are incredibly enriching. I hope to share a much of this knowledge you have so brilliantly condensed into your erudite videos with my friends and family, so these treasures live on. Thank you.
I keep looking for more of your stuff in Audible. It's a shame that The Great Courses have decided to replace your lectures with inferior content from other professors. You are the best.
Sugrue says that he is not good at math and yet he regularly employs mathematical terms to make his talk more precise. This is a good reason for social scientists to study higher-order math at least for the terms.
I read this book in a course on grand strategy several semesters ago, and my professor, Dr Paul Carrese, made the point that perhaps Thucydides was not just the cold realist modern IR professors make him out to be. As you pointed out, one of the key takeaways from his account of the War was that when all piety is wiped away by logos, logos also cannot stand on its own. A few other neat takeaways from that course: - The Athenians, the seafaring maritime empire, are ultimately defeated in Sicily in a ditch, slaughtered in the same water they believed they commanded. - Diodotus, who saved the subjugated people from genocide, has a curious name. The etymology is actually “Sent by Zeus” (or something similar - I’m a bit rusty).
There seem to be a lot of parallels between Thucydides and Nietzsche. Both were the messengers of the death of their respective religious myths, i.e., God or Gods and wrote about it extensively. Now I need to listen to both again. . .
@@dr.michaelsugrue Thanks Genevieve! Now, the next issue is that Thucydides was writing about the Peloponnesian wars, which basically decimated Athens. That civilization did not survive the loss of their Gods. So far, western civilization has survived Nietzsche's pronouncement. But it's only a little over 100 years since then, the blink of an eye in history. Are we at critical mass? Can we and should we preserve our civilization? I hope your father stays in the game. He is a magnificent voice. . .and you sound like a young, new voice that is desperately needed. Kudos. . . now back to the Professor's lectures! I still have much to learn.
@@gspurlock1118 Nietzsche never has anything negative to say about Thucydides - it comes close to hero worship, or as far as Nietzsche could travel along such a pedestrian path.

MIL. How is it possible that we have as much interest in becoming your slaves as you have in subjugating us? ATH. Because you, if you submit, will avoid the final destruction, and we will profit if we do not destroy you. MIL. So you would not accept us to be your friends instead of your enemies, to live in peace and remain neutral? Binge Watching Professor Sugrue's lecture is surely an epic Journey, if not a homeric one
This man is outstanding. I am watching him as an aid to reading, a very special intellect.
Another extraordinary lecture by a great Professor.
This is like hearty food, timely rain, and fortuitously uncovering hidden gold. Thanks very much.
I love you
Holy Toledo! This one was an eye-opener. Informative and enjoyable. (Historian, philosopher, military man--what a mind and personality.)

Every American needs to watch this lecture and read the book in question. Haunting lessons for our current times.
As Sparta and Athens were going to inevitably clash so will the US and China.
I would love to know what Michael Sugrue lectures are yet to be uploaded, I literally can’t get enough of these!
God bless you Dr.Sugrue may you live forever as a professor to us and our generations
Fyi, prof passed away this jan.
My greatest pleasure is to listen to one of Michael Segrue’s lectures. Fine grasp of his subject and ability to express his insights.

Thanks Michael! A really great & unique take on Thucydides - though everyone should read the whole book! (not just the funeral oration :) )
