- Dream games are a huge topic in the indie game development scene. I mean it seems like everyone is making a dream game devlog but today I'm going to talk about why I will never make my dream game

A dream game to developers isn't just a game you would love to play, but also love to make. Keep up the good work!
No because even people who don’t make games have dream games
@@monstereugene a dream game TO DEVELOPERS
@@supermatcat24 true but I still think my logic stands
@@monstereugene your logic is completely irrelevant to this statement and comes across as very toxic to game developers tho
@@Houtblokje I know I have games I would love to make but probably will never have the chance to. All I'm doing is acknowledging that. This could have been an interesting discussion where we find the difference between games that are made and games that developers want to make but instead, you're calling me toxic for no reason.
Edit: mispelling
I think most solo game devs can relate with your struggle Fairlii. Making games is hard and takes a long time. There's always some shiny new project that comes to mind when you're in the trenches
I have actually not had that problem. I've been working on one game, my first game (I have 20 years other coding experience) for over 3 years now. I have no desire to work on another game - I want to take this first one as high as I can take it. It launches into EA very soon and I currently have 23K wishlists on Steam, so there's real potential for it to be financially viable to a guy with 4 kids and a wife to support!
@@RecOgMission What’s it called?
@@emberdragon4248 World Turtles
True, You get millions of really interesting ideas every day. While working on a game, the next day you could just think: oh wait. This is really cool too!
@@emberdragon4248 by the looks of it, its called "World Turtles"
I feel like the Dream Game concept is more common amongst us older folks who grew up in a world where solo game development didn't really exist-- at least, there were no accessible tools for it. Some of us had decades to dream about the video game we would make on our own if we could... until waking up one day to discover we finally can. By this time we can be overly invested in our untested ideas.
Young people now have the opportunity to experiment with their ideas while they are fresh, rather than letting those ideas ferment into full-fledged dreams before trying them to see which ideas are worth it. And that's awesome.
I think that not finishing games is part of the indie game making process. You learn to make games by making lots of them (or parts of lots of them). The difference between game making and something like painting or drawing is that it isn't practical to fully develop and complete every game you start end to end as you learn and grow in the same way that you could finish lots of drawings or paintings or short stories. Unless we're talking about extremely basic game jam level prototypes, games just take way too long to finish and often you get to a point of diminishing returns with a concept in terms of how much you can still learn from that project versus how much is left to do to release it.
The fact that you've dropped so many projects is, I think, a good sign because you can directly chart how much you've grown and improved as a developer by looking back at those projects. Sure, you could go back and finish your first ever game project but you probably wouldn't learn that much and probably both you and your audience wouldn't be that happy with the end project because we know how much better you can do now. Each iteration of your slime game, for example, has looked way better and been more mechanically interesting than your previous iteration. I think moving on and evolving the concept was the right call each time. Eventually if you keep honing your skills I'm sure you'll reach a point where the insane leaps in your capabilities will start to plateau and it will make more sense to stick with one idea for a long time.
From my perspective it looks like you have been making your dream game for over 4 years now. The name and style and gameplay has changed but its evolved with you, you know? You can dream bigger now in a lot of ways and have more realistic expectations for your dream in others that you couldn't have anticipated before starting game dev.
All this to say, I hope you don't feel like you have to stick with an old concept just to make a RUclips audience happy. I think most of us are here because it's interesting to watch you grow as a developer rather than because we're incredibly invested in one particular project that you're working on.
So beautifully put together and that's how I view the journey I've taken with game development! Obviously I played it up to be a little more dramatic in the video about my reputation and "needing" to finish a game but I honestly feel like I've reached the point where I'm ready to finally release some stuff!
Thank you for such a well thought out comment I'm very appreciative that you spent the time to write this, thank you❤️
That's it, totally agree. It's a journey and the first step is to build games to learn about the engine, how to do art and how to code
@Fairlii good luck on your journey
I would agree with starting many projects
But only if that happens in the learning phase
I've been doing gamedev for 5 years
Have around 30-40 projects started by now and I only have like 2 completed *jam games* to my name
I gotta start learning how to finish games
It's a skill you ought to learn sooner
So much wisdom in one comment!
This is so relatable, Over the course of 3 years I've worked on 9 or so different projects and a good other 4 as sole concepts. These other RUclipsrs make it look so easy. to see someone describe the real struggles really speaks to me.
Hopefully you'll continue your projects and finish them!
I relate with this quite a bit actually, things start popping into my head as dream games and I can’t really focus on one of my games
Ive had multiple games come to me in a dream, even entirely planned out universes but sadly I doubt I can actually make it.. It used to be the only stuff I dreamt about
Dude, you can achieve anything if your tenacious enough. Don’t give in to your self esteem issues and just make it
Hey Fairli I definitely agree with you on that note of not making a dream game. As a solo developer I thought my dream would be a big hit but I stopped & realized my goals shifted with GameDev. I honestly just want to make games that make people happy!
-best of luck to you 😊
If you start developing a game with the intent of learning new stuff about the engine, it's OK to quit before release. We are allowed to start and not finish any project. For example I'm a backend developer with Java and outside of my daily job, I never did a project from beginning to the end. I do many small projects just to try out new technologies and practice some coding. What I want to say is that you don't need to care about what people think about you, it's your journey of learning how to game dev. All the games you started and never finished thought you important lessons about game dev. Now, after many years of working with several projects, you are ready to finish a project and release it.
Thank you for the great and well thought out comment!❤️
To be honest I made the video a little more dramatic for the sake of entertainment haha so I'm not too bothered about what people think of me I just wanted a more dramatic and suspenseful way of saying that I feel ready to release a game
The approach I’ve been taking for my big games is to do smaller games every month alongside it to change it up, it’s a ton a work… but it’s kept me going on it. Excited to see what you make next!
love seeing all that art from the previous games. A lot of work went into all of it.
Very understandable and relatable. I struggle with starting and stopping projects not just in game development but in any hobby. Sometimes dropping the hobby after a week or so. Sometimes this isn't a bad thing because you learn new things but if you're repeating the same thing over and over without growing it can be. Personally I started setting year goals. Last year was to make a card game and I got enough of it done that I was happy to submit it to a publisher and move on. I never heard back, but that's okie cause I still accomplished my goal. This year I'm working on a mashup of two game ideas I've had on the back burner for a few years. Just gotta keep chugging along.
"Mixing farming games and slimes together is definitely a way to get an audience" You got that right! just look at stardew valley!
I know that struggle! So many projects I have canceled, so many years i have lost… But now I am finally confident, that I finish my metrodvania project i am working on!
I know you can do it Fairlii! One day you’ll finish Gelli Fields and Luna Lane. You can then move to this other one! Just don’t give up!
Been enjoying your journey and I'm glad you're taking the step to finish what you have before starting something new. I definitely know how it feels to have the draw of many games to build.
You want to end the cycle, finish the game. Giving up on the game is just re-enforcing the cycle, not breaking it. You have to learn to force yourself to finish and not restart. Don't let it get stuck in feature creep either.
Not how mental health and burnout work. Youre not giving good advice. If anything, youre giving the *worst possible advice.* shut it.
And its funny you say that considering youve never made an indie game. You dont even have a single devlog on your channel.
@@ShyDigi I know, it's almost like I enjoy making games for myself and my close friends instead of public recognition.
Oh how I've tried a few times and failed to make my dream game.... One day... 😢
The scope and expectations I have for it are just too much for one person to handle. Great for RUclips clicks though. 😅
I have a cool game idea. Dragon Ball, right? But like, make it an open-world RPG.
After working on one game for a year already, I think it just gets better later on, I find it harder to put down. When I'm demotivated I usually do some technical changes and that's more than enough. Consider this
The constant struggle of having too many ideas and not enough finished products.
It's pretty common to me to wake up having a good idea. Sometimes I immediately start working on it. Sometimes I lose interest in it, sometimes I keep working on the project for months. But in the end, I never finish a project.
The only things, which remain, are tools, which can be used for multiple things. Since when I create a new project, I often start from something I already have.
So I pack some part of my program into a new library, if it isn't already, and try to make it more general to work with both my old project and my new project.
Sometimes I just get lost in the library or tool I'm writing, so when the tool is finished, maybe months later, I already lost interest in the idea I had.
And let's talk about ADHD!
Novelty really drives that beast, so when you get bogged down in the dull stuff or face ANY challenge that seems hard, you bail. OK, I bail. Maybe you do too.
And then it's all like, "oh, this shiny new idea will be soooo much better and won't have these boring challenges."
Rinse. Repeat.
Please don't say the truth. It hurts so much.
I feel you. I have been making games since the days of MS-DOS but I didn't actually finish a game until recently, when I made my console.
Whatever you stop or start making stuff I will always support you and your answer
Haven’t watch you in a bit, but I must say good luck!
Sorry that you haven't watched my content in awhile, was there a particular reason why you stopped?
@@Fairlii Not any specific reason really, still great content though
I’m not a game developer, but I do have a dream game I would love to see or make someday. The idea is that it is an open world city game set in the near future, and the player can play as different characters, each having different superpowers or abilities. There might by storyline or story mode to follow, but my main idea is that it would just be a free for all open world. So basically Lego marvel super heroes meets gta 😅 I’ve made this exact game in Fortnite creative, but there is only so much you can do in that. Maybe some day I’ll get into unreal engine and try, I just have no clue on how to do anything with coding and such and wouldn’t know where to start, not to mention how massive the game would end up being, but it’s and idea… 🤷♂️
Yay it’s a good day when Farlii has posted
I have that reputation too XD I make so many things but I have finished just like 4 or 5
This is the most relatable video I've watched on game developing
This video: *exists*
Me stupid ass working on 4 different projects : *visible exhaustion*
ive been working on my game for like 5 years and it has gone absolutely nowhere, and i basically lost all passion for my project, just adding more and more things to a list that will never shrink
don't be like me or smt motivational idk, don't force yourself to work on something just because you want it done
I'm having a ton of fun with gamedev actually
Ngl I have same problem I like drawing making story’s and stuff but sometimes I run out of ideas I loose the papers forget very good ideas and so on or I can’t draw the certain thing properly I have story’s and never finish them
I've also had this issue as a developer, however near the start of a game I'm currently making, I think I finally figured it out, you can make other small games if it helps inspire you for your main one, however don't show other games to anyone if you're working on something bigger, not even your family. Showing off a game you're not meant to be working on will train you not to make other games during it or at the very least not to get completely off track. And occasionally you should put out a teaser for the game, this both rewards you for making it, and puts on pressure, now people outside of your social group are expecting it. However, the former is far more important, as you probably know considering you make devlogs which are essentially 20-minute-long segments of teasers. If this works, please tell me!
I have a game i want to finish that i started working on when i was just a noobie... I intend to finish it but i have been sidetracked many many times, to the point it has been 2 years since i last added something to my game... But i know i will come back eventually, i like to finish things, and that was my "dream game" (even if now i have more dream games lmao), so i think it is about that. Even if you get sidetracked on other projects, do not abandon your last ones, even if you have to reduce the scope you had, finish your games, it is super cool to be able to play a game of your creation, even if it is short :)
dreaming a game up is amazing isnt it, thats how I came up with my last one. Good vid, sorry to hear u lost some games, with unity you got to be very careful at the start, who knows it might have been salvagable somehow.
I don't really like the idea of a dream game because it is that, a dream. I will never be able to make a game to the standard that I set for one because as I gain more knowledge, the threshold for my dream game would move and never stay in an obtainable space.
i also keep making new projects and never finish my games but now i have a small list of what i wanna make to not get too far off what i need to make
the dream of actually finishing a project is so real.
im not less a game developer and more of a general programmer but i have tried making some games. But i think that out of all of the projects ive started ive maybe finished 1 or 2
Ok but like that won’t stop me from trying
hey thanks! you just made me realise that i have the same problem = D
same happens to me, I always start progress on a game then just stop developing on it maybe sometimes come back to the game just to almost nothing
After so many attempts i release my first game and now I don’t have any confidence left to complete any more games. Yet I am trying everyday to achieve that. Hope you will find a lot of success with your upcoming game.
As long as you stick with it I'm sure you'll be able to release the game, remember making games isn't easy or quick!
@@Fairlii Thanks for your words. I completed my first game and released on Android. The thing that demotivates me is there are so many developers making way better games than I could ever make. And there are so many game developers uploading beautiful games everyday and it looks like I don’t hold any chance if i try to make my living out of game development.
@@mayankbhaisora2699 what is the name of your game? I would love to check out. And also, I think having so many people better than you is just something in general and something that shouldn't demotivate you. Unless you want to become the absolute best in something, there will always be people better than you. That is both an inspiration and the sign that you should always continue improving so you can keep up with them. Plus, "better" is an objective statement. In what areas, for hoe long? Maybe the end result is better, but your passion can always be greater, which is why we do anything at all. Anyway, hope you continue to make games and get inspiration from the people better than you!
@@Ajinnora Thanks man… Making games is my passion and I will always keep making games it’s just making living out of indie game development seems almost impossible for me, and I will have to stick with my current job to survive. But yes as you said I won’t stop making games regardless of their quality and try to improve as much as I can.
@@Ajinnora My game is on Android Play Store with name “Rapidy”…
im having the same problem but worse, because i have like 300 games and some of them are just random ideas that i started then just left there
I have a dream game, it's 2d, pixel, with a witch, based on a movie i made with my cousins
Great video man. I also struggle with shiny project syndrome lol
Wow, haven't seen a comment from you in forever! Good to see you
@@Fairlii Ay, thanks man. I took a looong break from game dev. It's cool to see what you've been working on!
Ngl this game looked so cool, shame will never get to see it. Also is the one game you are going to finish geli fields
I understand so much how you feel about game deving,
Im fear about give up from my dream project
I have ADD and autism having a billion projects allows me to complete them and I only have 1 dream project make my 1000 year alt future Sci-fi setting into a massive multimedia IP... Which I am doing by making onnes of different creative stuff like books, art and games. I 'm 4 years into serious development of this dream project and it's going great! Even if the total published conent for it is 1 500 page novel and a few hudnndred art posts... But then again on my RUclips the core project so my work of all the little projects so people can see it being made... Which what is looking like my most successful project next to RUclips/Devaint is my Universal TT wargame/RRPG which will have a Der's story version so it all good... Point is don't stop working on one thing just to focus on another that way you may end up as the one tthing guy who still didn't finish anything.
will you make another gelli fields video?
My dream game is a particle simulation game like noita, but it's more of a factory builder than a rogue like.
Need more training in programming before that's a possibility tho
this video made me cry I hope it happens eventually
dam, those types of dreams soon become nightmares

go try the dream code... only to realise, you've tried it already, your sleep deprived mind betrays you :_(

Wow. I very relate. I have a dream game that im still looking for a game engine for. But till then i have been making small practice games but i keep switching to a diff game and remaking. I've made a slime game kinda like gelli fields like 5 times now.
Wow, I'm hoping you'll eventually be able to find the right engine and make that game❤️

10/10 video, very good, much relatable… just one small thing.
I happened to see there, in like a three second clip, you know, I’d just like to know why…
Why is it that you were placing the tile edges manually instead of using a tile map? Why did you have to wake up and choose violence against my soul? There is a gaping wound permanently imprinted on my psyche thanks to you, and it will probably take years to recover.
If it was in Unity I was using a tilemap my recording software just wasn't recording all the windows
robuilder also should make a vid like this
Good on you for sticking with gelli fields
Some give up and make asset store assets and sell to people with dreams of making their dream game. Far less scope to target.
I wish I had a passion like you do!
Will you publish gelli fields and if so when
Lmao dude forfeiting even before the match starts.
Ok
I find making games is a lot easier if you take fear out of the equation at least from my experience
Or at least understand why you're afraid
Hingewood tumbles main character looks like my profile :P
the point of making dream game devlogs is to get tons of views lol
tl;dr: You don't have * A * dream game. You have many.
tl;dr: the comment is this person's take on what the video means
This is the first video I've seen of yours
idk how to code, but I really want to make a horror game as my dream game
1:48 You didn't regularly commit to git and for extra safety push it, I guess?
It is sad how that is the reputation you built up, but lets hope either GF or LL fixes that so you can start working on this game
❤
Also if you want to finish a game why not make a short one that would only take up to a year of dev time? And charge like a USD for it? Like a Gelli tank where you are stuck on a single screen and you jsut raise gellis in a sandbox fish tank like thing? nIt won't be you tdream game but it would be easy to make.
Super inspiring
Haha, my dream game also a slime metroidvania!
I like your art style
Thank you!
I like fungus
RUclips needs consistent change a lot more than game dev. I don't really vlog about it which means my game can be a little bit more complicated than these. Good luck with finishing something.
My dream game would take freaking years to make. I would have to to it alone because no matter how good people working with me would be nobody can envision your ideas like yourself

When you said your game was corrupt... You ARE using source control now, right??
I never knew he had an anxiety disorder?
I want lunal lane :3
Stop making dream games. Altogether. If your problem is finishing something you need to take time out and make something small. I'm not talking side project, couple months of work small. I'm talking game jams. 1-3 days of work. At that point you can work your way up with longer and longer projects until completing a month long side project becomes attainable. You have great ideas and your passion to push through is admirable, but if you wanna finish games you have to start out as small in scope as possible
I wouldn't necessarily say there's a be all end all solution to game development as it varies per person. I've worked on these projects for years and every retry I had for a project, every rework, and every art overhaul only ever honed my skills further. If you listened to the video I said that my skills have improved so much that I am now able to finish projects. Thank you for the concern and the thought out comment I appreciate it a ton, and thank you for watching the video❤️
I tried to develop a game. The game destroyed my entire pc. Wow I really understand the P A I N here
Damn
@@Fairlii Also when I try to code the game just deletes itself. I really need to go and find more devs.
I was here before Geli World, probably everyone else was too, but whatever, FF (fungus forever)
