This is absolutely underrated, the fourth movement especially
This feels like a work of epic tragic proportions. It corresponds to the style of Schubert for me in his 4th symphony with his anguished part writing. It is a work of unparalleled genius of a time where France suffered the worst idenity crisis.
Have just listened to Mehul's 1st & 2nd symphonies for the first time on youtube.
Thanks for giving us these melodic gems !
Magnificent work by a composer who showed as much promise as the young Beethoven. While it would be very appropriate to refer to the influence of Haydn here - same could be said of the young Beethoven - there is nevertheless something Gallic that stands out in the background. I am thrilled to have discovered this composer albeit in my middle years. Kudos to the Gulbenkian Foundation and Maestro Michel Swierczewski.
Wow I'm blow away. How could I have never heard of this composer??? Such an underrated piece.
Many people mention comparisons between the finale of this work and the opening movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony, but the work that this reminded me of as soon as I heard it was the opening movement of Mozart's 40th Symphony (also in G-minor).
THAT 4th Movement is SO Good.
I - Allegro
II - Andante (7:52)
III - Menuet: Allegro moderato (16:07)
IV - Allegro agitato (19:27)
Thanks
Thank u
The final movement is incredible.
gymnassfan sounds like rossini
It seems to be the source of the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, indeed.
I agree with you 100%, it's fantastic!!
@@HenkVeenstra666 Rossini? Sei sicuro?
Rather long winded and never quite hits the mark.
The french symphonic school at the turn of XIX° century with names such as Gossec and Méhul is very underrated, including here in France. I never heard a single symphony from these times in a concert hall. .The main influence was Haydn, who was very popular in France. Up to the revolution, we had the "Concert spirituel", where people could listen to foreign music. The french Conservatory started in 1795.
Gérard, I agree with you.
Please note that in English "french" should be written as "French".
Thank you very much !
I suggest to not neglect Cherubini's influence.
People, above all many of your countrymen, Monsieur Begni, prefer to live under the likes of a Macron, Obama, May, Juncker, or a Merkel and do not wish to acknowledge the likes of Napoleon, and that rubs off on Mehul. The nationalist and martial spirit of Mehul glares at you, and that frightens socialists and globalists.

This is a wonderful performance of a Germanic Strurm und Drang influenced French symphony (influenced no doubt by Haydn as Gerard Begni aptly noted) by the sadly underrated Gulbenkian Foundation Orchestra of Lisbon with its excellent conductor.
This symphony's Allegro seems to be a condensed Viotti! Just listen to Viotti's violin concertos no. 19, 22, 23.
@@stefanstamenic3640 - Can you only write one sentence? Just shut up ffs. If you don't like Mehul just stop listening to him. It really is THAT easy.
Méhul was listened with great attention by Beethoven in the Theater An Der Wien and influenced in some way the works of this one, at least until the first version of the Fidélio (Leonor).
And Beethoven had this in mind when he wrote his Fifth Symphony.
If you listen carefully to the fourth movement, you will find many similarities with the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth. And it took less than a year between Beethoven's and Méhul's symphonies.
This symphony's Allegro seems to be a condensed Viotti! Just listen to Viotti's violin concertos no. 19, 22, 23.
I did. They are wonderful
Leider zu wenig bekannt, sehr eindrucksvoll!
Quelle musique incroyable...

Merci infiniment.
I agree but i think this is very universal problem of classical music, standard repertoire predominates sometimes too much....we have the same problem in Poland, we are only now starting to rediscover Polish gems like compositions of Józef Elsner the teacher of Chopin.

The fourth movement of this song is very similar to Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 first movement. The year when this song was composed is the same as the year when Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 was composed. I wonder very much.
Etsuo K, I don't wonder, I think Ludwig heard this movement!
this would be confused for Mozart in a blind listening test. Underrated
very elegant and passionate music. But Mozart's creativity is very far! And the skill of Haydn in developing the musical plot as well! He could have originated the inspiration from the ouverture of Le Stagioni of Haydn.
I agree.
Nonsense. After three bars one with educated ears is well aware it is NOT Mozart. What one could suppose is Cherubini.
@@ludhannsebastivanbachthove4987 - Yeah, lets all stick to the rules 'cos that's what all the great composers did. Right? Right? Oh no, they didn't did they.

Mediocre, no wonder this composer is long forgotten.
