    Procrastination? Today, I was supposed to write some results about my experiments. Instead, I went outside for a walk and came across a protest. I took out my phone and started interviewing people, asking them what they were protesting for. Then I recorded myself analyzing the protest, edited the video, and sent it to RUclips channels to promote it. Of course, I spent the whole day on that. I had never done that before. I am studying for a master's degree in engineering, and I think I probably just didn't want to write :C

      That happened to me too when I was writing my dissertation. My house never stayed so cleaned nor my cat so entretained.

    Thank you for this. I'm a month into my first semester of a PhD and have definitely been feeling overwhelmed.

    Loved your words on this topic! Can you please make a video on how to survive through rough days in research? When nothing works even when you are doing literally everything to make it work.

    Maybe I'm going to start growing my beards to plan how to brush them 5 hours daily.

    Reading papers is a must. Be very selective though.

    I had 5 manuscripts in my PhD thesis within 3 years. Actually, I needed only 3 manuscripts for graduation. One of the paper, I sent to Nature communications when I submitted my PhD thesis. My supervisor said to me that you are the most productive student in my lab over 30 years of his career. It is true that I only focused on those three things you mention in the beginning of my PhD. I run multiple projects at the same time and only focused on getting and analyzing results throughout my PhD.

      @Someonefromearth123 Was your PhD. by published work?

    • @Someonefromearth123
      @Someonefromearth123 Месяц назад +2

      @@fortuneallIt was not based on published work, but one of the three papers must be either submitted to a journal or published before you submit your PhD thesis. If you have also one good paper published in a very good journal such as PNAS, Nature communication or other reputable journals, you can also graduate from PhD without having three manuscripts. In my field, it will at least take 4-5 years to publish an article in a very good journal.

    4:25 "Measuring how many graphs you can produce a month". Great, that sounds fun! I wonder if I can make an automated dashboard that refreshes every time I make a new graph, so I can track in real-time how many graphs I can do a month by visiting this website.... 10 hours of unproductive coding later ... sh*t. Something didn't quite work out here...

    Dr. Stapleton, what advice do you have for someone that thinks they have to read all the literature [gray and peer-reviewed & published wherher Q1, Q2, etc] on a topic? The person enjoys it yet it is a distraction for them. And they can seem to be able to help themselves as it is somewhat "enjoyable".

    • @rayyfire5738
      @rayyfire5738 Месяц назад +1

      if you like to consume the literature so much, why not be productive of your time and conduct a literature review? it would both encourage your reading and writing process and you can dedicate time blocks in your day to read and collect papers.

    Hi Andy,
    I'm an undergraduate studying AI in Vietnam, and I'm about to start some small research under the guidance of my professor. As I'm new to the field of research, could you please provide some advice on how to begin my journey? I would greatly appreciate any tips or guidance you can offer.
    Thank you!

    I've heard this 5 minute rule a lot. It does not work 6:21 After 10-15 minutes I'm bored again. What do you recommend?
