My husband says I have a bionic nose. The worst for me is when sellers try to cover up the smell with plug ins and stuff with chemical artificial scents. Yuck!
Artificial scents can really turn off a lot of buyers because they can trigger migraines or asthma attacks...not the first impression ANY seller is aiming for!
I love odoban! I had a listing with a resident parrot. Stinky!! Went thru exact steps with enzyme cleaner and had to have ducts ckeaned..home sold! Thanks for this needed vid!
GREAT Vid! first two week we had our dog- she wasn't potty trained. so we wound up tearing out the carpet and putting in new hardwood. After two weeks, she's never had an accident, but we had to take her out every two hours until she figured it out. Some dogs need to be walked 2-3 times a day and if they're not able to go outside and be dogs, they'll be dogs inside your house! and that ozone machine is a great investment! mine works wonders!
Good video. I have taken the carpet out of the basement and the master bedroom in this house I bought in April. The subfloor in the master is black in some spots. I have scrubbed with warm water and it's gotten better. I used a carpet cleaner and it made the smell in the other bedroom worse. I will take out all the carpet and most likely put down pergo flooring like I did in my other rental house and it looks really good. I will try using kilz or the enzymatic cleaner or the contractor said to put down a second subfloor and then put the pergo on top of that. I hope that makes the smell or musty odor go away.
Hi - My new cat kindly urinated in our vent and Ive been using the Natures Miracle Urine Destroyer and everytime I think I've cleaned it...turn on that heater and the smell just comes right out like nobody business. I have tossed the vent register in the garbage and got a new one but the smell still exists in my floor ducts. Any suggestions?
My daughters dogs have ruined my living room floor which is all wood. We are going to scrub it as best we can, use Kilz Restoration to pain the floor, then paint the floor and stencil, then seal. Do you think that will work?
This was a very helpful video. Thanks a lot...So i did end up using the UV flashlight and it was an eyeopener, there are many pee stains in every bedroom. Is it still worth trying the Enzyme based cleaning from carpet cleaning company? OR it would be waste of money if there are several stains? I wouldnt know how old these stains are since the tenants were in the property for 7yrs. Hopefully you can help answer this. Thanks again.
Hi there. I guess you could look at this two ways: 1. Cleaning the specific spots with an enzyme cleaner and then overall carpet cleaning is a lot cheaper than ripping out the flooring, sealing the sub flooring and putting in new flooring, so you might as well try it first. 2. If the carpet is cheap/builder grade, that stuff really doesn’t last much longer than about 5 years with normal wear and tear anyway, and you’ve got 7+ years on it plus animal pee, so…time for new carpet (but seal the subfloors before you reinstall)!
Thanks For the response. Actually This was a brand new home from builder. So ya std builder carpet grade :) The carpet in bedrooms however is not too bad (minus the pee stains n smell) but stairs and main livingnroom carpet looks beaten down, so have decided to change that to vinyl. And maybe try cleaning the bedrooms 1st and hopefully I get lucky 😊
So I decided to remove all carpets rather than waste time in cleaning I picked up Kilz Max Restoration Primer for Stain/Odor blocking, but can i apply this directly on the subfloor Or do i need to first clean the sub floor with vinegar/soda/Enzyme,etc. Before paint? Thanks
@@nikbadshah I'd just apply directly to the subfloor since it is supposed to be odor blocking. Attempting to clean a semi-absorbent surface like a subfloor for old, soaked in urine is a loosing battle....hence the need to just seal/block it!
Such a great video, Emily! I had no idea about the blacklight trick! We use them to check for scorpions but now it has a second job! Thanks for giving us a range of solutions to this *stinky* problem 😂

I’ve been using the ozone machine in the basement as that’s where we found a lot of old animal poop it’s been exhausting it’s been tamed heavily but a light linger yet I’ll will try my fogger for the ceilings and basement to see if that does the trick
Just went to a house today, the smell was strong. Suprised sellers did not clean and eliminate the pet odor. They are selling it way higher than it should be.
What about wood or laminate floors? I moved to an apartment that has laminate and wood floors and the bedroom and closet stink - the previous tenant has a male cat
Awesome, Brian! I hope you don't have too many stinky listings, but when you do, you'll know what to do! Get yourself a blacklight flashlight! The link for the one I have is in the description box.
The Fizzion tablets that become a spray work amazingly to get rid of pet urine. We were able to save our mattress after our cat had a major health issue and peed on our bed. You could put your nose on the bed and the smell and any stain was gone. We've also used it to stop one of our current cats from spraying by the front door use to the neighborhood cats spraying the outside of the door. Spraying both sides with the Fizzion has made them all stop and the smell is gone
Thanks for the information! I am very interested in anything that works to get rid of cat urine smell! It's a big problem in a lot of houses for sale so I frequently am dealing with as a Realtor.
Isnteas of changing the carpet & underlay, Could you just run the ozone machine for few days? Will it suck off the odor off the carpet underlay?? ps-there is strong odor through emtire house and likely many pee areas neglected by my tenant over the last 7 years
@@jesusxcaroify I’d leave the windows shut in order to help the ozone concentrate in the area you’re treating. Remember, it is not safe for people or pets to be in a house with an ozone machine running for extended periods of time.
@@jesusxcaroifyYes! It is not safe for you to breathe a lot of concentrated ozone. Turn the machine on and leave. When you come home, turn it off and leave again for a while to give the house time to air out (use fans, open windows, etc to speed this part up).
Great video! The Enzyme spray worked great for me when I first bought my home. My friends just bought a home that has very high odour levels from a cat. They’ve ripped up the flooring in the entire house, cleaned everything they can clean, then used a spray from a mould and asbestos abatement company, painted the floors with killz and cut out the drywall from the floor 2 feet up, then painted the sills and studs. The odour was still lingering So they had another company come in with two large ozone machines and ran them for 4 hours, The house smelled good the first day but the second day the smell started to come back and now a week later it’s almost as if nothing had been done. They now have a company coming in to remove all of the insulation in the attic and they have completely gutted the entire basement.Any suggestions on what they could do if the insulation removal doesn’t help.
Hmmm....Have they had the ductwork cleaned? Run the ozone machines for a few days...not just hours. Search the house at night with a black light to find the source(s) of the smell.
Yeah, but what if it's your neighbour letting their dog use the entire unit as a dog toilet? It's so smelly and almost unbearable and management hasn't been able to get those people out yet. What about an ozone generator? Help!

Yes, the blacklight will help you find cat pee, too. Unfortunately, cat urine has an EVEN MORE unpleasant odor that can be quite a challenge to get rid of. If you have a problem-peeing cat, in all honesty, you should probably resign yourself to the fact that you'll need to remove flooring and seal the subfloor.
