This song is about the often complex relationship between mothers and Daughters. The license plate on the car says 1938. The only people named in the video is mother. Once in the first verse where it says "I hide my Mother away" this is a metaphor for placing photos keepsakes of that person in a box that has been put away. The place Mother is mentioned is on the Morbius Sign (which by the way is a mathematical term for a repeating loop where if you are inside of it you can't tell what is up or down or forward or backward etc. Right below the words "Morbius Sign" are the words "A Song of Mother" and below that the word "Subconsciousness". All the pictures on the table are of mothers and Daughters various generations. The first one we see is of IU with a young girl obviously her daughter, but IU isn't paying her any attention and IU is wearing the dress that is caught in the trap door and the one she is wearing in the scene where she is laying down with her daughter. This is the single memory of Her that is referred to in the opening of the MV. The daughter has recovered the things she hide away after having looked through them with a new prespective. And she puts them in the trunk of the car, which is shown metaphorically again as IU laying the trunk. The video also uses color to distinguish various states consciousness. The red color is the imagination, or dream or fantasy of the person. One of the best examples of this is near the end where the daughter is on the floor, having gone through all the things she had hide away. Her mother helps up the daughter (note that this is the 1st time they actually touch) and the daughter them brings her mother in close and hugs her. This is all a dream, fantasy or whatever because the mom isn't actually physically in this world anymore. But the daughter has an understanding of her mother she didn't have as a child.
