Data hopes to be helped from his nightmares by Dr. Sigmund Freud, a holodeck program which clearly wasn't written for androids! This episode is available on DVD!
This is epic! "Clearly indicating an unconcious desire to posses your own mother." -Data says, "But I dont have a mother." "Do not interupt! The knife, in its violent connotation, suggests a certain feeling of sexual inadequacy." -Data says, "But I have no sexual desire." "Agh, impotence on top of everything! It is all becoming clear to me now. There might be a paper in this." Data is the best
Don't forget--- "Classic transference. The animosity towards me is 'zhee' animosity you feel towards your father....you are a polymorphously-perverse individual!"
Yes, especially when Carl Jung would actually be trying to understand, not transpose onto others reverse transpositions of their desire to understand their own lack of understanding.
How could Freud not ask what kind of cake he dreamed of? There could be so much unconscious information hidden just in the type of cake, let alone the topping.
Well, by this point in the series Data had already reached the conclusion that the Enterprise's *actual* psychologist, Troi, was completely and utterly incompetent at her job. Therefore, even a holodeck version of a centuries-dead expert in the field who would nonetheless have not been qualified to work with androids seemed like a better choice. Although, ironically enough, it would eventually be revealed that Data *did* have a mother!
Yeah, he could've gone to Troi and said 'counselor, i juat had a dream where I chopped you up, because a random workman told so, and as you were a cake I did it...'
Or, perhaps, it was because it was a brilliant thing to write into the story :) Also Freud is an expert on dreams, Troi isn’t. It’s much more entertaining to see Freud revoked in the holodeck than a lame session at Troi’s isn’t it
@@Thatslifebro_ It's always been impossible for me to take Freud seriously precisely because of the amount of time he spends talking about what he sees as widespread mother-son incestuous desires. I think Freud had mother issues more severe than anyone he ever counseled.
You can the sepperate Fraud Into Frau-d which ,If we Take the German Word Frau and the most Common meaning of "the d" makes Woman-/Miss-Dick which also reflects many of Freuds theories.
I kind of felt something with this: Rod Loomis played in an earlier episode of TNG (I forget which one), but he also played Sigmund Freud on Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure in 1989. I think Rod Loomis would have been an excellent Sigmund Freud in this episode.
The fact that Freuds programm knows what Data is and is able (to a degree) to analyse his artificial mind and his "dreams" is very interesting. The real one lived like 100 years ago, didnt he? Damn, Star Trek raised so much questions and stuff to think about back then! I really miss that.
charonchiron1 I am german ofc I know that. That was the reason why I wrote the word "even". It´s just interesting, that they even implement this way of pronunciation.
Of course it isn't too hard for an English actor to emulate a "german" accent to convince an English audience he's a German character speaking English. However, convincing _a German audience_ that the character is actually German, even when speaking English, would require significantly more skill, I think.
@@RH-ro3sg hm.. if i understand what you meant and didn't interpret it wrong.. well, i'm from austria and to me it sounds like most people i know trying to speak english. I've read some comments that said he had a russian, scottish or even african accent and i'm sure they come from people who don't speak german. To me it sounds like about all of my teachers, classmates, friends and family soeaking english, they all have this shitty accent because they aren't good. So, i think it would be hard for an english actor to fake this accent but to the german audience he sounds like a german.

Data should have gone in a session with Carl Jung... I think they would understand each other quite well.
General Pedrowsky so true Freud was a nutter himself
I read that during the writing session for this episode, they actually considered Carl Jung, but felt Freud would have more name recognition.
Yes, especially when Carl Jung would actually be trying to understand, not transpose onto others reverse transpositions of their desire to understand their own lack of understanding.
@@SMotaal LMAO
At several points it looked like Data was about to say, "Excuse me, but I believe this is bullshit."
I very much like that the narrative allowed Data to recognize he wasn't being helped.

Most therapists would appreciate the candor. Especially since it was more "Alice in Wonderland" and less "Saw".
A centuries-dead expert who, I'm led to believe, has been more or less discredited in almost everything he proposed.
Perhaps he didn't want to obtain psychoanalysis from the same person the dream was about?

“How BIG was the knife?”
Heh.. ehh I see where this is headed
25cm length...oh myyyyy...
...that's a pretty good Freud.
The best part is that Freud's interpretations make sense...UNTIL he brings up the "mother" thing.
Well since he was made a scientist man creator father. He totally does have a "mother" issure.
Yes, but thats Freud. Always with the mother issues.

I don't think it made any sense at all
Data was clearly a-noid lol
The actor playing Freud is Bernard Kates. Great job! I love the weird glee he brings to this character.
If you change the E in "Freud" to an A you get "Fraud"

Haha, Freuds english even sounds like a german who speaks english ;D
what a surprise. Freud was from Vienna. Austria. Guess what language they speak in Austria.

This one takes the cake.
I was hoping Matthew McConaghy was going to interrupt this scene, asking "Tootsky?"
Of all of the psychs data could have chosen he chose the WORST ONE, gets me every time 😂
I wonder why Data's not going to Troi for counseling...
The real Freud wasn't much more helpful.
I had to check to see who played Freud because he sounds so much like Major Hochstetter. I just wanted to hear him say "WHO IS ZIS MAN!"
i dont why he is a better counslier than a betazoid
"Is this what humans referred to as pilpul?"
Dad issues. He was right.
That was total B.S. !!! I know that
Imagine playing Sigmund Freud in Star Trek TNG lol
Thumbs up if you think that Sigmund Freud would have made a better recurring character than Vic Fontaine.
yep
why does Freud sound like Col Hostetler ... Im half expecting him to yell "who is this man"

burtonrules123 It’s a reference to Friends, where Joey plays Freud in a cheesy, low-budget musical, and the one song we hear has similar lyrics.
Data said " when i woke up" hmmm or turned him self. On
Elmer Fudd used to study psychoanalysis in Vienna while listening to Another Brick In The Wall. He would get into Fwoid while getting into Fwoid.
im watching the episode of star trek tng that haves the freud, i swear that im not a nerd
Have Freud a scottish Accent?
like flaming globes!
he looks like sidorovich
