For the metal plate, they generally use 14 to 16 gauge galvanized steel which isn't too expensive. About 8 inches wide does the trick, and using m5 bolts, nuts, and washers to mount it is ideal because the wood will soon not hold the nail or screw and loosen the metal plate.
