Well they were huge here in Canada; as Fil mentions at the end of the video they had a string of Gold and Platinum albums in Canada and some success in the States as well. There was an explosion of interesting bands in Canada in the 70's in large part due to the government bringing in the Cancon regulations in 1971 that said radio stations had to play a certain percentage (25% in the 70's) of Canadian music. Before then Radio was dominated in Canada by American and British music. The first album of theirs I bought was "On Record" in 1972. I pretty much bought every album and single they released through the 70's after that. Saw them live 3 times in the 70's on the "Electric Jewels", "Stand Back" and "Whole Worlds Goin' Crazy" tours when they were at their peak. They were a great live band. By the way they did get noticed in the States in the 70's opening on tours for The Rolling Stones and Styx among others.
Chewy Ltd I was an American teenager living in Canada (Dad’s job) when they were popular there. When we moved back to the states, they were not on the radio much at all.
I live in Toronto for a short time in the early 70's. I saw them open for several "name" bands. I remember they were really loud and really tight a d always the best band on the stage!
I'll say it again, UNDERRATED by whom? Nobody who ever HEARD April Wine "under" rated them. They just plain rock. I live in a small town with two railroad crossings. I think the RR engineers are geniuses of torture - they have the "ding ding" set to OOOWATANITE. Every time a train comes through I break into song!
Thank you for this. As a Canadian, I've always been really proud of our musical talent. We really went through an extra special time during the 70s and 80s with Rush, Triumph, April Wine, Chilliwack, Fludd, BTO, Max Webster, Harlequin just to name a few. Myles Goodwyn was so prolific as a song writer. His music has been a part of the soundtrack of my life since I was a little kid. Sadly we lost him a few days ago, but his music will always live on.
I had heard of April Wine but only got into them recently (for some reason late 70's early 80's rock was a blind spot for me save Motorhead). Really this entire lineup blows me away. They are so tight you would think they had been in this lineup for years. I agree that he is criminally obscure when taking into account how amazing his drumming is and how well remember his solos live were by people who seen them.
I don't recall the exact year, early-mid 90s, April Wine was playing a show in Calgary. They were staying at a hotel where I was a server in a restaurant. Jerry was dining with some other people, not bad members as I recall. I wasn't looking after them but passed by occasionally and what I remember was Jerry griping about the accolades that Neil Peart received. 😆
They were an amazing band. Sadly we lost Myles a few days ago, but his talent will live on in the music. He had an incredible voice and wrote so many awesome songs . R.I.P. Myles .... you're missed already. Thanks for all the memories.
Wow when I heard that Myles Goodwin had passed I came on here and wanted to hear you talk about their fabulous music that I fell in love with at the age of 16 years old. I got to see them live in my country of Canada in Kamloops, BC when I was 17. I was fortunate and am feeling the loss and thanks for having a great run down of this band!! RIP Myles Goodwin and I know the bass player had passed too. I'm going to check out your playing now!! 💗
Hey FIL, sad day here in Nova Scotia, Myles goodwyn died Sunday December 4/2023, AprilWine made a lot of good albums, and Myles wrote almost all of the songs, thankyou for putting them on your Amazing site,
Miles Goodwyn just passed away at 75. RIP and thanks for all the great music. I saw them live in Truro Nova Scotia back in the early 70s before they got big. Good times!!
RIP Myles. All of Dartmouth Nova Scotia and the world misses you! I have seen these guys live more times than I can count and so lucky to be raised in the 70's & 80's. The last time was the mid 90's at a Parle Beach festival with Def Leppard as the headliner.
I lived in Dartmouth Nova Scotia where Myles Goodwyn came from (waverly) but that is just outside of Dartmouth, and I had the privilege to see the band live in a local pub back many many years ago, and I mean many years ago, then caught a performance at our local forum. The cool thing about Myles is when he should have been listening in the classroom he was was pounding off lyrics. He was a great guy. The last time I saw him play was in another pub in Dartmouth in around 1991 (I could be wrong on that date, I had a few too many). Me, and a few of my friends knew every song April Wine recorded, and he got a kick out of us while we sang right along with him through most of the songs. Well the best we could while taking swigs of our beer. The amusing thing about it all is that he was smiling from ear to ear because he got a kick out of watching us follow right along. Great times.
April Wine's song 'Roller' is absolutely awesome. 3-part guitar harmonies, driving bass and great drums! You can find it on RUclips. April Wine is still going and kicks ass!
You finally found April Wine ! one of our best bands of the 70s and 80s. Myles is one of our great voices and song writers of all time. They have so many brilliant albums and gave amazing live shows for many years. They are still playing live shows today on a much smaller scale but the songs live on with so much power and grace. April Wine - I Like To Rock !
Saw Myles Goodwyn in a songwriter’s setting with Dan Hill a couple of months. Just 2 guys on stage playing acoustic guitars, sharing life stories and their songs. Goodwyn just got into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.
I love that in 2022 you can go on RUclips and hear a British bloke talk about a Canadian band from the 1970's! I always thought April Wine was a bit of a "best kept secret". Looks like the secret's out. Thanks for the video.
I saw them last year in Saskatoon at the annual Exhibition/Fair. Funny thing is, I wouldn’t have gone if it was not for the insistence of my son who was only 11 at the time! No Ferris wheel, no games, he just wanted to see them live! We stood front row, right in front of Brian Greenway, we were not disappointed, glad my son has good taste in rock!
You never fail to bring us the best Fil! Was fortunate to see April Wine early in the 1980's at the Philadelphia Spectrum. A very underrated band for certain! Thank you Fil!
Thanks for this review. Myles Goodwyn retired a few months ago, but the band plays on and I saw their concert last night (June 14) in Victoria, British Columbia. In the 1970s and into the 1980s, Canadian radio gave April Wine a lot of airplay, and as you note, they had several huge hits in the U.S. as well, both singles and albums. In 1980 at the age of 16, I was planning to see them but there was a heavy police presence at the show, and I could see the cops were frisking each person on admission. I was in possesion of, uh...something that would have landed me in jail at that time, so I didn't go in. In those days, tickets were bought at the gate on the night of the concert, so I wasn't out of pocket. A mere 43 years later, I finally saw them live. As a Canadian growing up in the 70s and early 80s, April Wine was a big part of the soundtrack of my adolescence and early adult life, which made last night's concert a special event. Thanks again for this review of a great concert in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
One of my favorite Canadian bands. Along side Triumph. *Sign Of The Gypsy Queen* is also probably my favorite track from them, tied with *Roller...* Very underrated band. Having three guitarists, plus their bassist, they were a rarity. I hear they are still touring. Would love to see them live...🎶🎸🍷
Yes ma'am, I will second your Canadian bands plug. I am a '60s - '70s rocker but those bands could hang with anybody. Having spent a lot of time in and with a local band(s) I always wanted to give Ric and Triumph a double high five for getting as much (or maybe more) full sound from a three piece band as ZZ Top ever did. And Triumph did not attempt to use full cranked distortion to mask the dead spots that are so hard to avoid with three pieces.
This was the first record I bought with my own money when i was like 12. Their version of 21st Century Schizoid Man is killer. Great Canadian band! I appreciate your research here man. I didn't even know some of this stuff and I'm a fan since I was kid.
About time..I love April Wine..they were supposed to play Arrowhead stadium in '82 with Uncle Ted..they cancelled..Triumph took their place..thanks Fil .
Every member of this band were coke heads. They even had a stipulation in their contract: “No blow, no show”. Myles Goodwyn eventually became diabetic because of the lifestyle. I’m very happy for him that he was able to overcome his drug issues. April Wine is actually playing North Vancouver very soon at Ambleside Park. Will I attend? Doubtful. Can’t afford it.
Good band to see live, I think, it was 1981 when I saw them on stage. A memorable concert !!! Great April Wine video, Fil, and I agree that a live tone is best, that's what it's all about. Rock !! 👍👍
One of the most overlooked musical talents. I loved April Wine. Do yourself a favor and sample the rest of their music. I think you’ll be impressed. They’re a very talented band.
Good Lord, I have seen them every me I could, First time was Riverfront in Cincinnati, I think 1978 with Styx, The last time was a placed called JAXX in Springfield, VA I think 2000. My girlfriend at the time had never heard of them but fell immediately in love with Jerry Mercer! most underrated drummer in Rock history in my humble opinion. My two favorite songs are still 'Love has remembered me" and "This Could be the Right One"
Thankyou for featuring this video! April Wine was a huge music influence for me! I saw them live many times. They always put on a fantastic show and the drummer was spellbounding! Loved your comments/reaction to the video! Please please do a David Cassidy video!
Such an underrated band! I was in 9th grade when Nature of the Beast was released...and it was huge in the Houston area! We seemed to appreciate bands that had been around for a while yet flew under the radar of most markets; Triumph, April Wine, Sammy Hagar, ZZ Top, etc.
Wonderful! April Wine is a favorite of my husband, I can’t wait to show him this. I had not heard of them until I met my husband in 1983. Your analysis is so informative and interesting! These guys are one of the best.
These guys were the very definition of guitar rock gods when I was a kid in the mid 70s. Saw them in concert a few times and they put on a great show. Even in an arena, the sound was huge and melodic, the staging was mind blowing.
Great Canadian hard rock! Memories of the first year on MTV, they played the hell out of this show!! I love their follow up record “Power Play” with the single “If you see Kaye” 😹🤘🏻
They were definitely a staple back in the day. Brings back memories of the young bar days chasing the girls. Have to ask because I'm not sure anymore, did you get my last two comments.
@@jamesgordonakacrazylegs8222You want Fil to analyses someone, I cant't remember whom? & I replies that I hope he does your pick! Plus! I'm not from Texas! Am I correct?😎✌

Ah! April Wine "The Nature of the Beast" I have that one on vinyl too, brother! They were a formidable group in this period. As you said, the three guitars and the great vocals made for some great rock and roll! 😃🤘✌
They have always been one of my favourite Canadian bands forever. I saw them back in 1980 for the first time (promoting Harder Faster album), then several times after that. Like many great Canadian bands, very underrated.
Fil, since 1980 when I visited Canada, I was under the impression that I was the only Brit who had ever heard of April Wine. Now I find there's two of us, let's keep it just between you and me. (See what I did there?)
Saw April Wine in Germany in late 82 I believe along with Jethro Tull Neil Young and a European group called Cheetah. April Wine blew them all away IMO.
Fantastic and very accurate analysis, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Other Canadians here have already said most of what I wanted to say. I first heard them in 1972,and several times after that. Seeing them up close in small clubs, and then later in larger venues was amazing. Myles has to be one of my favorite artists of all time. Glad you did this version, which is a great recording. Nice to hear you researched them so well too.💖
April Wine played at my high school in Montreal ‘round about ‘72 for Prom Dance. Saw them as well at Lafountaine Park for release of “Electric Jewels”. Long time fan. Myles Goodwin is still touring, after beating health issues and Mercer, the drummer, just retired a few years ago, playing for ‘Wine well into his ‘70’s. 🎸🎸🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I loved those guys back in the 80s. Bramalea Ontario 1979 - 1984! Woohoo! Wish I was old enough to see them open for the Stones at “the ElMo” in ‘77 but I did see them I think it was the summer of 1982 because I was 16 at the Canadian National Exhibition Grandstand. Awesome!
Very cool intro to this track. great analysis and rundown on the band and what it mean to listen to a live performance. thanks for April Wine. keep Rockin' through the years Fil.
Seems like all the bar bands back in the day played the hell out of April Wine. So that means they got Crazy Legs moving more than once. Oh the good old days. Thanks for the smiles. Peace Boogie Woogie
I had heard of the band but have to admit I'm not familiar with them. This was very cool! Loved it Fil . Great analysis! I will listen to more of them now. \m/
april wine in my thinking is the greatest band canada ever put out, mick jagger of the rolling stones called them the next big super band, they had like 15 to 20 big hit songs in canada , they were just never managed right and never really made it in the states although they did have a couple of hits there, went to see them couple of years ago and they are still an awesome band miles sounds just the same
debbie basile, hey there Debbie here is a few to check out. I Like to Rock, Fast Train, Oowatanite and Don’t Push Me Around (Live from El Macambo) hope you enjoy
Just a great, extensive, well-informed analysis of one of our great bands. The history is accurate. The musical assessment is bang on. Tipping my hat to the enthusiasm and informed assessment. Just brilz.
Great breakdown Fil. April Wine was my first concert they opened for the Beach boys and Steve Miller. The Nature of the beast is a great album especially "big city girls". First Glance is my favorite though. " Hot on the wheels of love". Myles really show his range on Roller in the opening. Also that double lead is only second to Thin Lizzy's. Canada put out some great bands back then, can't forget Triumph and Rush. That's when you could see two great bands under $10🤟
April Wine was a very successful touring rock band here in Canada during the 1970s & 80s. If you're in the USA or UK, check out every single album that they made as they are all very well produced, quality classic rock!
Honestly they are watching us. Same thing in the car one day. Sabbath was on the radio and I opened my you tube app BOOM same song in my reommends-and it was Heaven and Hell. Makes me not want to trust technology anymore.
Thanks for covering April Wine. Myles Goodwyn lives not far from me & plays locally from time to time. He is a terrific talent with song writing & guitar playing.
Thx for this! April Wine have been huge here at home in Canada forever. My favourite album is "Stand Back" from about 1975. Saw them live in '76 when I was only 15 yrs. old. Ha! A (then unknown) band named... Heart opened for them. Blown away by both bands. Will never forget it. 😊
My all time fav. April Wine song...haven't seen this live version before...still amazing. Thanx Fil. Great breakdown..brought me me back to my youth... 👍👍
Saw them open for Rush in 1979 with front row seats thanks to a popular radio DJ at the time who thought me & my friends were cute, lol. What an experience seeing both those bands that night-they were both GREAT.
I have known the band for decades now. You are spot on Fil they were Fabulous live :) I have seen them 12 times and loved it every time, thanks for this piece.
The Classic Rock is so damn cool! I not only love the great music. April Wine is an excellent band. I also love the long haired guys. What a mix! Those long haired boys could get you in trouble. I'm the 67 year old, and I still have a crush on Fil! ❤️😍❤️
Wow, l forgot all about this band!! I loved them back in the day! You are always bringing me new talent and re introducing me to one that l haven't heard in years! Thanks for the analysis Fil! There was a lot of 3 guitar bands in the 70s. Love guitar duels and duets with harmonies!
April Wine played my high school in the early 70s. They had recently released their first single and were just becoming popular in Canada. Fast forward 10 years and I saw them at the Montreal Forum at the "homecoming concert" after a long North American tour. 20,000 of us were treated to what may have been the best concert I ever saw. They were a great live band. When Jerry Mercer started banging a big red fire alarm bell behind his kit during the second encore, we knew it was for Oowatanite and the place erupted. Great band. Great LIVE band. Thanks for resurrecting wonderful memories!
RIP Myles Goodwin. Thanks for making this video and showing respect to a great Canadian band.

Probably the best break down of April Wine I've ever heard, and I've been a Wineo for 50 years now. Thank you.
Saw this tour and the previous two tours for First Glance and Harder Faster. Amazing live shows. Glad I grew up back when rock and roll still ruled.
They were huge with the Nature of the Beast and then they went a bit too pop and they faded fast.
April Wine with Prism
1981 Prince George Coliseum .....
My 1st Concert with Big Sis, Barb ❤
April Wine. Just a great super talented band. Love their music. Jerry Mercer rocks big time.
I miss my MTV, now it's all reality TV! The only show I like on there now is Ridiculousness.
They were definitely a staple back in the day. Brings back memories of the young bar days chasing the girls. Have to ask because I'm not sure anymore, did you get my last two comments.
@@bekind6763 I'll second that
@@jamesgordonakacrazylegs8222You want Fil to analyses someone, I cant't remember whom? & I replies that I hope he does your pick! Plus! I'm not from Texas! Am I correct?😎✌
@@bekind6763 when it came to thinking you were from Texas. Did we converse one time and you said you hadn't been any further east than Texas if so maybe that's where it came from. No one in particular right now I'm pushing the professor to do. Chris Stapleton was one I requested a lot. I think if I'm going to push anything right now it's going to be more Chris Stapleton and Gov't mule. Are you hip with Dr K or Terry miles on YT. there a cool little pick me up during the day. Peace Boogie Woogie Kathy
Nice, Fil! This band was one of my introductions to rock music when I was a kid. I still listen to them now!
I seen this concert but in Kamloops B.C, Canada. Was my first concert and it rocks today just as much as it did back then. Love this band!!
Ah! April Wine "The Nature of the Beast" I have that one on vinyl too, brother! They were a formidable group in this period. As you said, the three guitars and the great vocals made for some great rock and roll! 😃🤘✌
I still have an 8 track! My mom had it in her Grand Prix that i used to "steal" when she wasnt home and go joy riding at 14 lol. I'm 52
Great album. Heavy rotation in San Antonio, TX
@@mitakuyeoyasin2320 Lol Did your mom ever find out?
@@mistermusic140 yuuuuup. Got it stuck in a field with about 10 people in it, people = kids LOL. Great times!!!
@@mitakuyeoyasin2320 Hahahahahahaha
They have always been one of my favourite Canadian bands forever. I saw them back in 1980 for the first time (promoting Harder Faster album), then several times after that. Like many great Canadian bands, very underrated.
Fil, since 1980 when I visited Canada, I was under the impression that I was the only Brit who had ever heard of April Wine. Now I find there's two of us, let's keep it just between you and me. (See what I did there?)
Saw April Wine in Germany in late 82 I believe along with Jethro Tull Neil Young and a European group called Cheetah. April Wine blew them all away IMO.
Just Between You And Me is another of my frequently played downloads. One of my favorites! Thanks, Fil, for a great one❣️
Cool!
Thank you . Great analyses on Canada's hardest working and one our best bands. Kudos to you .
Seems like all the bar bands back in the day played the hell out of April Wine. So that means they got Crazy Legs moving more than once. Oh the good old days. Thanks for the smiles. Peace Boogie Woogie
I was a jr in high school. This was a homecoming song as I remember. Thanks for reviewing this band. 👍🏼🇺🇸
One of the few good things about being older is to have seen this band at least 3 times live. Always a good show!
Highly underrated band. High roller is another amazing tune.
I had heard of the band but have to admit I'm not familiar with them. This was very cool! Loved it Fil . Great analysis! I will listen to more of them now. \m/
april wine in my thinking is the greatest band canada ever put out, mick jagger of the rolling stones called them the next big super band, they had like 15 to 20 big hit songs in canada , they were just never managed right and never really made it in the states although they did have a couple of hits there, went to see them couple of years ago and they are still an awesome band miles sounds just the same
brian hill, they just didn’t sellout to the mainstream music industry
debbie basile, hey there Debbie here is a few to check out. I Like to Rock, Fast Train, Oowatanite and Don’t Push Me Around (Live from El Macambo) hope you enjoy
I liked them much more then Rush who were another top Canadian band at the time
Nature of the Beast..great album
This was my favourite line up
Just a great, extensive, well-informed analysis of one of our great bands. The history is accurate. The musical assessment is bang on. Tipping my hat to the enthusiasm and informed assessment. Just brilz.
Thanks!
That's when you could see two great bands under $10🤟
Saw them in Denver in 1982 on this tour.. Eddie Money opened and did a great set. These guys came out and just killed it. Amazing show💜
Great performance---cool intro on the guitar, love those kind pf echo tricks.
I have no idea how I missed this one...April Wine has always been one of my favorites..
Hope you're doing well Fill..
Thanks!
April Wine was a very successful touring rock band here in Canada during the 1970s & 80s. If you're in the USA or UK, check out every single album that they made as they are all very well produced, quality classic rock!
Rockin as usual Fil!
I used to love their music. They were a wonderful group and very talented musicians. Great to hear them again. Thank you!
Weird I just put on my Nature Of The Beast album and this vid pops up.
Cool!
Honestly they are watching us. Same thing in the car one day. Sabbath was on the radio and I opened my you tube app BOOM same song in my reommends-and it was Heaven and Hell. Makes me not want to trust technology anymore.
Brilliant .. more April Wine ... arrived here by following the link Myles Goodwin shared on his FB .. now a subscriber ..
Such a great band... musically and vocally ...great guitar tone ....thx Fil 👍
Thanks for covering April Wine. Myles Goodwyn lives not far from me & plays locally from time to time. He is a terrific talent with song writing & guitar playing.
Saw them a year ago November, they blew the room away
Thx for this! April Wine have been huge here at home in Canada forever. My favourite album is "Stand Back" from about 1975. Saw them live in '76 when I was only 15 yrs. old. Ha! A (then unknown) band named... Heart opened for them. Blown away by both bands. Will never forget it. 😊
My all time fav. April Wine song...haven't seen this live version before...still amazing. Thanx Fil. Great breakdown..brought me me back to my youth... 👍👍
Great song , great live sound. Love the twin leads. Saw them open for STYX, Great show
Love April Wine. Saw them in concert around this time. They rocked!
Saw them open for Rush in 1979 with front row seats thanks to a popular radio DJ at the time who thought me & my friends were cute, lol. What an experience seeing both those bands that night-they were both GREAT.
Great live band
Don't you just love the older humbucker tone?
I have known the band for decades now. You are spot on Fil they were Fabulous live :) I have seen them 12 times and loved it every time, thanks for this piece.
The Classic Rock is so damn cool! I not only love the great music. April Wine is an excellent band. I also love the long haired guys. What a mix! Those long haired boys could get you in trouble. I'm the 67 year old, and I still have a crush on Fil! ❤️😍❤️
Patricia Barkley Steady Pat, steady ;)
