Asylums are creepy abandoned, but there is a former asylum in Michigan that is now a federal building. You can tell from the outside it was an asylum because it's the way asylums were built. Inside you can tell too just by the layout and it having connecting buildings underground with pipes and low ceilings. Currently running former asylums are still creepy too.

Seeing the shelter stuff, makes it feel like it was an alternate reality where they prepared for war, but it never happened...
Then you realize, that IS our reality. We really did prepare for the end of the world, for a war to destroy all life. We had plans to try & keep people alive, and in some way, rebuild. Luckily- it has all been left to decay, because we didn't need it.
May we never need resources for such an event.

I've seen some of these shelters as a child. In addition to cots and medical supplies, they had sanitation and radiation kits. Also, 55 gallon drums of purified water, tins of crackers and hard candy. The drums had plastic liners and would double as latrines once they were empty. I think most of these shelters were cleaned out in the 1970s and 80s. This one looks like it's been completely picked over, there's nothing left but the cots. If you still see the the "Civilian Defense" placard these days, there's a good chance the shelter is still there.

Theory about the poop step: feral cats middening. They poop in an open space as kind of a way to mark a space as their hunting grounds. Makes sense that there would be a lot since one marks it, then the next is like nope this is my space. Cats can be territorial creatures. Don't judge my cat knowledge, I work at an animal shelter.

    • @frazzledude

Cats usually don’t mark their territory with feces. Instead they use urine, and unneutered male cats will spray. Wild or feral cats tend to bury their feces to make it harder for predators to track them. That is why domesticated cats bury their feces in a litter box. My guess is that all the poop on those stairs is from raccoons in that building.

I run a historical archive blog of the US Civil Defense program. It's amazing how you can find shelters from the National Fallout Shelter Survey and Marking Program (NFSSMP) in such a diverse amount of places. My middle school was a shelter. My mom's old apartment building was one, as well. There are caves out west (Arizona, I believe) that also were shelters.
There's a lot of misunderstanding about the NFSSMP, but its still definitely a unique part of American history that we can see if we just look hard enough.

"Ether and Mask" would be anesthetic. I was anesthetized with Ether when I had my tonsils removed at age 4 in the 60's. The mask (yes, I remember it) was put over my face and ether was poured or sprayed onto it. I didn't go under until I was told to breath out. (I guess I was told that because I wouldn't have comprehended "exhale"). Then I was out and the classic doctor and nurse chatter became a weird dream. "So Gladys, how was your weekend?"
