  • This is a remake of a video that originally went live in January 2021. What’s the deal with Kusabi Tetsugoro, and what does that tell us about The Silver Case’s messaging? Answering these type of questions led me to make this video. I hope you find it engaging. If you wish to point out some mistake or alternative reading, though, please be civil.

    This is a revised re-upload of a video I originally posted on 12 January 2021. I had various issues with the original, which you can read about on my website if you like: mackerelphones.com/2021/08/06/self-criticism-killing-the-past-with-kusabi-tetsugoro/
    It is my hope that this remake, while mostly identical, will not be as embarrassing as the original.

    This is the best analysis on The Silver Case, and probably on Suda's work as a whole, I've seen yet. Most videos tend to focus on the more absurdist aspect of Suda's work, ignoring the amount of detail and care that went into building these games' narratives and characters. Kusabi is an amazing character, and analysing his development throught the story to showcase the game's still relevant themes was genius. Thank you for making this fantastic video!

    This is a fantastic video! I especially enjoyed the research that went into the historical aspects that influenced the story elements - it's the kind of thing that is really easy to miss if you don't actually live in Japan, and understanding some of the inspirations for the story really puts a lot of it in a new perspective.

    I figured Suda51 would be a bit more...I dunno, manic? than he seemed in the interview footage. Considering the kind of games he makes he seems to just be a regular if slightly enthusiastic dude with an enthralling appreciation of the classics and a deep need to make things no one else has ever seen before.

    I'd have to disagree with what you said about sexist undertones, I wouldn't really say they're undertones and I wouldn't say that the game is painting them in a good light either, generally the 3 younger members of the HCU are seen to be as the most competent of the unit. I'm not saying that it's a great example but I would definitely say that the way hachisuka is treated isn't supposed to be viewed as understandable or okay. I've not got long into the video but I wanted to bring this up in case I forgot

      @shodanzinha Год назад +6

      Yeah, I feel the same. I'm a woman, in love with this game, and before I had even played it I was very surprised to see the sexism presented the way it was and...making sense, not inhibiting my appreciation unlike many many many(more like every-other) games. I was expecting something crude or lowbrow as the outlandish example he presented in No Mo Heroes and was left instead with a sense of "Ah, makes sense really, the game is obviously making clear these men sound ludicrous and shitty, and the few female characters present are amazing"(least to me. I could easily say my most favourite character other than Sumio is Ayame).

      By the way, according to Suda in a few interviews in 2013 and 2014, he didn't have a hand in Killer is Dead's dating sim shit; his vision of Gigolo Mode was a lot different and not fan-servicey sexualized shit, but he was pressured into it by the producers Yoshimi Yasuda and Hideyuki Shin. I think when people look at the examples of distasteful things in a Suda51 game, they always tie it back to Grasshopper and Suda himself, but they never really research beyond that point or understand the different power dynamics at play, and I want to clear up that I do not have a big issue with sexual content in video games; this is a mature-rated game after all, but I feel like it does deviate from the main focus of Killer is Dead and is unnecessarily implemented in a way that makes it seem like pandering to a different audience. I suggest people watch Ghenry Perez's video on Killer is Dead; he talks about the development history and clears up some of the murky shit that happens in GH games.

    When it comes to older games like this you have to realize the time period it was made and have that mindset going in, you'll enjoy the game more. I was worried they were going to censor the more colorful language this game has and thank the stars they didn't change anything. I personally find it insulting to change the "problematic" dialog of any media, the writer obviously wanted a characters personality to be portrayed a certain way and removes or even ruins the personality of a character.
