My uncle and his mates used to work collecting and disposing of rubbish. They once had to collect a piano from the top floor of a tower block. What did they do? Drop the thing of the roof. It was easier and more fun than carrying it down all the stairs.
My neighbor recently tried to donate a full upright to anyone that would take it. She was even willing to pay moving costs. She contacted every church, community center, school, music instructor, and etc. No one wanted it or knew anyone who might want it. She placed an ad on Craigslist and didn't get any response. In our area people just don't play piano like they used to and organizations that might be interested already have all the pianos they need.
Yes the Acrosonics are decent and quite plentiful. True about the older ones, but if you know someone who knows what they're doing, or you ARE someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to piano work, then those old ones are just flipping awesome!
This was a spinet piano. Millions made but sadly not have the sound like a good piano due to its shorter strings. More valuable as recycle material than in its present condition. I salvaged a Hammond organ a couple of years ago from the trash haulers, MIDI the manuals and pedalboard, and hooked up Hauptwerk to turn it into a good practice pipe organ.
Pianos are very heavy. And those wires are under major tension. If someone tries to just cut them without loosening the bolts first, they can whip back at you and really hurt you.
They never imagined that piano could be restored and tuned. I'm not professional fixing pianos, but I know how to get tuned and remove and put back all the keys.
Guys just doing their job - but heart breaking to see. Owners must have had other options. Even if not a perfect instrument would have been ok for someone to learn on. Then could have passed on to others or sold it at a giveaway price. I'll go and give my piano a hug.
Sometimes no one will take it even if it's free. Too much hassle to transport it, tune it, replace parts. It's like an old car. Best to junk it than replace all the bad parts.

@mokeimusic thank you, In mexico is to dificult to get some piano, but moving is cheap, maybe in USA pianos are everywhere you are right
As a piano player, I hate seeing this. If I were the neighbor, I would have taken it. It just seems like a sad waste, A lot of time goes into making a real piano.
I have been begging and pleading with friends and all kinds of local charities to take the piano I have for free for over a year now. I don't care about a tax donation. If you want it, it is yours.
No joke: No one wants a spinet piano around me. I've called plenty of places to donate it, asked friends, no dice. I'll be destroying mine tomorrow. "Never judge a man or woman by whether or not they destroy their piano until you try to donate one yourself"
its so sad to watch this video... what can we do to match the needs of the haves and the havenots? this piano could have gone somewhere to some people who would want it...
To all those complaining that it is wastefulness to destroy a piano, I have a piano console that I would like to get rid of. Come and get it, it is all yours. It will need a tuning. (location : NYC)
That is not a full upright piano! That's a spinet. But crushing it that easily is still an impressive feat. As a piano tuner, I come across many pianos that people give away, and if you just look on craigslist you'll see how little value low quality spinets actually hold. If this was a grand piano, or even a decent upright, this would make me sad, but spinets are practically worthless. The parts could have been used though!!!
That was a spinet piano that they disposed of. With a few exceptions, spinet pianos are of little value and most of them are not acceptable musically. The noteworthy exception to the rule when it comes to the spinet pianos is the Baldwin Acrosonic since they were made much better than almost any other spinet piano. Most of them also sound decent too.
By watching this video, you have just witnessed a crime. There is no need for the destruction of a perfectly useful instrument. DONATE your unwanted pianos, organs, etc to Salvation Army or GoodWill. They will gladly take them and someone who needs a piano or organ will have an opportunity to have one. KIJIJI & Craigslist can be another option. You can give it away and ask the customer pick up at their expense. The piano in this video should have lived ! Some people like spinets fine.
I've called many donation places, sometimes the piano is too far gone to save. It's like an old car. You're better off sending it to a dump than replacing all the bad parts.
I have an old piano, I asked a restorer what it would cost to fix it. Repairs would be in the thousands, not much lower than a new piano. Old pianos have negative value and giving them away is of no benefit to the recipient. However, there are many recyclable parts that should recycled.
@AlanDiBlasio If you PAID to move it you might have got it.moving and tuning would cost you at least $500. SO do you have $500? YOu can get free piano`s EVERYWHERE but you still have to get it home and tune it.
you all assume too much. i have an old schiller right now. refurbished it might be worth 2000-2500 but it would cost me 1200 to get it working right, but the wood needs tons of work and doesnt look right. so cosmetically its horrid. add another 500+.. and its now not worth it. if i was in NY id call these guys in a heartbeat.
Even professional piano moving companies are taking dozens of pianos to the dump each year because they can't sell them used. An old upright piano is extremely expensive to tune and maintain, like hundreds or even thousands of dollars. You can buy a new digital piano for no more than a few thousand dollars that never needs to be tuned.
I don't blame these guys they are just doing their job, however if in ok condition donate it to a school or church etc or donate for recycling. Old pianos most often are made of very high quality and sometimes rare hardwoods that people pay huge money for. Turn that wood into anything from, new guitars, book shelves, head boards etc....no GOOD reason to hit a landfill
...Hmmm..metal hook onto wood. Not good, as that scratches the wood. Needed some padding against that piano's wood first to protect it from that bad 'ol big metal hook.
For someone who feels bad for that piano being trashed, i can tell from my own experience that those are horrible pianos, Bad sound and Action that fails all the time but those are still better than these Electric pianos.
A lot of ignorant statements about trashing a piano. It's probably too far gone to fix. Owners most likely couldn't give it away and needed it gone due to moving, downsizing, etc. As a pianist, I understand the travesty of trashing a piano like this, but I've had to do the same with my old piano (from the 1930s). Nobody would take it, not Goodwill or anyone. Had to drive it to a dump.
I wish the idiot guy filming didn't tell the other guy working the hopper to scoop the whole piano in one piece, I really wanted to see it get crushed down the middle!
I don't know about this piano but most have a cast iron frame so although the blade could be plunged in and could probably break or bend the frame it could possibly damage the blade or jam it when it tries to sweep if the thickness of the frame is larger than the gap between the blade and the hopper floor. I don't know how sophisticated this packer is (whether it will sense an uncrushable object or just try ploughing on regardless). This should satisfy you:- ruclips.net/video/8yppLbTgGr0/видео.html

That was a beautiful piano

Many missions or gathering places where they serve meals to homeless takes pianos consider those resources
Yes the Acrosonics are decent and quite plentiful. True about the older ones, but if you know someone who knows what they're doing, or you ARE someone who knows what they're doing when it comes to piano work, then those old ones are just flipping awesome!
There are pianos that are beyond repair.

bye bye piano and thank you Dimola Bros for your hard work and dedication
Garbage trucks are awesome! Is there anything they can't crush?
There is always Craigslist. Did you try to put a add up on there?
Pianos are very heavy. And those wires are under major tension. If someone tries to just cut them without loosening the bolts first, they can whip back at you and really hurt you.
I seriously wanted to cry
Poor piano :(
nothings better than a leach
That was very hard to watch

They never imagined that piano could be restored and tuned. I'm not professional fixing pianos, but I know how to get tuned and remove and put back all the keys.
I wish I had a piano even a spinet since I have only a keyboard. So sad :(
No you don't
I would happily accept it.
@toughredneckotaku Actually, yes garbage truck have their limitations just like any other piece of machinery.

It was not a perfectly good piano. Those type of pianos NEED to be destroyed. Truly!
Wow, that must have struck a sour note with musicians.
What kind of piano is this? I like the small form factor!
true story. luckily some old bloke bought my 1870's piano.
The alternative to "Save the Music". How much more effort would have taken to donate this piano to a school? (derogatory question)
They couldn't give it to someone?
Starving kids in Africa could have ate that piano
wow...i wouldve bought that..thats just sad :(
its so sad to watch this video... what can we do to match the needs of the haves and the havenots? this piano could have gone somewhere to some people who would want it...
Nursing homes and similar places often take donations of these. This video is sad.
+ You sounded like you were having fun. And you say it's sad.
There's no beating a LEACH!!!
To all those complaining that it is wastefulness to destroy a piano, I have a piano console that I would like to get rid of. Come and get it, it is all yours. It will need a tuning. (location : NYC)
Your piano movers? Everyone should be fired, they scratched the hell out of it! LOL.........
They are piano movers, as long as the piano needs to be moved to the landfill.

+David Novak Hi David I have a spinet with a great soundboard yours for the asking - located in BK NY - you would have to come get it
+Anna Cangiano Thanks for the offer, but that's a little far for me to drive. I live in central PA. I hope you find someone that will take it though!
Anna Cangiano (Oh, whoops. Possibly David is my other account)

Awww what a waste... I think it can be repaired. You should have donated that piano to people like me... who desires to have one
I have an old piano, I asked a restorer what it would cost to fix it. Repairs would be in the thousands, not much lower than a new piano. Old pianos have negative value and giving them away is of no benefit to the recipient. However, there are many recyclable parts that should recycled.

Surprised a piano got trashed someone could have bought or refurbished it.
I can see a blood piano... so sad, because don't send for other country? there is many people who dream for a new or older piano. So sad...
Way too much work and money to ship it. Would you travel to another country overseas to get a free piano?

I've never met a spinet and I don't want to. From what I've heard they shouldn't have been made in the first place.
You evil people, that piano was completely playable and in quite good condition.
