HOW I INSTALL THE BLACK CHEVROLET BOWTIE GRILL EMBLEM WITHOUT REMOVING THE GRILL

  • Ever since I did my Chevrolet blackout kit videos I've been getting a ton of questions on how I do the grill emblem without removing the grill or breaking the clips inside of the grill. I figured I would just make a short video showing the way I approach this job.
This is not the correct way to do it and it's not the GM recommended way, they want you to take the front bumper cover off and cut the tabs of the emblem through the back side, and if proper care or precautions are not used you can still break the grill clips, especially the small black bow tie emblems on the bottom driver side corner of the grill. I think the HD trucks run the smaller corner emblems, and those are exceptionally easy to break the clips inside of the grill.
Again this is not the recommended way, but it's just to show everybody how I do it quickly and efficiently.

Awesome, glad it was able to help you.
There are different ways to do it including ways to not damage the original emblem. But i've also seen a lot of broken retaining tabs in grills. It happens, even I've done it.
But this seemed to be the quickest simplest way to do it without damaging the grill if you're replacing that emblem anyways.
And no one is trying to take the grill out to do it properly..😅
I do have to take the front Facia and grill out when I do the illuminated bow tie though. Not a horrible job, Just a lot of screws, and then clips that are pain in the ass.. Especially the suburban's and Tahoe's. 😡

Because trust me, no one's trying to take that grill off 🤣.
It's not that it's at a hard job, it's's just a pain in the ass with all those 7mm screws up and down, and depending on what front fascia you have, there is a lot of clips all around the front that you got to try to pop with a pick or small screw driver. Those damn things break if you just try to pull it 🤷

Great video, thanks. I have a full set of trim tools and I tried to just pop it off like I saw on a dozen other RUclips videos, but my 2022 Colorado just wasn’t having any of that. This method worked perfectly and saved me a broken grille.

Awesome I am glad it worked for you.
Some pop right out, and others just want to fight you and hang on to that grill. I've tried different techniques and this one seems to work the best every time.
Sometimes the Clips in the grill itself break, other times you end up scratching or gouging The Grill around the emblem. And GM recommended that you take the grill out to access the clips from behind.
I was just staring at it thinking there's got to be a better way.

Nobody is trying to take the grill out just to cut two tabs lol.
And on top of it , you need to take the whole facial off to get to the back of the grill on a lot of the newer vehicles.

I got a ton of questions about this after I put those other accessory and blackout kit videos up about 2 years ago. Figured I would just pop a quick 3 minute video up.
Originally GM wanted you to take the whole bumper cover off the thing and cut those clips from the back, but over time we figured out this way and I think they've even updated their service procedure to do it this way by now.
Originally it was nice, they were still paying us to take the whole front bumper cover off, we were getting paid like an hour and it took us 3 minutes LOL.
Obviously when customers came in we would just charge them to do it this way but when the factory is paying, they got the big dollars, let them pay. Lol

It works on all of them, if you have the big Center bow tie it's not quite as easy to break, but if you have the small driver side corner bow tie, if you pry that out it literally breaks the grill tabs 98% of the time..
But this process works on all of them, just pry the golden Center out of the Chrome backing, and then just look in there with a light or whatever and carefully pry the tabs of the grill back while popping it out. A little bit of finesse, and it comes right out with ease.
Basically just pay attention, look at what you're doing and it's simple. Unfortunately I broke a few while trying to learn an easier way LOL.
But once I figured out a way that was pretty much foolproof, I figured share it with the world. These parts are too goddamn expensive to be replacing stuff.
Good luck with it, and good luck with your truck my friend, they have come a long way in the last few years. These trucks have gotten extremely badass from where they were just a couple years ago

Nice! I have 2015 Equinox and want to change the bow ties so this is definitely the easy way! I have to take the back chrome trim off to put in a new switch for the liftgate so that will be easy, but i wasnt sure how I was going to change the front one until now! Thanks!!

There's still a possibility of breaking something, but just be easy and once you look inside the clips and see which ones go where, it pops right out with minimal pressure

Awesome, hope it helped. It's not a complicated job, just a lot of tedious freaking clips between the upper and lower lights on the front.
You don't want to pull to hard because the plastic will break, but you just need to get in there with a plastic tool or small screwdriver and kind of finesse them a little, they all pop right out.
The first time was a complete learning experience, after that it just gets a little bit easier each time.
Then once you get the perfect method to get that front clip off, they redesign the entire front end LOL.
Nuts and bolts were always easy, it's these tucked in hidden clips that make it a process. But the other side of that is, we get a much nicer fit and finish then we've had in previous years. I've always liked the older GMs, but these things are absolutely beautiful today

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  21 день назад +1

I apologize for the late response.
The front emblem is the same.
That one still clips into the grill, and any clip on emblems are the same.
The rear one on the other hand I believe is stuck on with that double sided tape they use.
I usually hit those with a little bit of heat and just try to pull up on it with a plastic tool or pocket screwdriver.
But I get behind it and pull towards me, rather than prying off the paint. It marks so easily.
There is many different techniques that i've seen. I just use that cause It's quicker when doing multiple.
Also, another thing to look out for especially if using some heat is different model and year Equinoxes have different setups on the lift gate. Some have the badge right on the metal itself. But others have the badge on the plastic trim like my old one.
I know it's probably pretty obvious, but something to Be aware of depending on your method of removal. The plastic almost always damages easier than the metal

The thing I still struggle with is those center bow ties. Some pop right out with the flick of a pocket screwdriver, and others you're in there with a screwdriver or 2 and a pic, yet you just can't get behind it. It's a fight🤷‍♂️

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  3 месяца назад +1

The adhesive badges are a little different. The easiest way I have found is to use a heat gun and then a small plastic wedge. A little bit of heat , just work up behind it and it prys off.
You can take the center out and use one of those little holes behind it to pull if it gives you an issue.
For some reason, some of these things pop right off and other times the glue stays stuck on there and you gotta take it off piece by piece, I don't know why.
      Same with the lettering.

It's just a little trick I learned from doing them over time. They recommend taking the grill out which involves the whole front bumper cover and honestly that's just a pain in the ass. Sometimes you can get lucky and pry them out but I'd say at least 30% of the time it breaks the tabs in the grill when you do it that way. Not always, but 30% is still more than I want to deal with LOL
But after doing X amount, I thought there's got to be an easier way. I saw those holes on the back of one of the bow ties I took off. To the next one I tried prying the center out and it worked ridiculously good.
It's a bit of a pain in the ass to get that inside portion started but once you get it it pulls right out. Plus I'd much rather pry on that then trying to pry the bow tie off of the grill where I have a possibility of scratching the grill.
I'm sure there's easier or better ways, but this just works for me every time. Hopefully it will help some others

Would this technique work for the rear tailgate bowtie badge on 2023 Tahoe/Suburban?

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  7 месяцев назад

It does not work the same because that is one of the stuck on badges.
You still have to remove it with heat and a little bit of persistence, but I can tell you, If you pop the center of that style badge out, there is a couple of holes on the backing piece.
I heat the badge to soften the adhesive a little bit with the heat gun, stick a pic or something into that hole to kinda pull it off of a little. At that point, it is much easier to get a plastic wedge tool in between the badge housing and painted surface without scratching or muring anything.
It's still not that hard to heat and pry, but any little advantage I can get to make it safer on the paint I usually try to take.
My own car, fuk it LOL. but people are paying a lot of money for these vehicles, I'd be upset if I saw marks on something I bought.
It's really not that bad though, just be mindful of the painted surfaces, and like I said, a little bit of heat always helps me out to soften things, You'll honestly spend more time thinking about it than you will doing it if you haven't even already.
Happy New Year, and God bless.

Any idea how to remove the small z71 badge? Want to replace with black one without removing the grill…

    • @richdiscoveries
      @richdiscoveries  8 месяцев назад

Not yet. I've only done one Z71 small grill emblem so far, and that day I didn't have a lot of time to really look at everything and try different approaches.
I did find it is different than the small corner bow tie grill emblem as it clips into a small plastic block which then clips into the grill rather than the emblem clipping into the grill itself.
I couldn't really find an opening into the back of that block to access the clips. So what I ended up doing was going between the emblem and the plastic it's clipped to with a small pocket screwdriver. Worked it really slowly so I wouldn't scratch or mar the grill. And I was able to get the very tip of my side cutters behind the emblem enough to snip the bottoms of the clips.
It only went a little bit into the clips but allowed me to pull it out even a little farther and just kind of keep working my way up with the side cutters as it came away from the grill.
I was looking at it and I definitely want to get a couple more because there's gotta be a better way to do it. But like I said unfortunately, I just didn't have a lot of time that day.
I have done a handful of blackout lettering on the Z71 recently but for some reason, not a lot of them have that grill emblem, only one so far. But you know how these packages are, you can get the Z71 package with different options on the truck.
That way definitely was not the best way to do it, And I had to slow down and look at it a couple of times because it seemed very easy to damage stuff with that method, but it worked with no visible scratches, but there was some behind the emblem itself.
That's how I ended up doing it. And I can't guarantee that way will work again. But if you Change it, just take your time, look at all the different options and just be careful. And hell, if you find a way that works better or easier, please feel free to pop back in here. Definitely been wanting to find a good method on those.
Sorry for the long reply, but I've been waiting for this question only because I know that are out there now.
And just a couple of years ago, I think even still on the HD. The grill pops out separately from the front bumper cover, but most of the light duty trucks and Tahoe's all require taking that whole damn front bumper off. Which in itself isn't horrible, just a lot of screws and some clips that take a little get used to, but it's just a pain in the ass without a lift. That concrete is getting hard to kneel down on, and cold lol.
Good luck man, and like I said just play with it a little bit, but be mindful of where the tools are touching seeable areas of the grill

But if it's the big Chevrolet script across the tailgate, if you haven't done it yet, just clean everything really well with alcohol wipes. Put them on extremely lightly, they are semi-forgiving at first and you can kind of pull back under them with a razor blade without hitting the paint to get them up to redo them.
Again if you have not done it yet, it's not that bad, just take your time and they come out good

We all came up with multiple different theories, but this one seems to have worked the best. Extremely easy.
Although it's not that hard to take a bumper cover off of vehicle, it's just extremely time consuming. A ton of little 7 mm screws, multiple plastic clips that easily break, I would recommend people doing it this way. So much less stuff to break.
Even being in the business, once you figure out every little clip and retainer, they completely change the whole body design, then you have to relearn it all again, usually by breaking a Fastener or two in the process LOL

Yes, I've got the plastic wedges and I use them for all the black lettering and also the rear chevy bow ties that are on with adhesive. They work excellent and don't scratch.
But I do so many of these a week, there's no reason for me to save them. So this is just a quick way to pop it off, not take my time to work the clips so the grill doesn't break, and get on to the next job.
These bigger ones aren't that bad with plastic wedges, the grill is pretty resilient. But the small emblems on the bottom driver side corner of the grill breaks the tabs in the grill friggin tabs so easily.

Yes.. there is several rumors behind how they came up with that bow tie, but the Swiss flag seems to be the most reasonable. Chevrolet was a Swiss race car driver, and he co-founded it with one of the founders of GM that had been removed from his position.
