You're videos are great. NO BS, just fact, clear and to the point.
Is there a rule of thumb for using a straight edge ruler on the frat board and measuring at the saddle?
I just unscrewed my guitar from 25 years ago and found a slice of a telephone card used as a shim... I have been having problems with buzz on the high frets no matter how tall I adjust the saddles. Guess it's time to make some adjustments.
Shimming doesn't affect tone or sustain as long as the neck is butted against the guitar body properly. This is why you should back up the neck screws about a quarter turn AFTER the first time you string your guitar. Then tighten the screws back.
I have a Chinese Dean I'm fixing for the public school, when I took the neck off, it had a couple pieces of folded sandpaper used as a shim not surprising, Fender used business cards, but when checking the neck, there was a physical bow in the heal of the neck raising last fret, do to the shim only supporting at one end and then the bolts pulling the neck down, leaving an air gap in the wedge from the front to back bolts. It wasn't drastic and easy to fix, but now I can say I've seen what happens if the neck shims aren't supporting the entire heal of the neck.
Ace. Just ace!!
Is there a way to measure the neck angle?
Yes
Dylan, I've been building my own guitars (teles) and have been running into the opposite problem w/certain bridges. I have to raise saddles to almost maximum height and put more relief in just to get it from buzzing. I have tried sanding neck that goes into neck pocket and that helps but, it's a lot of sanding. Any other suggestions to help? thanks, Jon
Insert shim at front of neck pocket, allowing you to reduce saddles without string buzz…
I think it was Ampeg that developed the micro tilt.
Building my first Telecaster and first guitar body and if your building a Tele of course you need to Hot Rod it with a Bigsby. So i have been getting a whole lot of Information from your videos which i have found to be no nonsense and Incredibly helpful. I am going to need to make a decision on the bridge before i know how much neck angle it will need to compensate for the extra height. Do you have any bridge recommendations and the required neck angle when using that bridge for a Tele with a B5? Roller makes sense with regards to the prevention of catching when using the bigsby? Man am i glad i found your videos before i picked up my router. Any Information or assistance will be greatly appreciated. Oh and after owning and loving my 1980 US P bass for almost 30 years i discovered it has a shim in between the neck pocket. Thanks Steve
My Epiphone Les Paul Junior has a neck angle and that's completely normal because of the tune o matic style bridge???
But it makes a difference....Something physically changes, adjusting neck tilt vs shim vs true (maple) wedge-shim... the neck IS better coupled to the body... Weather some people hear it or have a placebo effect or not... "Coupling" is Everything for a guitar! With a short shim or micro tilt, you'll create an air pocket. It'll eventually collapse and create a hump, it's just not ideal! Fender created micro tilt for fabrication neck angle "easy" correction.. same for the shims.. I believe so.. Don't want to ad for Stew Mac, but they sell nice maple shims in different degrees.. Or you can make one yourself, which is a bit tricky to get right but this is the solution. Coupling is everything on a resonating instrument!! The glue, the plastics, the wood, strings, screws, bolts, lacquer, windings, wax, ...etc, etc
Ok a cereal box is the best neck shim now what brand cereal we talkin whats the best tone box out there, i do want the good stuff. I say i say thats a joke son a joke. A bad 1but none the less.
It honestly doesn’t make sense that a shim would affect sustain, especially if it’s a wood shim. Would you complain about sustain if your neck heal was a couple mills thicker? No. That’s basically what a shim is doing to your neck.
Shims are good. No mass manufacturer makes everything exactly the same. Plus, I set mine wrong because I like the feel and sound.

Shims are not good! so that should answer that question...
Bad eggs the lot of them...
