The biggest problem with Renault Clios, and indeed All Renaults of this sort of era (2001+) comes from 3 very tiny little things. I have a 2003 1.2 16v Renault Clio, and this fix has worked for me, and for a 2005 Renault Scenic that came into my Petrol Station. My car used to mis-fire, only rev to 4,000rpm, sound like a lawnmower, cut out randomly, not turn over unless I walked away for 15 minutes and it was infuriating to say the least. Two garages, and 3 RAC callouts later, one RAC man who was experienced in the field finally found my problem. My relays. Thats right. Lift your bonnet. Locate the large Fuse box / Relay Centre on the right hand side next to the car battery. Lift open the shitty plastic lid, and inside you'll see some huge Fuses and 3 little black boxes, about the size of a rubber you used to have in school. Those three relays decipher all the signals going to your car from your key to the engine, and so on. You can gently pry one out, by using upward pulling and very tiny wiggles (the relays have teeth that could break if you yank it out) Now check the metal teeth. Most probably they are tinged green with oxidisation and rust. Now as a temporary fix, get a wire brush and comb the teeth in an upward/downward motion to remove some of this shit on it, so it can properly make a connection in the port. Put them back in and enjoy a problem free day/week/month (depending on the state of the relay) Now make a log of the number on the top of the relay, and go buy some friggin new ones. Mine cost me I think £5 for a three pack, and ever since I have been laughing at my naivety!
@arclife404 Thanks, i'll check this out on the weekend. Logged a complaint with Renault and after an hour long conversation they don't think it's their fault that all these problems are happening. crazy.
@bender528 this is true, accelerator potentiometer conector... its stationed left of the clutch pedal, disconect it (the car must be turned off) , clean the pins, and bend them a bit, connect them back and drive :)
It could be that lambda sensor is causing some problems, they recommended change annually or after 20.000 miles (32.000 km). Fuel quality is also of great importance.
Hi there! im sure your sick of people asking but you are the only uploader on YT with this problem so please help ! So what exactly did you do to fix it ? can it be done from home by a person with no mechanical experience ? Im really stuck with this problem and need to fix it pronto because driving my clio is getting dangerous! thankyou
I have a 2001 12cc 16v Clio which has the exact same problem as in this video. Will only rev up to 4000 revs. Having located the problem on mine, it was a loose wire on the fuse box which is just right of the battery. The part of the fuse box which has the 3 black relays. Hope this helps.
I had the same problem!!! and finally it was the connector on the accel pedal. hold tight, or disconnect and connect again... it was a connector problem. it worked for me. I tried disconnecting the ECU before, but didn't solve the problem
did you ever get this fixed? My mate has the exact same problem! sometimes it wont go away even after restarting his engine lol, But fiddling with all the wires under the hood usually does the trick lmao
It might be the coolant temperature sensor, if no-one else has suggested that? I know on my Megane, the rev limiter cuts in a lot earlier when the engine's cold (sometimes 5500 or less, vs normally 6500~6750), as a self-protective measure. In very cold conditions - or when the sensor puts out a signal suggesting them - it might be as low as 4000? Though if that's the case, the ECU obviously takes its information from a different place to where the dashboard gauge does... ;-)
Also it could be an oil level / pressure sensor reading too. My first car (VW Polo) would sound a piercing alarm noise if you revved beyond 2000rpm when it detected a low oil level (ie enough to permanently light the warning lamp). This could be the modern iteration...? Or indeed the lambda sensor. If it's reading a permanently lean or otherwise erroneous condition, limiting revs is a good idea. A pathologically lean fuel-air mixture + high rpms generally lead to melted pistons...
my boy has a 16v 2003 1.2 petrol. New battery, new starter, just a click when i turn it over. Tried to jump start it but that didn't work. Don't fancy bumping it as Live on a very steep hill?
My Clio mk 2 from 2001 does the exact same thing. Even though the spark-lugs, electric distributor, gas pedel censor and crankshaft censor all have been changed. I don't know if the last thing to do is to check the catalytic convertor and the lambda censors? please help
Same problem with my car! I have Renault Clio 2001 1.4 16V - not diesel, and that indicator constantly switches on and off. Today I have noticed that it runs very slowly and powerless when indicator is glowing. I've read original French manual, it says that something is wrong in the system, but still not solution.
hey man ! i have exakt the same problem . waht can be the problem ? becouse when i turn off and start the car it goes away and works just fine. let me know please
hi i actually reached the same conclusion with my car, but how strong are u sure about this, i replaced the throttle, and the acceleration padel, and reporgramed the ECU and still the same issue. what do you suggest from here< please reply.
@arclife404 I'm having trouble locating this mysterious black metal cage - would you mind sharing a pic / location description please? Is it in the engine bay or somewhere under the dash? Cheers!
why can i only get low revs when first starting a orange light comes on the one with the squiggly lines after about 10mins the light goes of then its ok please help
i had this problem. after changing a few parts that didnt work. he found water around the connectors on ECU. he dried it out all ok. happened again 4wks later. some thing with water. he dried it again and it was ok. i kept checking under my bonnet after every drive a nd found water was getting under the screen wash nozzle and dripping on to the ECU. i sorted this by routing the screen wash pipe inside the bonnet and having a loop under the nozzle, water now just dripps straight down
i had same pile of poo, plugged it into computer said it was 02 sensor, turned out it was the sercuty fitting ontop of ecu rattling and went thro wiring loom causing all sorts of trouble including fly by wire not working, check it out!!!!
@arclife404 Ye i have that link saved somewhere as well as one on the Renault forums. If i find them i'll also share the links. Explained that to Renault this morning and the lady kept insisting that forums are not reliable sources of information, then later told me i should join the renault forums as they are a great source of information. I told her as they are not willing to help i'll be adding my complaint to the watchdog case that is building against them.
Probably you have your problem solved right now... my clio sometimes did that than it started to reject my key code... guess what... the rear light connectors had a bit of dust... problem solved
My dci clio is best when I rev it all smoke comes out it's monumental police warned me that its toxic to the public but fuck the police its my tractor 🚜 Il drive it if I want to lol 😂

Midgento Czinok
Midgento f
Midgento, thanks, yep corrosion on 2 pins of those black relays , mine had an idle fault, coil light came on.

Clean the throttle thoroughly and change the three small electric relays that have the same values.
Cleared the fault codes.
I had the same problem, it was the motor harness, i have changed it with a used one and no more trouble,
thnx man so much will add to the trial list :) thnx again for replying.

was your coil light showing up immediately after turning the key to position 1 ?

Seems to be a common fault , mines up and down like Jordans knickers.

i got the same problem. the compressor governor maybe?
...never buying a frensh again...

It could be your throttle by wire unit or your tps sensor. Common problem on Sport models

Had this problem! Take out the air filter box and clean along with the throttle body
What is that light in the middle? This comes on in my car when I reach anywhere around 2700 revs?
hey man !
i have exakt the same problem . waht can be the problem ?
becouse when i turn off and start the car it goes away and works just fine.
let me know please
@Cardie94 Sorry lol, well it really sounds like a diesel?
how did u fix it ? I'm having the same problem to.
as far as i know that light is not about any sensor. its for the plugs at the diesel engines. so there is no problem with your cars!
hi! I got a 1.4 16v, got the same problem and it was the lambda sensor
hi i actually reached the same conclusion with my car, but how strong are u sure about this, i replaced the throttle, and the acceleration padel, and reporgramed the ECU and still the same issue.

@Cardie94 Most small diesels will still rev to 4500 or more...
what did he do about it, please share if you can.
Clean the throttle body,, gets covered in oil residue , My idle was crap , rev for a while light would go out.
jai le meme probleme dans ma cleo ,,comment as tu regler le probleme ??
I had this problem, water got into ecu and I needed to swap it
ah, ok! ididn't know that! good day!
It is a diesel.
why can i only get low revs when first starting a orange light comes on the one with the squiggly lines after about 10mins the light goes of then its ok please help

you could see the water collecting round the nozzle when driving on wet days
check your EGR Valve!!!!!!
have 2003 cleo serv light stays on and airbag light stays on any solution thanks
under passanger seat there is a connector to side airbags, move, wiggle a little or spray some wd40 on it, and it will be ok.
Mine has the same problem just wiggle the plugs and push em in usually fixes the problem
Its a ECU problem take it to a mechanic mine had the same.
epic fail
@rick19831000 do you know where this is located please?
i had same pile of poo, plugged it into computer said it was 02 sensor, turned out it was the sercuty fitting ontop of ecu rattling and went thro wiring loom causing all sorts of trouble including fly by wire not working, check it out!!!!
Ha, I can beat this, my 1.2 Clio randomly cuts out. I've had a new coil pack & plugs.

spark plugs!
my car has this problem untill i turn it of and back on sometimes. may be because of modified exhaust i heard..
Probably you have your problem solved right now... my clio sometimes did that than it started to reject my key code... guess what... the rear light connectors had a bit of dust... problem solved
that seems to be idling very high, my 1.2 idles at only 700rpm.
mine only ~550-600 rpm
launch control ? xDD
Clean out the throttle body!!!
O meu Clio tá acendendo a luz da injeção
In mine was alternator problem
its a diesel
French cars , you know they're shit but still we buy them and bits fall off, electrics fail.
Sonda a luz da injeção ya acessa
