I remember the anticipation of Day 5, with England being in the incredibly rare position of chasing a win against the Windies. That was sheer magic from Greenidge, and brilliant also from the underrated Larry Gomes. That West Indies side from the late 70s through the entire 80s was untouchable. Set 342 for victory, and they didn't even need Sir Viv!
That defeat hurt. It was never easy to beat the great West Indies teams of the 70's - 80's but to lose in this fashion - wow. Greenidge was magnificent.
)_____As you can see, England dominated the 1st innings & they also went into the 2nd innings very strongly. it appears that England thought that they were goignt o win this test I can remember the smile on England's captain's face when he declared. My memory of this match is that, from very early on in their second innings, it was never seriously in doubt that the WIndies would win, such was Greenidge's dominance. He put England's attack to the sword.
@@abhijitmajumdar3277 Thanks for confirming my view that Richards was the greatest. Few players have achieved a test average over 50 and certainly not playing the way he did.
I felt certain it would be a draw. I knew England wouldn’t bowl this great side out in 5 and a half hours, nor did I think West Indies would chase down that total either, astonishment…
Didn't realise Foster had a dropped chance. Pringle had a shocker. Miller had no control and Willis suffered from the commentators curse. Could the bowlers have got through IVA after he had annihilated them at Old Trafford a few weeks before? Very unlikely.

Even though it was probably the greatest chasing innings I've ever seen, I still have nightmares about it almost - what? - 40 years later!
Thank you very much publisher.another great match.

4:22 "Greenidge hasn't had much of a series so far. This might be his day"
Understatement of the decade there.

@ Randy, it's the word of God bro. True words
❤Precisely well said and well OBSERVED.

Super innings from a super cricketer.
People often talk about Gower's declaration as though Bob Willis and Neil Foster might have added 75 for the last wicket!
The sound of that bat...!
WOW.. !
What a great chase! Infact greatest chase in the history of test cricket. Even better than WI against Australia, 418 runs.
Greenidge was a complete batsman even no less dangerous than king richard
Nowhere near as consistent as Viv - that was the difference.
@@Wally-H greenidge's test record 108 matches,7558 runs,avg 44+.richards record 121 matches,8571 runs,avg 50+.Now it's upto u to make judgement

@@Wally-H plz go through the innings of CJ Greenidge, watch carefully,u will see his arrogance, hard hitting and fast scoring rate.
@@abhijitmajumdar3277 Nobody said he wasn't a class player but I could point you in the direction of many such innings played by Richards.
Great cricket in those times
Yes indeed

I telly scored on the entire series. This looked like it would be a tame draw but for an incredible 200 by GG.

Still got my notes somewhere but pretty sure the first 4 overs were maidens.
England had their chances all through the game but lose it in the end. i am quite sure that they thought that they were going to win this game
W I in T20 mode
over 5 runs a over to win Bazball in 1984 :🤣🤣
@user-ix3lk8nw5r The WI played 21st century cricket in 1984. That’s why they were almost impossible to beat for four or five years
The story was Gower was forced to declare by the Selectors when he was prepared to bat on. Not that it made much difference.
