Rewatching from the beginning tho, this doesn’t make sense with how horribly Melissa treated Spencer throughout the show. If she went through all this to protect her, why was she so awful? Like, if she knew about Alison and Ian, why did she treat Spencer like she was a crazy girl with a crush on her husband and also make their parents take her side instead of taking her concerns about him seriously? Like, where was the protection from her predatory husband who she KNEW had a thing for underaged girls? This just definitely felt like something they decided to do when it was too late to reverse the damage and make it make any ounce of sense.

Okay so I noticed 0:46 before and I came up with an entire theory about it but I never said anything until just now. I saw Marlene say in an interview that she really liked the idea Troian gave her that Spencer has a twin. Well think about it, what if Spencer does have a twin and she was the one who killed Bethany. She recorded Melissa admitting to the crime that she committed.

To make it as simple as possible: Melissa saw Spencer with the shovel the night of Ali's disappearance after fighting with her, then she saw "Ali's" body so she thought Spencer killed Ali. She buried her in order to protect Spencer, only to find out she was ALIVE and not Ali at all, but Bethany Young. I believe she was telling the truth. We still have a lot of unanswered questions though, like who hit Ali, who hit Bethany (technically Melissa killed her by burying her alive but something made her unconscious) and who changed Bethany’s clothes to make her identical to Ali?

alex salazar apparently Bethany knew Alison, they were pen pals, she gave her a "Yellow Top" so the same night she must of worn the same outfit, explains why they are wearing the same outfit not that A put on the yellow top... Alison just gave her the same outfit, or her mom did...
Growing up is realizing Melissa truly cared for Spencer, and was trying to protect her as she through that Spencer had killed Alison.

Adrianne Tennant Mona actually killed Bethany where Mona thought she was killing Ali which was explained on the show. Which is also why she was surprised when she found Alison alive walking in one scene when she was cruising on by in the forest in her car.

This does not make sense AT ALL in the timeline, just like nothing else does. Ali told spencer to go back to the girls, then she was hit in the head, buried by her mother, managed to escape, this other girl was hit in the head, and melissa sees spencer walking away with the shovel? She must be a REALLY slow walker lol. Great job writers

Okay I know the show is over but I thought about this and realized it doesn't make sense. Think about it, right before that scene where Spencer was dragging the shovel, there was another flashback in which she fights with Alison and the pills fall whatever and she tells her to go back to the barn. WELL, we know now that Alison was alive and probably got hit a few minutes after that, and then Mrs. D buried her, then she got pulled out, THEN Melissa buried Bethany in that same spot. Now, chronologically, that doesn't make sense unless Melissa was walking around the barn for a good 20 minutes which gave it enough time for Alison to be hit, pulled out, and enough time for Mona to so conveniently hit Bethany next to Alison's open spot and for Melissa to find her and bury her and go about her night. Now, some will dispute this by saying that Melissa buried Bethany in a different spot, but both Bethany and Alison were buried in the same backyard. If you think a little, Alison got hit a few minutes after leaving Spencer and buried, and Melissa saw Spencer leaving and went to buy Bethany. Wouldn't Melissa and Mrs. D see each other burying bodies? Wouldn't she see Cece? Again, the only way this could have worked out is if Melissa found the body about 15-20 minutes after seeing Alison which is the only logical way for Alison to be buried, pulled out, Bethany hit, and Melissa and Mrs. D burying the body without the two seeing each other...just putting it out there
i have thought this too. i kind feel like they wanted to follow the books of Melisa protecting spencer they just didn't think it through. i can be wrong though. i knw in the books jenna and Melissa both do things to protect the girls and i think the girls suspect them as a ine books at first.

EP 3x13 This is a Dark ride. At the end of the episode the hand reaching out of the ground is not Allison it is Bethany. She came out of the ground first, not Ali. The producers tried to fool and confuse us with Melissa confession and the whole being dug already. We as fans have to trust the timeline when Spencer went back to the barn Ali went to see Byron and went back to the barn. At this point Bethany was buried and Melissa was trying to reach Wilden. CeCe had been corresponding with Bethany pretending to be Ali and she was the one who bought the yellow tops for both girls and herself. The plan was to frame Ali for murder because she knew about the affair Mrs. D had been having with Mr. Young.
In EP 4x25 when Bryon leaves the backyard the camera pans down to the shovels there are 3 shovels 2 are clean and one is full of dirt. Meaning Melissa already had buried who she thought was Ali. She comes out on Ali's back porch thinking Ali was dead but her view of Ali was blocked by the tree she was standing behind.
Back to the topic at hand Ali walks home not knowing Bethany is looking for her and gets bashed in the head with a brick. Then Bethany weak and bloody from getting hit and Buried herself drops the rock at her feet (Remember she was dressed just like Ali form top all the way down to her shoes) and drips blood on the brick and collapses to the ground.
The dead body was identified as Bethany though.
Yeah we can't trust that sense it seems A has some medical knowledge and they stole the body first. Besides these are the same people who said it was Ali at first. 5x25 I hope we get the answers we need finally

I just noticed something.... back in season one, the girls get alison's bracelet from her body (given to them from Jason/ cop ( can't remember) Since the body was bethany's this means that the killer really did go for every last detail. Also maybe the killer was alison herself, because she didn't like bethany ( lured her to rosewood). Ali could have made bethany seem just like Ali because bethany was mentally ill, and could ave not understood the situation. Going on with this theory, Bethany could have hit Ali with the rock.. and mrs d would have protected bethany..... Then Alison could have gone for revenge and killed bethany. Alison has not shown the bracelet since we had seen it in flashbacks, so possibly she planted the bracelet on bethany!!!

This still doesn't explain why Melissa was outside anyway and if she did think her sister killed her why would she bury her I would have seen if she was still alive and that was a horrible excuse to leave her sister with something like that but Melissa is still shady they never explained why she was with Jenna and shana in 3x24 finale and who started the lodge fire they just dismissed that and also what about when Spencer was talking to Melissa on that bridge I don't know what episode but I think it was season 3 and Melissa was like "I'm in it to protect you you don't understand" and what about when she and Jason was on the Halloween train and was about to push Aria off the train?!!!
Melissa told Spencer that she sent Jenna and Shana to the lodge that night to look for the person the liars were going there to meet and figure out who redcoat was. She also said that Jenna and Shana claimed to have seen Wilden start the fire. I can't remember whether we ever got confirmation on if those claims were truth or lies, but I do remember that they addressed it.
What i got was a big question

Spencer didn't hit that girl. Melissa saw Spencer walk towards Alison with a shovel so Melissa thought Spencer killed Alison. Later on in the night Melissa saw a girl wearing the same clothes as Alison but didn't see a face. She was trying to protect Spencer so she buried the girl, but now she realized that she didn't bury Alison it was Bethany Young.

If that was Bethany Young... then why does she have blood on the back of her head like Alison did? I thought someone hit Alison with a rock to the back of her head, After she got out from the grave! So the girl melissa buried has to be Ali right?! This show has plot holes...
Someone hit Alison with a rock. Her mother saw it, thought she was dead and buried her. But in fact Alison wasn't dead and Mrs. Grunwald helped her out of the grave.
Same with Bethany. Someone hit her on the head. (That's why Melissa thought that Spencer hit her with the shovel) Melissa found her, thought she was dead and buried her. But Bethany wasn't dead either. It was no one there to help her out of the grave, so she died by suffocation.
But you're right. It seems pretty unreal that both of the girls experienced the same...
This show does have a bunch of plot holes but I think Hanna's theory in 4x14 covered this. Her theory was that someone went to a lot of trouble to make the girl in the grave (Bethany Young) look like Alison, down to her wearing the exact same clothes as her, because they really wanted everyone to believe that Alison was the person in the grave. The question is, who would benefit the most from that? The person who tried to kill Ali? Someone who wanted Alison gone? Or was somebody already planning to kill Bethany and they found a good way to cover up their crime?
I am 100% sure that this isn't a plot hole but rather a clue. One of the two, either Melissa or Ali is lying and my bet is on Ali.
