I had sworn to "Defend the Constitution against all Enemies both foreign and domestic" but on the personal level we were expected to extend the equivalent of "sharing bread and salt" to our Soviet Guests and although it took a bit of time because they also had to fine tune their Cultural/Political programming....very interesting and honestly eye opening was OUR OWN cultural programming!?!.....I mean this might seem ridiculous to some of you younger readers but especially during the Cold War, unless you had actually met a Russian, the Media/Hype of the period evoked mental pictures of fucking KLINGONS for God's sake!?! It was during my time with our Russian Guests that I simply fell in love with this haunting yet at the same time blood stirring beautiful March!! This Hymn/March in my humble opinion truly captured the deepness and the strength of the Russian Soul forged through the centuries on the anvil of Human Destiny with the life blood and tears and sweat of Her Children as the essence to both Her sadness and beauty....as obviously propaganda as this clip is (nice touch fading to Mr. Putin at the end there....right after the fade-out of Peter the Great's picture.....😊)....I believe why not?! It is my understanding that Nicholas II gave the march not to Mountbatten but rather to Alfonso XIII of Spain on the occasion of his marriage to Ena of Battenberg - when Mountbatten was just a young child. It was Alfonso who in 1922 (when Mountbatten in turn got married) passed the march on to him in memory of his Russian uncles Nicky and Serge (Serge having been I believe C-in-C of the Preobrazhensky). It is now, courtesy of Mountbatten, the Slow March of the Royal Marines.
The Preobrazhensky March is also the Slow March of HM Royal Marines, and was granted for use to Prince Louis of Battenburg (later Earl Mountbatten of Burma) by his uncle, Tsar Nicholas II.

@@FrLawREagreed, but all people in history must be remembered despite their actions? Maybe it was to raise awareness to certain political figures in history, some of which are overlooked more than others.
I spent years wondering what was the march played in the James Bond movie Goldeneye in the scene where defense minister Mishkin observes a parade. Well, here it is.
J. Stalin told Gen. D. Eisenhower at the end of WWII "if the USA and Russia were allies nobody in the world would dare make war again". Something to think about.
Great presentation of a Russian classic. The first band performance of the march is about the way it should be played for parade marching. The choral episode gets the blood up, and the last band performance is about at the speed of a lively airborne shuffle! The orthodox chant at the beginning sets the stage for imagining Holy Russia in all its imperial splendor, Peter's elite Preobrajensky regiment leading the way.

That sounds right. As a child, I remember my great-grandmother and that generation talking in whispers about "Nicky and Alex and their family". I think my grandfather mentioned that the march came from our Russian family via our Spanish relations. I do know that Mountbatten (he and my grandfather were cousins once removed) was the one who introduced to the British military.
I believe he's referring to the introductory chorus, which is a hymn, and not to the march itself. That theme also appears in "1812 Overture" and "Marche Slav", by Tschaikovsky.
@bquadros The music is a hymn familiar to everyone in the Russian Orthodox Church. (I don't know its exact name.) You can find out by asking someone in the OCA (Orthodox Church of America). Tchaikovsky used it to symbolize traditional Russia. It's the equivalent of "My Country 'Tis of Thee."
