  • Hey, you're finally awake, you were trying to cross the border, right?
    The Elder Scrolls is one of the most successful fantasy franchise of all time so, how good is the MMO, and is it worth playing?
    Basically, yes, it's one of the greatest MMO's ever made and if you can ignore the somewhat floaty combat, it's one hell of a good adventure.
    Play it, N'wah.

    One HUGE draw to ESO that I don't recall you mentioning is that any player can adventure with any player at any level. That is by far the biggest reason my friends and I still play. Everything scales to your level and you don't have to wait to level with friends or family that can't play as much. Or, as in my case, I'm the one that can't play nearly as much as my friends.

    This game allows for some pretty funky builds. I fondly remember my magica nightblade tank, who was sustained by blood magic and the shadows and could solo most world bosses at a snail's pace but assured survivability. There were definitely some elitists who would take one look at the tank using a staff and initiate a kick. But the majority that stuck around enjoyed solid tanking, and even some off heals from the tank during chaotic moments.

      @@sportschool3537 Dunno man the only game on that list I actually prefer over ESO when it comes to combat is Guild Wars 2. And I guess BDO but that's literally 100% because of it's special effects and 0% because of actual gameplay. ESO has some floaty animations, yes, but the combat just rocks when it comes to what you can do with it - Especially in endgame, imo. The actual gameplay is better. And besides the floaty animations really aren't so bad, and they only really affect melee. Every decent ESO player plays with a ton of animation cancelling anyways so I don't even notice.
      Edit, tho: I really really hate tab-targeting so that might be why I disagree. I prefer ESO's more fast paced, 'skill-based' combat, where I gotta think fast and manage my resources aswell as synergize properly with my friends. I just cannot ever return to a game like WoW after that, where I remember my gameplay pretty much just being setting a macro that autocasts my series of spells for me as I couldn't be arsed to do that number dance at some point.

    The part about the classes really hits home.
    My first character was a Breton sorceror and the first 200 hours or so were really enjoyable. Just running around adventuring and figuring stuff out, exploring the world.
    Then I started to get into dungeons and harder PvE content, and I made my sorceror became a dedicated healer. Some people were questioning why I picked a sorceror instead of templar. When I looked at the difference in class abilities it became clear that templars were meant to be a healing class because they had all the healing options but sorcerors were not. In cases like this, your chosen class does make a pretty big difference.
    I didn't let that stop me though, I'd just have to do my best with what I had.
    In the end, I played with several guilds and progressed to clearing veteran trials, though vMoL was a struggle and our guild never got around to trying vHoF. At that point I had other commitments in life and stopped playing actively, but I was glad to have dragged my sad excuse of a sorc healer as far as I did.
    Looking back now, if the classes were any less well-designed, that would not have been possible.

      @@jesquesan A lot of people get overwhelmed by the games sheer size. But I personally view that as a strength. The game is pretty much designed for you NOT to be able to do all of everything intentionally. They really went for making it feel like a true living world, as much as I love the other elder scrolls games once you do 70%+ of the important stuff the games get boring with very little content. This isn’t the case in ESO, it’s practically impossible to be a completionist in this game. Because it’s one of the games that are closer to being an actual living world. Once you do the same amount of stuff that makes up the other TES games, you aren’t a 70%, you’re *barely at 30% at best.* Thats what I love about this game, *I know for a fact* that I’ll never be able to truly finish and do everything that I possibly could. Just like in real life. There will always be a new series of adventures to come back to after I set the game down for a few months and take a long break.

    After watching your video about meta and how it ruins MMORPGs I can't help but notice you didn't mention that in this video. ESO is a great game but the meta in the game is a complete brick wall for anyone who wants to have a creative build.
    As some context I will be referring to Veteran Dungeons. The issue I have is that while ESO encourages creative builds (It is an Elder Scrolls game after all) the meta in the game will cock block you unless you can do decent DPS.
    There have been times where I am doing subpar or barely average DPS in a Veteran Dungeon and people will just leave the group because I am not doing enough DPS. Is it my fault for not picking the right morphs for my skills or for not placing my attribute and champion points correctly? Is it their fault for being impatient? Is it the game's fault?
    You could just say, "Well don't do Veteran Rank Dungeons then.". If that hypothetical response were to be tossed my way the only answer I could possible give is that I should not be barred from enjoying Veteran Dungeons simply because my build, champion points or attribute points are not placed right or not morphed right.
    Now I will concede that if I were to take time and refine my builds then I would be able to do good DPS. I personally think that if you refine any build well enough then anyone can do good DPS. Refining a build takes time and resources. Things like armor, weapons, enchantments, jewelry etc. Given enough time I could refine my build and make it great but I get most of my good gear from Veteran Dungeons. So I'm sure you see the problem I have here.

    • @MyouKyuubi

      You need veteran gear and resources, to perfect your build, but you can't perfect your build, because nobody wants to do veteran dungeons with you... It's basically like, you need to open the door, but you need the key to unlock the door, and the key to unlock the door, is on the other side of the door you need to unlock.
      You're stuck, and can't get anywhere. : /
      I getcha, i was stuck like that in GW2, i needed full Viper's set to start raiding, but i needed to raid, to get a full Viper's set... Ironically, that is what made me stop playing GW2. : /
      Shitty meta gatekeeper elitists kept me from enjoying the game. :S

      Sorry, but you can't make something challenging (like vet dungeons) and then have healer-tank-dps hybrids with very poor skill choices be good enough. The whole point of vet dungeons and trials is that they're the most difficult content in the game.
      You can have multiple characters so you can do what many people do and have a PvE character, PvP character and a meta PvP or meta PvE character, etc. Alternatively you can respec your current character to be more meta.
      In the end your complaint is ridiculous and it's an equivalent of playing a racing game, spending all the points/money on upgrading body and cosmetics of your car and then wondering why you can't win a race.
      The endgame is challenging, rise to the challenge.

You have to buy the latest Chapter DLC separately for RL money, and there are other things you must buy separately with crowns, such as Additional classes, races, skill lines, and the ability to join any alliance regardless of the race you choose for your character.

    2022 and it is still good and fun and endless and expansive as hell. Bought it last month, signed for plus yesterday and haven't been able to put it down since. It is SO GOOD! The customization is endless, the world is MASSIVE and an absolute blast to explore and walk around and you can just make whatever the hell you want in regards to classes and characters. I have a bit of a gripe with plus but i feel like it offers enough content in it that the price feels justified and yet feel completely optional!

    The necromancer tank is probably my favorite toon. There is no bad class. Trials are varied and challenging. The story is good and the dlcs are great at building on the base game. Really something for everyone.

    Big ol' rant incoming for anyone looking for a few negative aspects of ESO to help make the decision to play. Ive got some 1000+ hours in the game and Ive spent way too much time with it if im being honest.
    The biggest problem(s) with ESO in my opinion are that its almost TOO open ended until it isn't. When it comes to group content, and even personal power, the game doesn't allow you for much wiggle room. For high level end game content, unless you're fine with being an anchor to the group, you're almost forced into specific builds that suck a lot of player choice out. For example, my necromancer has give or take, 3 necromancer spells. The rest of my ability bars consist of either mages guild abilities that are slotted SPECIFICALLY for their "in slot" passive *glares at mage light*, or abilities from generic skill trees that required a TON of random grinding to even unlock. (lookin at you mages guild book hunt). Sure, I could shit-can the entire "build" and run whatever talents I prefer, live out my borderline edgelord dreams of summoning tons of skeletons and such that I had when I CHOSE the necromancer class. But that breaks the games stance on open ended character creation. Which in theory is fine, however a pretty significant percentage of the player base was given a tutorial by hellen keller, and doesnt understand the skills or their role in the content the person chooses to do. Is this the games fault? Yes. Is it also the players fault? Also yes. Is it also somehow Weird Al's fault? Sure, i'm sure we can make a connection somewhere. Regardless, the open ended character skill system is inherently broken due to JUST how open ended it is. I cannot count the number of times Ive had to leave LFG groups because my tank was a sorc with a resto staff, zero tank skills or abilities who queued as a tank for the fast queue time and then expected the healer to be able to handle healing him through that, multiple times only to type out enough slurs to make 4chan happy and then leave himself. Its a real problem. Am I going to bitch like this and not give a possible fix? No thats stupid, this is the internet obviously everything is thought out completely before its posted. *ehem* This could be easily fixed by adopting a much more WoW or FFXIV system to the classes. If you choose necromancer, you choose one of the 3 specs. One is a tank, one is a dps and one is healer. Those core abilities are what you use, with those abilities supplimented by a few other skill trees. We do not need a whole ass skill tree for the fighters guild, the mages guild, the psijic order, the cheese maker society ect. Just allow players to unlock some passives and maybe an ultimate or a single ability from those. Keep classes in their lane. I chose necromancer to play a necromancer, not a clone of the sorc next to me in riften except with some extra bones hangin around. The literal only difference between me and a random sorc hanging out, is LITERALLY probably 2 spells. Instead of an angry daedric triceratops, I summon skeletor's anorexic cousin. By choosing the tank spec, you are inately going to be able to tank with those abilities. No more ranger tanks trying to take a bosses punch to the face with a bow. Rain of arrows is not mitigation and thats a hill I will die on (and so will that archer tank tbh) trim the abilities and lock people to their classes. We chose them for a reason when we made our dark elf abominations.
    If youre someone who wants to play ESO for the stories, the quests, and maybe play with a few friends during that, then I can whole heartedly say that its a wonderful game for that, hell the dark brotherhood story alone has given me more fun than I can explain, the blade of Woe not even included because lets be honest, that thing is the most fun item in the game. However, the Trials, dungeons (vet level specifically) and end game content are a NIGHTMARE unless you happen upon a guild willing to bring you to those things, assuming you meet the criteria.
    Thank you for coming to my DedTalk. /RantOver

    • @topkekkk6084
      @topkekkk6084 3 года назад

      Amen to that. The veteran n vet hm trials basically throw player choice out the window.Going with the meta class/gear for each role is the bare minimum for the endgame. To be able to pull your own weight in endgame group content (especially as a dps or healer) u gotta know how to abuse the game's animation cancelling(weaving) else u won't do anywhere near the required damage to not get carried through content. And mastering animation cancelling is pure nightmare cuz of the usually bad ping on the servers. And the trial trifecta achievements will wanna make you cry lmao. Prolly one of the best games for casual players but if you really wanna go hardcore and do endgame stuff be prepared to sacrifice your soul :v

    This game always seemed, and despite your review, still does, like a watered down version of Skyrim and a not-quite-as good version of other MMOs. It combines the two yes, but each don't quite seem as deep as the more focused games. Especially when it released, other games seemed to provide the same type of content, only many were geared towards one of the two styles of play - solo, or multiplayer.
    You had Eve, Archeage, Rift, FF14, and some smaller ones that really focused on the MMO elements that you've come to know and expect in an MMO. Then you have the solo games like Skyrim, Fallout series, GTA series, Dark Souls, and several indie games.
    Maybe it's because I'm an older gamer in my mid 40's without friends playing online anymore. In an MMO, I want a social experience where you can be walking along and randomly find a group in need of your character (tank, healer, etc.) and be interactive with a random group of people you never played with before. A game where you can be a healer that gives out random buffs to complete strangers and newbies entering a dungeon, or a tank that jumps in and agrros a mob away from a low level player about to die.
    ESO along with too many others try to focus on a solo experience online where you have your set group of friends and never have to talk to a single person outside of that circle. It's awesome that you can customize everything in detail, but who' going to notice, or care? Everyone can do it, it's nothing new and you have nothing unique to bring or contribute to the game world overall. You might as well load up a few mods for Skyrim and settle into a gaming session offline at that point.

    • @draelos8570
      @draelos8570 3 года назад +1

      I'm still fairly new to ESO, but I'm confused as to what you're talking about when you say the multiplayer element is lacking. In what way? From what I've read there is good endgame multiplayer content in the forms of trials and veteran dungeons. Are you talking more about the social aspect of the game? I'm currently in a very friendly guild that was created to help out new players. The guild offers to help you learn the ropes of the game, and even hosts events such as raffles and hide and seek within the zones.
      I don't know, my experience with the game so far just doesn't line up with what you're describing it as.
      Side note: The best part of the souls games are the online elements. The online elements are the reason why all of the souls games still have substantial player-bases. Without invasions I guarantee you there would be hardly any long term players. You can only do challenge runs so many times.

    • @Crystalangra.official
      @Crystalangra.official 3 года назад +1

      lack of social aspect? my opinion is no, because as a PvP player in Cyrodil every individual need another indivual regardless the classes or even the level, to revive another players, give buffs to ur fellow alliance (even in different guild), together grouping with random players where the "party leader" tell the members about the tactics u are going to do in castles, it's deep actually. if u don't want to join group or guild in pvp cyrodil, then you can't do anything except waiting and hiding in the jungle for straying enemy player, or read the world alliance chat to know where everybody going/attacking, that way u can heal others (since u know where they are), ur fellow alliance players. and because cyrodill is very big map, u gonna need that XD
      but, you can do what you want like buffs other players heals etc in PVE too, usually in world bosses area, many random players from newbie to pro working and supporting each other to defeat the boss.

    As someone who played ESO for years at a competitive, score- and achievment-focused level I'm a bit biased with this game nowadays. I've played WoW (till mid WoD), SW:TOR (till it went free-2-p(l)ay), GW2 (every now and then), Neverwinter (occasionally), New World (for a month) and ESO so far and out of these MMOs I think the overall package ESO offers is the one that got me hooked the most. ESO for the most parts has content for all kinds of players to offer. For those enjoying a grind you can try to complete your item-collections, rank 50 in PvP or all of the achievements. For the more creative ones you can decorate one or multiple houses to a degree that you can't recognize the original house any further. If you are more the business type of player you can look around various guild traders located across the zones and try to grab some snatches to resell them for some profit in one of your up to 5 possible trading guilds. For casual players ESO has a lot to offer, and I mean something in the region of multiple hundreds of hours of stories you can experience. You can experience those quests either on your own or with a group of friends.
    The game itself however does a terrible job at explaining you certain things. I.e. its combat-mechanics, the priority system skill and abilities are based upon, is not explained at all. I.e. you can cancel animations of lower priority stuff by activating a higher priority stuff without losing the damage/buff of the lower-priority thing. The priority usually is like block/dodge roll > action bar skill > light/heavy attack. Most users will i.e. left click to trigger a light attack and when the animation starts, i.e. with a firestaff equiped the hand will go backwards slightly before going forward to fire off the fireball, you can skipp the whole animation by activating a skill when you have the correct timing or see that the hand is moving backwards. What happens is that the animation is canceled though the fireball from the light attack still fires and the skill you pressed will immediately be performed. This will basically produce 2 attacks at the same time, the light attack whose animation we've caneled + the damage the skill produces. As most buffs you can obtain as players stem from light attacks you not only deal more damage by weaving in light attacks in between your skills but you also grant yourself some additional buffs that further increase your damage. That is why correct light attack weaving/animation canceling is so important but the game itself doesn't explain that to you at all. While such a thing is not necessarily important if you just play the game to experience the quests solo, it is important when you want to dive into PvP or engame PvE (trials or DLC vet-hardmodes in dungeons).
    Though the reason why I am biased with this game, and that ultimately lead to a more than 2 years break, which I spent in WoW classic, is that Zenimax Online Studios (ZOS) has some ongoing performance issues with their servers. Over the years performance got worse and worse especially if you are into large-scale, open world PvP and trying to defend or conquer castles in Cyrodiil or in end-game 12 men trials. The former one is literally laggy as hell and ZOS is working for quite some time to investigate in the reasons and experimenting with certain settings to improve the situation, without any real improvements yet, while the latter one results in one-shot mechanics where you get hit by stuff before it actually appeared on your screen or it was somekind telegraphed by boss animations. This was the actual reason why I quit the game 3 years ago because I had to stream everything I do as people at some point though I am making stuff up. This lead to lots of frustration within the group and constant naming and shaming. Till this day I haven't really returned to progress-oriented endgame-raiding even though I was asked for.
    The only thing I wish ESO had was an event-based system in its open world similar to GW2 that motivates people to be out in the world and to have an impact on the world. Maybe also the log-in reward system GW2 has as currently ZOS offers a daily login reward where you see the reward for the whole month with the most attractive stuff usually bein exactly in the middle and at the end of the month. This somehow forces you to log in every day to not miss out on those goodies and somehow lets you log-in for the wrong reasons into the game. This quickly feels like a must. In GW2 you don't really miss out on that goodie as it will just continue from where you last logged in. While you still miss out on the things you could have obtained in the same time slot, the psychological aspect IMO is a totally different one.

    Leveling in this game is the best part, the endgame is less than stellar. Treating this more like a single player game is the best experience imo.
