I entered Waterloo this year and as you said, it is indeed a very lonely place. Before I went to campus, I had many ideas and things that wanted to try, thought that I would make many friends. But once the term started, I was literally overwhelmed, and all I did since then is just study, finish assignments, and study. Especially at this Covid period, I can clearly feel that people are more isolated from each other. Even I'm in an engineering cohort, I still feel that it's quite difficult to make friends, especially make actual friends, which is pretty sad. Who knows.
Congrats on almost finishing your first year! I'm sure you'll grow closer to your classmates in the next few semesters when you can see each other in person again. I heard the drop out rate for engineering is pretty high so the amount of schoolwork is probably expected unfortunately. Good luck Kevin!!
I agree with what you shared. I’m going to 3rd year this year, and I started going to counseling services on my first year because the struggles are real. Like even at social gatherings, people just talk about school non-stop,
100% agree with everything you've said with regards to social life at waterloo, its comforting to know that Im not the only one who went thru something like this
Thank you for the information! I’m currently deciding between Guelph and Waterloo for university. I’m more of an introvert myself so being alone doesn’t sound terrible, but that doesn’t mean being lonely is fun. The school does seem really competitive as well, which I’m not into at all. But I really like the idea of their honours science program so I’ll see how it goes!
So I graduated from CS over 15 years ago and it's interesting to compare our experiences because I think it was not as competitive to get into the school then - still hard but you didn't need 95% averages. While the course load was heavy, I found that hanging out around your friends or roommate's (helps if they are in your classes) really helps with the loneliness. I did the co-op program. I partied like crazy all co-ops terms. Do they still have WatPubs, Pub crawls, Bombernite, OktoberFest and house parties? I met with tons of people at Watpubs - was even the coordinator twice. I am not a very competitive and so I have no problems talking about assignments with friends (and they had no problems talking with me about them either, of course don't let anyone copy your assignment!!). We all went to the TA hours as most of the time we couldn't figure out how to do half the problems anyways! The assignments at the time were only worth like 1%. Anyways, I truly feel university is what you make of it so enjoy it and have fun, I was sad when it was all over. Many of us ended up finding jobs either in Toronto or Seattle area. I am in Seattle now working at a large software company.
Amazing to hear your experience! It’s been over 5 years since I’ve been there but we still had bomber nights and Oktoberfest and pub crawls, I went to trivia nights at bomber in my last term and remembered it to be fun. I wonder how much things have changed then- of course with this year and online courses being more unusual.
oh my gosh uwaterloo has been one of my biggest dream schools but this just raised so many red flags for me. Can you talk more about the competitive environment at waterloo and how does it specifically show up in the college?
I totally feel you on the loneliness part! I commuted a ton back in the Waterloo days and felt like I made okay friends with a decent number of people but really ended up "floating" around friend groups more than not. Spent too much time "studying" in DC and DP. Trying to form deeper relationship in the second grad school go-around but having a dog and a partner has definitely made that an uphill battle LOL
I have to say that what she said is real. But I'm the type of person who likes being alone lol. So, I don't mind. I think where it hits hard is having to keep moving to various places on your own every four months. I'm in stream 4.
If you are organized there will be free time to do fun stuff even with heavy engineering / CS course loads. There are house parties, pub crawls, clubs, etc. I think the main thing is you need to be organized so you are not wasting so much time / stress thinking about what needs to be done. Going to Toronto every weekend is such a waste of time. Some times people care too much about grades, there are diminishing returns for how much time you put into school work vs the grade you get. You just need to find the right balance.
In upper years, it was a bit better. The first two years I cared more about grades for both co-op and to maintain my Queen Elizabeth scholarship since that and OSAP loans funded my education. And plus, I went from feeling smart in my local highschool to feeling like the dumbest person in the class, so struggled to get somewhat decent grades. If these concepts comes naturally to you, then you'll have no problem having a social life as well. I have a friend who did all of that, went into a stats midterm with little studying and came out with flying colors while I grinded all weekend. So everyone is different in that regard.
She is talking about the overall culture which makes it difficult for most students to have a social life. The assignments might be more independent than group work, tests and CO OP are factors/ barriers you would have to cross to have a decent social life and even if a person manages his / her time well the friends may not be able to do so and hence not available for socializing

I've always thought it would be so cool to study math at such a hardcore program like UW. But right now I really don't think it's for me. I'm having to choose between fighting through the harshness of UW Math or just studying engineering at a more vibrant and social teir 2 school (Basically not as good as UW lol). All universities are competitive and you don’t graduate by just partying. This year my son who is in Waterloo had a much better experience than his friends who went to other universities because they were not organized enough for online learning. WAterloo was organized and more understanding. Not sure about the future but I am saying for first year experience only

I'm considering to apply for the art honour (BA psychology) but I'm not sure if I will be accepted by other universities for a master degree after studying in Waterloo. It seems that they don't teach all psychology courses that are usually required for a bachelor's degree. I am confused.
@@delph.e8580 Hi ! Is there any update about the psychology program ? Is it still difficult to get into psychology masters after doing a bachelor in Waterloo ?
Unfortunately you are not guaranteed a placement, so many first or second year students without much experience may not end up with a co-op job during the competitive summer term

I hate to say it but I met a lot of Chinese American students at university and many of them had the same attitude as you which is that you do not really have the right to have fun, friends, downtime, relaxation, physical exercise, sex, a relationship, but that you are just more or less a robot. Sadly I married a Hong Kong born Chinese and she is also a robotic workaholic. She is no fun but works hard al the time, either at her job or housework.
