I recall a couple in New York for their 2 day honeymoon, robbed in the 70s, subsequently showered with gifts. A shy honeymoon couple, Jerry and Darlene Jenkins from Burlington, Vermont, on about 12/5/77 had their car stolen at gunpoint, the perp drove the car down a W. 42nd St sidewalk, killing one man and injuring 14 others. The NYT article 12/9/1977 mentions key items the City donated to the couple: Mayor honored them at City Hall with a silver plate, NY Hilton paid for their hotel room for a week, free Windows on the World restaurant meal, a Doberman Pinscher, full set of China, Broadway show "I Love My Wife", free NY Jets game 12/11/77 compliments of the telephone company. City and peoples names changed, many details match though! Mr. Jenkins said, "I want to go back to Vermont where all the quiet people are", and added, "I want to go back to Burlington and look at three feet of snow instead of cameras." Mrs. Jenkins said, "I was surprised because you just don't steal a car in Vermont if somebody's sitting in it. In Vermont you wait until everybody's asleep." Her husband agreed, "Then you usually just take the CB radio."
The youth charged with homicide and the 14 assaults was a 19 year old Harvey Collins, living on Madison Avenue, was confined to Bellevue Hospital for court-ordered psychiatric tests. A murderous sidewalk joy ride terrorized Mrs. Jenkins, mowed down and killed one 70 year old man, critically injured a 16 year old, with 6 still hospitalized as of the date of the article. I hope they threw the book at him.

Thanks for that info; I was actually about to post a comment saying I was skeptical about the 'true story" allegation. You saved me from showing myself up as a cynical jerk!

E.G. says they won`t say the place where this happen but...….BARREL POINT is in ONTARIO close to MORRIS POINT and JEWELL BAY near by WHITE BAY and FRYING PAN HARBOUR which is situated in SANS SOUCI, that should be close enough for governmemt work :)))))))

I vaguely recall a honeymoon couple being robbed in NYC in the 70s, subsequently showered with gifts. A shy honeymoon couple, Jerry and Darlene Jenkins from Burlington, Vermont, on about 12/7/1977 had their car stolen at gunpoint, the perp drove the car down a W. 42nd St sidewalk, killing one man and injuring 14 others. The NYT 12/9/1977 article mentions key items the City donated to the couple: Mayor honored them at City Hall with a silver plate, NY Hilton paid for their hotel room, free Windows on the World restaurant meal, a Doberman Pinscher, full set of China, Broadway show "I Love My Wife", free NY Jets game compliments of the telephone company. Details match many in this story here.

Lame! Mystery Theatre is so much better at being scary than being funny.
