    Can I just say this? When I was taking English in university, our Korean lecturer actually confused with our accents, saying why we have American accent when we're studying British English. I just feel like we're more influenced with American accent because of the mass media mixed with our own accent rooted from our mother tongues. Sorry it's a little unrelated haha.

    • @razorlove1881
      @razorlove1881 8 лет назад +21

      +vivianc3004 Owh yeah right. My school science teacher was so irritated with it that he told us to choose which English we want to use and stick with it or he'll take it as the whole answer was wrong because of the mixed spelling.

      @self-ashtualisation 8 лет назад +3

      razorlove1881 Thanks for your clarification :D I was curious regarding its usage and application because I noticed that it had become a trend amongst my Malay and Indian friends to spell 'oh' 'owh'. Amazingly enough, my Chinese friends weren't aware of the trend when I asked them whether they noticed it. I even had a friend who's an Eng lit student like myself who spelt it 'ouh,' which appeared very odd to me. I'd like to know this out of curiosity: does the way you spell 'oh' denote how you pronounce it? I'm really sorry if the question makes you feel uncomfortable; I'm crazy about linguistics, particularly accents :D

    • @zaiism
      @zaiism 8 лет назад +2

      +Ashley Wong Shin Yee sometimes it does, such as when some people say 'ouh', it's basically ow, emphasising on the O.

      Kadz23 So the person who's never been overseas should speak wrong? Why?

    • @xKADZx
      @xKADZx 8 лет назад +18

      no no it's not right or wrong, it's about improving your grammar first before doing an accent. You see, there's nothing wrong with Manglish, it's actually one of the World Englishes. The problem here is that the student insisted on using the stereotyped, posh English of the old days, and I know for a fact that even most native Brits don't even speak like that anymore. So, it's better to improve your grammar and vocabulary first :)

    • @xKADZx

      ***** Painful, perhaps, but that's what makes us unique,no? :)

    • @xKADZx
      @xKADZx 7 лет назад +1

      Well, respect is a subjective matter and it depends on the individual itself imo. Eg, some English accents are looked down upon even at their own country since that certain accent may belong to the lower class majorities.
      And pronunciation isn't actually a technical process when we're talking about World Englishes, mainly due to the interference of native language that may accentuates when conversing in English. Arguably wrong in the matter of opinion, but not in linguistic terms.

    In Malaysia,the American or English accent are considered 'rich people's language' so we viewed normal people doing those sorts of accents as stuck up and arrogant.

    • @TashaMurale
      @TashaMurale 10 лет назад +20

      True. Although I hate that being true because some of us have the accent naturally due to living overseas or just fully influenced by the American or British television growing up. I have an American accent but I'm not rich. I speak that way because I was fully influenced by American television and music growing up. I barely saw Malaysian shows or even listened to music by Malaysian artist. Only when I was around 13 I started knowing Malaysian artist and movies and shows. Even now, my accent is still there. I think accents come from how heavily influenced you are in a culture.

    I feel this struggle so much!!! I'm Malaysian and lived overseas my whole life; English was my first language and Spanish was my second. When i go back home to Malaysia people think I'm a foreigner or that I'm faking my accent (which is vaguely American but mostly indistinguishable).
    It gets to the point that I fake a Malaysian accent so people don't bug me about it hahahaha
    Foreign overseas, foreign at home 😂

  • @CreatrixTiara
    @CreatrixTiara 10 лет назад +41

    OK, I'm somewhere in between the duos.
    Born & raised in Malaysia, but being from a Bangladeshi family, and having travelled around the world, my accent is always all over the place. And NOBODY can agree on where it comes from.
    Malaysians assume my accent is British or American.
    Brits and Australians think it's Sri Lankan or Fijian or "vague South Asian country".
    Americans think it's either Mexican (?!), British, or Indian, or in one case someone asked me why I "talked like a little kid".
    And, like Tiffany, different people bring out different accents. I definitely sound way more Malaysian when I'm around family (well then the Bengali seeps through too) or my Malaysian or Singaporean friends. Trying to do it on command around my more Western or non-MY friends gets difficult.
    I lived in Australia for some years and am now based in the US. The accent thing gets EVEN WEIRDER. People from both countries claim they can hear the accent of the other country in my voice, but they only say that when I tell them I live(d) there. (Otherwise they're super blur on "why is your accent so FOREIGN"). Otherwise they're trying to pin in on EVERY OTHER COUNTRY POSSIBLE, whether in Africa or Latin America or Asia...
    ...except they NEVER believe "Malaysia".
    "You don't sound Malaysian".
    Ya, idiot, as if you've ever heard a Malaysian before! You wouldn't even have heard of the country if it wasn't for Malaysia Airlines!
    I'm not trying to put on a foreign accent, definitely not to impress people (nobody believes I'm from where I say I am anyway). But people accuse me of doing so, because I don't match their assumption, and they try to make it my fault that their assumptions are broken. (And it's ALWAYS the people who claim that they "don't have an accent" that have the strongest accents ever!)
    I HATE the question "Where is your accent from" (and similarly, "Where are you from" and "Where is your name from") because they don't actually care who I am or what my answer is. They just want to play a guessing game (I've had two people tell me explicitly that). Nama saya pun diorang tak tanya. (and it sucks that I feel like I have to write something in Malay to prove my Malaysian cred.)
    So ya, hit me lah if you want. Only if I get to hit you back for being so nosy about my accent in the first place.

      tmay x I'm laughing at you. Why are you so fucking bothered about other people imitating an American accent? Isn't that their choice, a harmless choice where no fucking individuals are in danger? You commented earlier on that people in M'sia looked up to whites that's why they want to adopt a foreign bloody accent, but I think you are the one who is really feeling insecured about yourself. If not why the fuck you can be so sensitive when someone changes the way they talk? If you are not looking up to the whites youself how the fuck you can link speaking with an accent to liking whites in lightning bloody speed?
      You are the one who feels threatened by whites and that's why you overcompensate it by calling whoever have a little tinge of culture as stuck-ups, perhaps you want to be a white but obviously you can't be therefore you convert your angst to hating the whites? Either case, you are a piece of garbage which is a disgrace to M'sia.

      Sheridan of Kishon I never said I was bothered by their 'accent', I was merely POINTING OUT AN OBSERVATION OF MINE in the comment section. what if my comments were the other way round? what if i said 'so many ppl are claiming that they sound like malaysian, but when i checked out their profile, they sound exactly like an american'. wow suddenly you're not offended anymore? face the fact that YOU are the one discriminating your own race. YOU are the one feeling insecure about your own accent. You are the one being sensitive. It's so funny though, I wrote that comment without the intention of insulting anyone. But you could come up with so many 'perceived' insults, like how you think that I thought malaysians with an accent are stuck ups? (when did i even say that?, lol). Also, when did I say I hate the whites?! you really make up a lot of stuff. those perceived insults of yours is the exact reflection of who you really are. quit being such a rude turd calling everyone a garbage and disgrace to malaysia. shame on u.

    For those of you who said that you were BORN AND RAISED IN MALAYSIA but you have an American or British accent, let me tell you something. Act white all you want, think white all you want BUT, go to America or Britain go, just go, and THEY WILL SHOW YOU WHO'S WHITE. They will know that you're faking it and only then you'll be speaking like " donno la, don't care la, whatever la, and only then you'll be looking for your MALAYSIAN colleagues to be friends with and only then you'll realised that the whites that you've worshipped don't want to be you friends unless you show some cleavage (if you're a girl) and if your super rich (if you're a guy). Peace.

      Senior Zombie Slayer Oh so you have "spanish blood"? From who? Your great great great great great grandfather? I guess that's what makes you feel psychologically "somewhat different" thus creating the "somewhat english like accent", but you're no different my friend. You just think you are, admit it. And like I said, your foreign friends won't tell you! And ME look up to whites? I'm the only one who's brave enough to ask a white person "When are you going back to your country?" Everytime I see them so NO.

      Brown Balls You are shit in arguments. You like assuming things don't you? My grandmother was a spanish lady. everything else you said was just bullshit. You're just a sad and sadistic person.

      Senior Zombie Slayer and my grandmother is an African lady. So I look black. I also have this weird somewhat African English accent. Look the point is, you being born and raised in a country e.g Singapore but you speak with a totally different accent, that makes you a fake. People get their accent from their environment, NOT television. If you're from Singapore and you speak Singlish or Singapore Standard English, that makes you REAL as fuck. But if you speak with a "somewhat English accent" that makes you FAKE as fuck. Your accent shows your IDENTITY, you have NO IDENTITY. I guess you're just not proud of being a Singaporean. You are the one who look up to whites I guess. After all, why not speak with a "Somehat African English accent" like me :) why must you pick "Somewhat ENGLISH accent"??? ;)

    • @brownballs5043
      @brownballs5043 9 лет назад

      But wait, I guess IF you had been spending your childhood in the UK, you will get that "somewhat English like accent" naturally. Then, what I'm saying doesn't apply to you. Also, IF you're that weird mixed-race kid from International School then this does not apply to you either.

    I sound British. I can't help it, it's not something I pretend to do - I just sound British -- or Scottish (Quite possibly a tad Irish) when I'm pissed. I shall blame that on the endless marathon of Harry Potter when I was younger and the Scottish bit -- God knows where I pick that up - Honestly, it's not fun - people kept thinking either I was born and raise in England or I've gone to school there. Nope, KL born and breed, never went to England before. I think it could happen to people who were exposed to certain shows when they were younger or as they startered to learn the language - You sorta just... Store it in your memory bank or something. It's not weird, my cousin sounded like he's from Texas -- He's never been.

    I will have my Malaysian English accent when I'm talking to people who find English difficult when speaking. One time one of my classmate who always speak in English came and talk to me. She stare at me when I speak in a total 180° change.
    I have another one. So one of my Indian classmate thought I don't know English and ask me to take a 'chair' and speak the words longerrr as if I can't understand him. I pretend to look at him like I was confused and only replier with an 'okay'. We barely knew each other bc everyone in our year were to change new classes. So when we have our first exam and I got a 95%, the boy who talked to me have his eyes budge out like he can't even believe it.

    I'm white and I was born and raised in London. I've lived in Singapore for a few years now, and here's what I think about people who think they have somehow acquired either American or British accents without prior training or living (for a long time) in England or the US, you don't fool us, we see right through it. Now I'm not racist, my wife is Singaporean and I have three kids, all of whom are bi-accented, so I know for a fact that it's possible, it's just that people who claim that they have an "angmoh" accent usually don't. Since I married my wife, she has been to regular lessons from a dialect coach, and honestly, I can hardly notice her Singaporean accent when she puts on her English accent, although she doesn't because we both think it's weird. Learning an accent takes years, many years, and I've heard people like LKY speak, and they speak very good English, but Singaporeans don't seem to understand that he's not speaking in an "angmoh" accent, just the Singaporean accent without the characteristic cadences and with proper grammar. So please people, before you humiliate yourself, please at least state how you got the accent... Anyone who thinks I'm not in a position to say these, well don't, because I'm a proud Singaporean. And P.S None of the accents in the video were British or American... If you want to do it, learn it, otherwise don't mock it. Respect our culture as much as I respect Singapore please.

    • @acerolaberries3092
      @acerolaberries3092 9 лет назад +13

      If you're NOT racist why do you need to start it with "I'm white" and at the same time kept posting the SAME post twice!
      You are racist, you just don't want to APPEAR to be so thus the pre-empt "Now I'm not racist...". excuse.
      Why, to cover your ground first before you spew?
      You respect S'pore is your business, TMT is Malaysian, so how about you take your bs and shove it elsewhere and learn to respect M'sians as well! You show no respect by simply deducing it to mocking British/America accents , then what say you about that?
      What is mind-boggling is - How come you deduced that people are mocking your gwai-low accent and / or this video is about mocking it ? The fact that you failed to grasped the gist of this clip goes to prove, while high education etc from Ivy leagues do have their merits, however, if one is lacking in cognitive dissonance NO amount of education can help. It's most likely a genetic thing...or due to aging.. or in your case - both ?
      Only those who still suffers from Post-Colonial-Hangover (PCH) which is rampant in places like S'pore will still holds White-affiliation to the pedestal. Many of them are whitewashed. They are those whose mind is still trapped in the subservient past.
      Many of us here learned English not because we like it, more like our parents made us learned it due to western hegemony, which btw, is dwindling. Personally, I'd say let's focus more on Chinese language nowadays, as they are the emerging superpower, you can keep your UK/US western accent to yourself (which I don't know what is sooo desirable about it since it is on it's own a second hand language, a derived language, ie, borrowed much from Latin, Greek and other cultures). Only desperadoes are SO PARTICULAR about non-essentials like accents. For others with or without is non-issue.

      before you start commenting on how imperfect the american/british accent was in this video, i suggest you WORK ON your grammar first! And, you're just another troll on youtube, trust me, I CAN SEE IT RIGHT THROUGH. Also, I dont see how this video mocked the british/american culture. Accent is not part of a culture, it's universal and constantly changing. There's no specific accurate accent for a country.

    • @flyingc4pyb4r4
      @flyingc4pyb4r4 9 лет назад +1

      acerola berries that man was just trying to tell us to respect the British or American culture, and in this case he's referring to the accents. He used Singapore/Singaporeans to show us the obvious differances when Singaporeans try to speak in either the American or British accents. In no way he is trying to compare Malaysia and Singapore. Calm yo tits will ya. Your comment was just trying so hard to blatantly shun Singapore and denying any fact that there is anything wrong with Malaysia. Before you start whining, let me just say that i do not hate both of these countries (actually i don't even care). Seriously man, you sound like one of those stupid nationalists. Tbh, your comment was all over the place, like you don't even know wtf you're talking abt and you just typed whatever that came into your mind. So pls, just chill. When you read smth, don't understand it under one perspective ok? No hate here so pls don't get me wrong.

      Blake Vanderbilt Sir what u said is so true I couldn't agree more! In Malaysia when someone is trying to speak in proper English most locals would always/straight away assume he/she is speaking in a British/American "slang" (in local context "slang" always mean accent)! however, there're so many types of English accents in the world it isn't easy to fake them. some mocking just did this badly. I'm a self taught American English speaker. i've started a year ago listening to online tutorial/natural speech thus helping me a lot in trying to get a grasp of American English n knowing the differences of British/American english. The pronunciation, stressed & unstressed, rhythm, contractions & reductions etc really takes time to learn unless you're moving to a native English speaking country that would probably improve your speaking skills tremendously.

    I'm a mixed race Malaysian who adopts an accent. I don't think I'm faking it because it comes naturally. Unless under certain circumstances where I have to use Manglish for conveying a message for Malaysians who are not very articulate or fluent in English, I can say that my mental and verbal language comes with an accent. I guess it's also probably I adopt them from the Western movies and TV shows, you can also say that I'm kinda "westernized."
    There's really nothing to be ashamed of if you speak with an accent. It doesn't make you any less of a Malaysian. Why do we care so much about what other people think of us?

    This is agitating! No one understands this feeling, unless you don't sound like a typical Malaysian. Just because I'm Chinese Malaysian, people expect me to have a typical Chinese accent!?
    The typical chinese would go like "Why ah? U ah? Got like the Australian slang one!?" What do you mean I have an Australian accent? People think that I'm faking or imitating Aussies!
    The thing is I don't have an accent nor an English wannabe. I admit that I do pronounce some words as Australian, like mate as 'mite' and a few words emphasising the vowel 'a' in 'ae'.
    I don't understand why can't malaysians understand! Plus British is not an accent! Whenever my friends introduce me to someone they go like what's with his accent? They jokingly says that I'm English or Australian. One Brit ask me whether if I'm English and I once got called by the school's principal asking if I studied abroad! Hates goes like what's with the British accent you British wannabe! I always tell them "British is not an accent and this is not one of any of the English accents, but Malaysian! I was born in Greater London, that's just it!" But I'm not , I just joke with them.

    I love this one is still my all time favorite.
    Accents are just something you kind of use to relate to the person of the country. Of course, if executed well, it will help in communication.
    But like if the person kind of knows you from back then, is it so hard to switch it back?
    Love the spin of humor on this and the copi soo soo part. LOL!
