I’d love to see a feis prep video. I’ve only just started dance just under a year ago and haven’t gone to a feis yet. Any tips before I try that would be awesome.
Did you say that your shoes last a few YEARS ?? As a ballet dancer, the world of irish dance is entirely foreign too me! The longest time I've ever had ballet shoes- soft shoes or pointe shoes, is a couple months, MAYBE a year for soft shoes, but I know many professionals go through a pair of pointe shoes in a day! It's kind of insane lol...
Right?? So funny how we can all be a part of this dance world and have everything be so entirely different. I had a friend in high school who was very dedicated to ballet and I couldn't believe the differences between technique, lifestyle, "gear" (if you will), and performance. And I'm only speaking from the competitive side of Irish dance; I have friends who have become professionals and I'm sure their experience with their shoes is different, as well. So fun and interesting to learn about different styles!
I had R&D ghillies and they stretched out SOOOO fast, the leather is super thick though which is surprising. I have very long and thin feet and they made my feet look rather wide with how stretched out they got. I bought a pair of Hulluchan reds at the New England Oireachtas and I'm in love with them, they make your arches look gorgeous and are super tight and supportive, so my recommendation goes to my Hulluchans!
+Hadley S. Wow, how sad!! It's such a great concept but you're the third person to tell me how amazing the Hullachans are! I know exactly which shoes I'm getting!! Thank you so much for giving me all the details! :)
Hey I live in Ireland and I am an Irish dancer but I do festival Irish dancing but I was just wondering do you do feis or festival ?? ( you might not know the difference but anywho 😂)
Love this your bag is like identical to mine went to worlds march this year and last year and just loved it I broke my ankle 2 years ago and danced on it for 2 weeks because I was told it wasn't broken !! Hate hospitals xx
Thank you! That's so funny! Was it a Betsey Johnson, too? WOW!! I've danced on a broken foot but not with a broken ankle! That must have been ridiculously painful!!
I tried them on and I wasn't the biggest fan of how they felt... I'm wearing older shoes for now (different than the ones shown here, but I don't remember the brand of either, lol). I'll be sure to do an update if I get new soft shoes!!
+FanEdits 07 I'm glad you love dancing so much! I'm in open, as well! Due to injury and finishing college, I've had to take some time off. I hope to return to competition this year!
I recommend halluchan pros, they are really good in my opinion and you can get them in wide and thin with different sizes of course and also they are well padded. thy have a new version which is slightly different but just as good!
I dance for Celtic Steps - Western Region! :) Oh my gosh - that is so incredibly kind and it means the WORLD to me!!! Your sweet comment made it on to my Snapchat! Sending you oodles of virtual hugs! xx
Hi. I find Faye’s dance shoes best! They are really nice on your feet and they are super comfortable and easy to get used to! They stretch a lot! 😅 I have wide feet and they are amazing! Ly
ryan and o’donnell soft shoes are amazing!!! great support and strong toe box..... would recommend trying them out at least..... never ever get ryan and o’donnell hard shoes, they are horrible quality! have you ever tried fay hard shoes?
FACES by Cait B It's going okay (it's the right ankle)... I was running for vault in gymnastics on Saturday and I almost sprained it, again! Luckily I was able to hop on my left to stop me from crashing on my ankle! I turned it just enough to make it a little weak! It's been crazy, I sprained my ankle at the end of January, then in mid-March, and almost did it again on Saturday! Also could you do more Irish Dance related videos? Everywhere there's ballet but not much about Irish Dance....
My gosh! Those darn ankles, they take so long to heal completely! Be careful, girl!! Well, of course! I have another Parade of Champions look planned for this summer. :) Do you have any videos in particular you'd like to see?
FACES by Cait B IKR?! My ankles have been such a pain! I am constantly babying them! Video suggestions? Sure! Here is what I would like to see: Tips and Tricks (possibly tutorial) on how to...turn out, keep my arms back, you know the common positions in Irish Dance. I would like those tutorials so I can at least polish my dancing for shows and stuff. Also maybe an Irish dancer themed Q&A, I would definitely leave a bunch of questions. BTW I am a Beginner 1 dancer (I know very small), who's been dancing for 2 and a half years. I have only done one competition (I'm not bhecompetetive type...) . Even with one competition I have the steps of a novice/prizewinner. Thanks for talking to me! I wasn't expecting you to respond!
Ankles are a rough body part to strengthen, as well. I'll include in my video how to strengthen them! Thank you so much for all of your suggestions! I added them to my list of ideas - they are all great! I'm excited to film them! Who is a dancer you look up to? Competitions can be stressful, but I bet you'll learn to love them! At least for the makeup and the dresses - it's the best part about our sport! And you having harder steps means you're a natural talent; keep it up, girl, and you'll find that competitive spirit. I promise. ;) And of course! Why wouldn't I? You're a sweetheart! xx
At my Irish dancing school yuan either rent or buy shoes. For the outfits you have to pay (no rent) and yeah. I went to my first feis today and I did 3 dances and I won 2 tropies for 1st place and one medal for 2nd
Oh my goodness! I'm so excited for you!! It's perfectly fine to have butterflies but don't be too intimidated - you are going to have so much fun! I'd love to hear all about how it went - come back and let me know!! xx
I’ve been dancing since I was 4, but ended up being held back in beginner and advanced beginner for so long since I was so young and couldn’t grasp much. I’m 14 now and in preliminary championship, but there’s so many people I know that just started recently and they’re 18. There’s this one 10 year old that started 2 years ago and recently came back from worlds this year. You can achieve anything you put in the hard work for.
I have been irish dancing for 11 years and in my experience and personal preference, Ryan & O'Donnell soft shoes have a more pointed toe then my current shoes, so they just do not fit the shape of my foot. the leather is thicker then most shoes so they require more breaking in time, however they do last longer then Fays Celtic Choice shoe, for example, which I used for many years. I currently wear I currently wear Rutherfords Cavan pumps (I think) and they fit my foot very well, however the heel is a little shorter so it tends to slip down a little bit. I hope this helps at all!
Wow!!!! Thank you so much! This helps immensely! I tried on the R&Ds and they did not fit my little, wide feet at all. I am definitely going to try on the Hullachans and the Rutherfords! Thanks again! :)
The ones I show here are Rutherfords (which I've loved!), but throughout my comment section a lot of people have suggested Hullachan pros! I would try each of them on and see which suits your feet the best. I wish you loads of luck in your Irish dance career!!
I am in prelim yet at the GB'S I developed performance anxiety. (So I was physically sick before I feised.) I actually know several people who started later and went on to be very successful in the sport! It means you know what you truly want and will work even harder to make your dream come to fruition. I didn't even know what Oireachtas (our regionals) was until I was 17! Find a dance school near you and ask to observe a class. There will probably be several schools you can visit. Then pick the one you liked the most - teaching style, friendly dancers, etc. They know you're beginning so they'll be teaching you all the basics. Once you fall in love with the sport and see yourself advancing, you'll be acing competitions and moving up quickly. Don't worry about "not fitting in" if there are younger dancers in your class. Everyone has a different experience. Own yours and enjoy every second!!

You should not have gum at Irish dance
The gum is for after a snack before class or after class entirely! 😊
