    As good as cinema can possibly be. Saw it the day it was released in a Boston theater. Not a seat was empty. I sat next to a very famous sports journalist, one of the finest ever, and he like most of us was hiding his eyes at times and crying throughout. It felt like it was impossible to breathe at times. No one left the theater after the credits rolled and the lights came on for about 10 mins. No one spoke, no one moved.
    Most frightening feeling I ever experienced. The journalist asked me if I was OK and then a stranger hugged him.

      I remember seeing this in my local cinema and when we all left I noticed an elderly couple struggling to make their way to the exit. The lady in question passed out in the aisle and she had to be helped out by the staff. They were both in tears. I'll never forget it. I can only imagine it must have gave them flashbacks. Life is so cruel at times.

      Jack Nicholson in 1992 & Ralph Fiennes in 1993. Two of the greatest performances ever to lose to a more-deserving Oscar-winning performance. Gene Hackman in Unforgiven and Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive. Of course, Hollywood doesn't make movies like A Few Good Men, Unforgiven, The Fugitive, and Schindler's List anymore.

Every once in a while, I throw in my subjective opinion in response to what somebody said. But I prefer to discuss more important things that are true, objective, and relevant. 4:58 what gets me about this scene is how the SS soldier is both clearly young, probably 22 or 23, and when he stops the doctor he says “she’s as good as dead, leave her.”
    He’s not barking orders at him, he basically telling him to be smart and save himself. The doctor tries to buy more time and asks to bring her inside, so the soldier shoots her directly in the head. Of course we’re horrified by what he just did, and what surprises me even more is that Spielberg makes sure that we see the soldier sort of back away at the scene he just created, as if he was just as surprised by what he did as we were as well as the audience. His hand is also shaking when she falls to the ground the doctor is left shocked and traumatized by what just happened.
    He doesn’t kill the doctor too, he just tells him to join the line and pushes him away. He doesn’t sound angry or vengeful, he says it like he’s secretly pleading for the Jewish doctor to be reasonable (as crazy as that sounds considering the situation) and just save himself before he gets killed too. This guy probably never killed anyone before that point in the film, and I doubt the character ever thought he would up until that point. A lot of the death squads had men like that, soldiers who weren’t really qualified for the normal armed forces so were chosen for these “special occasions” and many of them were at first very nervous and traumatized by what they did to innocent civilians. However, as time went on, most of them became very proficient at killing, as well as desensitized to the screams and violence, and some even started to develop sadistic tendencies or a certain pleasure to killing. It’s a scary thing what people can be convinced to do.

    • @mh53j
      @mh53j 14 дней назад +5

      Actually, the SS had to replace many of its soldiers with members of the ethnic groups they were eliminating because this type of "mission" did affect the soldiers. They had wives, children, elderly parents -- families as well. Not all were murderous beasts.
      It's always easy to find someone that will betray their own kind if you pay them enough or just allow them to live.

    This seems to be a very effective re-enactmanent of terrible events that should be remembered in some way. Perhaps this type of re-enactment will give some sort of peace to the people whose lives were changed. Perhaps people who have no direct contact with these cultures should be made to learn from the terrible events which are re-enacted in this film.

      @@MrTsiolkovsky Doctors and nurses are not being politically compelled to perform chemical and physical castration on minors. Sadly the ones that are doing it are just doing it to make themselves rich. They are taking advantage of the progressive liberal cult of ideology to make money. They are committing chemical and physical castration on more than minors, that would be bad enough, they are taking advantage of parents suffering from Munchausen by Proxy to mutilate, castrate, and irreparably destroy the future of children as well as young adults in order to make themselves rich. It is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen in my life as a medical man. I would surrender my nursing license, and live on the street as a homeless person before I would subject a child to this atrocity.
