    FOR ALL OF YOU WITH THE COMMENTS ABOUT JUST BUY OR USE A TENT: I've done a lot of tenting ... have you ever touched the side walls and had them start dripping?? or bought a tent that was supposed to be water proof but wake up to it dripping on you in the middle of a storm at 2 am ?? none of that is fun .. so although there is a noise issue to be solved ... its dry
    And as far as the comments about the homeless cooking meth with the burner .. I used to work with homeless people and I've known plenty that don't do drugs and would love a way to heat water for a cup of coffee first thing in the morning or a way to heat a can of soup on a crappy rainy day .. maybe you should try not judging everyone as being the same
    I think this is a great concept Loved the first one the best still.

There may be a fevv bad apples ( the same as the rest of society ) but that doesnt mean all homeless people are bad . And the Majority that did recieve a shelter like this vvould definately help them have a place to stay vvhile raising their self esteem & give them some privacy so they can change their clothing & possibley get a full nights sleep because they felt safe & secure enough to relax & actually rest. Also I allvvays vvant a cup of coffee in the morning & cant blame Anyone vvho does regardless of their domestic situation, & TY for having donated your time to help your fellovv human beings

      @@rogerwhite9484 Sure tents are certainly safe, but the problem here is that you can't expect to survive long term in a tent. It will degrade after a few months of constant exposure to the elements. Tents just aren't designed for long term use. This guy's concept would last a whole lot longer and be a comfortable retreat on long cold nights.

    I've been homeless. It is a feeling that terrifies me to the core. Let me say the feeling of vulnerability is the worst. The elements the second and needing good sleep the third.
    To be able to have a protection around you, a place you can lock, a place for what little you do have and depend on is like hitting the lottery. These are safe havens and will allow for these people to regroup and move forward. God Bless you and your brain, most of all the inspiration you have given.

    What a blessing people like this man is. His thoughts are for other people. He puts a plan in action. This could save lives. It keeps homeless persons out of the elements. It beats what my community does...pass-out cheap blankets (one each) only during dangerously frigid weather. Though, I understand, that is the most that many of us can do to help. But we ARE helping. Please don't dis-incentivize people with your criticism; after all, most criticisers are not themselves doing ANYTHING (let's be honest). I am proud of the people who make a difference. I certainly would not knock their good intentions. They are compassionate people. Remember...if you want to stand out, do something. The vast majority of us don't. I hear people complain "God didn't make ME special" (as a veiled complaint that there are rich and powerful people in the world, so why look to me?).

    Wow! You criticized your great effort and worthy project, but if you only knew how many people living on the street would love to hear the sound of rain on the roof over their head. (Someone complained about their shoes until they met a man with no feet) You should be very proud of this project and submit your prototype to an inventions promo co. The thought alone deserves credit and the effort, labor and special attention to detail is award winning! There's not enough being done to combat homelessness. I think you should push this project. I can actually see a row of these maybe a foot apart, side by side, colorful flowers in between each unit. Maybe I'm overboard, but this is an extremely thoughtful project that shouldn't be taken for granted.

    What a great idea. What an amazing garden, and surrounds! When you are towing it at 4.46, it looks like some kind of lifeform moving through the wilderness! But really, this is such a good idea, and it's a great tragedy of today's times, when so many people are affluent, that there are even homeless people at all. I met a lady in San Francisco living on the street. My heart went out to her. She was so nice and gentle, aged about 50, but every night she slept rough. It was November, and boy was it cold on the streets, but she had no place to go except under a pile of blankets with newspapers for a mattress. Angelina Jolie poses for social media crying, with her arms around orphaned African kids, but she's got about $10 million or more in the bank! Crazy world.

    These are great. I live in Baltimore city, and the homeless rate is unbelievable. After nearly becoming homeless myself, literally through no fault of my own, I realized how quickly someone could lose everything. I then found that directly across the street from me, there was a very well hidden homeless camp. I'm not great at building structures, but I've built twig stoves, gasification stoves and tent stoves for a very long time, so I did what I could. Eventually the city came in and moved them out: I still wonder about those HUMAN BEINGS! Baltimore has done some horrendous things to the homeless, and these little shelters could have saved so many lives. God bless you for your selflessness!

  • @gparra21

    I sure do appreciate your efforts, what a lovely gesture. I work in a hospital in Los Angeles County that primarily treats homeless and mentally ill patients. Most homeless people are not homeless because they lack fundamental resources for shelter. This is profoundly difficult and complex. While these shelters would seemingly provide a first step in achieving security and a foundation to progress from, I can tell you that for sure they would be destroyed or made unsanitary in very short order.There is a diagnosis called "gravely disabled" that needs to be legislatively addressed. People who are truly gravely disabled need to be committed to chronic care facilities. Most will not agree to this, especially in a country like ours where personal freedom is fundamental to the fabric of society. As impossibly expensive as that may seem, I assure you it is cheaper than the continuous ER and temporary treatment that they receive now. Again, I applaud your selflessness. You are a very good man.

    that's awesome that you've thought of this and built one! you can build these very cheap if you find building materials, bedding, lighting, etc. that someone would be throwing away, going to garage sales or second hand stores and/or getting donations. additionally, people can volunteer building these. it's good that you put a lock on the door so that they can safely lock themselves inside. maybe you can put a lid and lock on a compartment inside so that when they leave, they can have their things inside locked up in case someone breaks in. either that, or have a locking outside door. if these are going to cold states, then try to put insulation on the floor and/or walls. the other thing is to put sturdy wheels on the bottom and some sort of handle in case they want to move the structure.

    This is nice for sleeping rooms. Especially if there's little fear of vandalism.
    I think the better, long term thing is to get container trucks. You can make them with four residences, and security of a steel box with a computer to lock/unlock it.
    I know this, because I woke up from a coma thinking about it, and couldn't stop.
    One container holds 4 pods, another on top of it holds 2, and above that, 1. Around it you can have a container truck built for showers.
    Key to my design was the ability for inhabitants to do jobs for the complex, and making their home like a vending machine; when you quit doing your jobs, you get evicted. And the jobs don't need to be 8/5/40; they can be community service and updated by these clever 'keys'. Do something right, and the person needing the help validates your work.
    The pods could be useful for homes of battered women; no identification outside, nice steel outer shell...even four feet for utilities, just locked-in on one side.
    The problem is, right now they want $2,000 for container trucks. That will change. LA has so many of them, they darken the sky just before sundown. And they virtually don't rust...

      I think this would be perfect for churches or VFW's to buy and place on their properties and allow the homeless to have them as a secure place during the winter season for free . But give them the option of renting / buying them . I know it would only work in towns that allowed it but what a great first step to help the homeless . I'm sure the church and vfw would have people who own businesses that could hire them for jobs . I'm sure it would go a long way in helping them gain self esteem . A little town of homeless houses would be great . I saw a video once on here where they did Just that. They had gardens , a laundry , portable bathrooms, a general store . They had rules about drinking and drugs . Even had a AA meeting place I think . The buildings weren't as small as these . They were tiny homes . Those even had tvs. With everything going on and help being taken away left and right, seeing these videos gives me hope that there are still more of us than them

Also, there are many places (like parts of Arizona - like Phoenix) where it only rains 10 times per year and sometimes just 1/10 of an inch. Your design is a great solution for emergency shelters. Kudos! Great job!

    As a medic I work with the homeless on a daily basis. I do have a huge problem with giving "handouts" to the homeless, but I am willing to give help to those who need it. I think if you took small shelters like this and put them in communities then tasked the residents with specific responsibilities I think it would be great.

    • @mikel9567
      @mikel9567 7 лет назад +30

      What attitude am I supposed to have John? Am I supposed to jump up and down and give handouts to every homeless person. I work in a large city with a huge homeless population. We have several tent cities spread through out the city. We have several dozen homeless shelters that I respond to on a daily basis. The homeless that I encounter on a daily basis are people who don't know how to care for themselves. They want and expect handouts. These are people that want to be transported to a hospital by ambulance because they want a warm bed and a sandwich.
      When I was little I was taught the famous saying "give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime". We have become a society where we give people things for our own selfish reasons - because it makes us feel good. If you really gave a damn about the homeless then you would be helping them by teaching them and providing them resources so they can get off their feet. Those, like I see, that have no want or desire to be productive members of society shouldn't receive anything.
      Maybe before you judge others John, you should walk in their shoes. Maybe you should come walk in my shoes and see what I see. Because in my experience, very little of the homeless population in my area has any desire whatsoever to become productive members. Providing handouts is not helping anyone other than to fill your own selfish desires of self-gratification (which is a sin btw as is judging others - and you claim to be a Christian. Better re-read the Bible).

      I have worked with different organizations that strive to help others become less dependent on "hand outs". There is a problem with many people having an entitled attitude/belief that some one else needs to take care of them ("It's not my fault" seems to be an underlying thought process. However, many of the people I worked with still want to be productive when and if they can. Mike L. stated "...then tasked the residents with specific responsibilities...". This gives the residents the necessary motivation to help themselves to be part of a community. When people have the feeling of ownership, they tend to take care of the things they have with more care than those things that are just given to them.

    • @JayNohh
      @JayNohh 7 лет назад +4

      +John Texas I think Mike has a well-balanced approach to it. And I'm not saying this is you, but I've found out even more from a certain pocket on RUclips anyways that just because someone claims they are Christian, doesn't mean they are right about everything (or truly a Christian for that matter). And it's like how it could be debatable of who's got the "Christian" perspective in terms of two sides debating over illegal immigration for example. Showing love and compassion to all may not always mean going about something in any way that doesn't work on a societal level, or only demoralizes the person you are "helping". Some people need help or support for the rest of their lives, others don't. That being said, I understand being homeless because of unfortunate circumstances is a different thing than well-fare fraud

    You might want to review “bubble insulation” very light weight and efficient. Great job, if I was on the street this would be awesome!!!

    The vicar could sleep in it while about 200 homeless could sleep in the church on the cushioned pews .... Keep up the good work Paul ...

      I agree. With all these MEGA Churches imagine how many shelters can be built. I know, I know some religious yahoo will say, "We have the right to use our donations to build our empires", but truly, What would Jesus do???

    Well done. Thinking of others. There is a bloke in the UK who turns shipping containers into homes for homeless. Great bloke too.

    That is awesome, I'm sure a homeless person would love it. I was homeless at one time. I would have slept in a dog house. Great idea, love it.

    This is brilliant! Thank you Paul for sharing your idea. I’m going to take this to my local council office tomorrow and talk to them about the possibility of making some of these and I’m up for fundraising. Families may not sleep together but they’ll be right next to each other and they’ll be safe and dry and warmer. Thank you again
