The VW one supposedly vibrates the windshield. Hilariously, my Golf GTE is a hybrid and if i floor the pedal in e-mode, then switch to gas, the hockey puck in the windscreen comes on before the engine does...
That is exactly what it does. It's just a weight connected to the windshield frame underneath the cowl. They do also offer another variant, which actually consists of a speaker in the exhaust system. That one is used in high-horsepower Diesel models (and some turbo gas engine cars as well).
it's just coming out with less energy since more is being harvested to do silly things like burn fuel more completely rather than announce to other drivers how inadequate you feel about your genitals
0:40, the same amount of exhaust goes out of the car however the turbo acts as a secondary muffler and that’s why it’s more quiet, the car doesn’t reuse exhaust to but it back it it just uses it to spin the hot side of a turbo and compress air on the cold side of the turbo.
A turbo will cause more exhaust to come out of the motor, because it is using exhaust gas to force more air into the engine. More air in means more air out.
That’s funny, this idea was actually in the short story “The Marching Morons” by E. C. Cornbluth published in 1951. The only difference was the cars couldn’t go very fast so in addition to loud engine sounds, they also blew high powered air on the driver and passenger.

VW actually already did this in the 90s. Back then it was called "first generation 5-cylinder TDI without sound deadening". One of the nicer ways to turn dinosaurs into heat and noise.
I know this is not remotely the point, but when talking about the V8 engine of the BMW, you showed the innards of a V6 and as a automotive engineer, that kinda triggert me a little :D
He also said that turbos reduce the amount of exhaust going out... I could've sworn that when you up the boost you also up the waste products in direct relation... but you know, who am I to argue...
@ladawg81 It acts as a muffler, as it is an object that sits in the exhaust stream. There are a few turbo sporty-cars that just don't have mufflers because of this, and I remove mufflers on turbo cars I own. They don't become obnoxiously loud.
One of the most jarring examples of this for me was getting a lift from someone in a diesel Ford Ranger - with the window up it sounded like a nice petrol engine, with the window down you could still hear the petrol engine sound but at the same time the lower frequency grumble of the actual diesel exhaust note, which was not even remotely close to the sound inside the vehicle.
I had a 2015 Mustang Ecoboost, and you could disable that Active Sound system by pulling a fuse in the fuse box. It was really amazing the difference it made to the sound inside the car.
This whole video, from the shitty yet enjoyable bad attempts at making the logo noises (3:38) to the segway to HelloFresh with the "And you know what I put in my mouth last night?" (4:54) was beautiful and I love it. Please never change and pay that writer more.
If they are going to play fake engine noise into the cabin then where's the option for active noise cancelling of engine, wind, and tire noise. (Or atleast muffling it to less noticable levels) And for safety have the system stop cancelling when something like a siren is detected. And obviously low speed noise makers for pedestrian safety.
Acura's "Active Sound Control" is exactly that. ASC is disabled in sport mode so the driver can hear the engine better. This system works only on low pitches, so it's not going to cancel a siren.
Rolls Royce has this, especially in the back. You can litterally hear the mechanical clock ticking, even cruising at 100km/h on cobbled stone or dirt road. No vibration noises either, no tyre noise and even the aircon fans are silent on full blast.
When cars had round air filter housings that sat on top of the carburetor on top of engine, especially V8 engines, hot rod folks would take the air filter lid off, flip it over, and put it back on. This did two things: 1) Defeated the temperature control on the intake air which allowed more colder/denser air into the engine (more air equals more fuel and power). 2) Allowed one to hear that great V8 engine sound sucking in gobs of fuel air mix.
The Mustang Mach E has a system to turn on and off synthetic noise. I value handling ability over noise. If it can tackle freeway ramps at 60-70 mph without significant body roll, I'm happy.
I have always considered the fact that cars are getting quieter to be a great thing. It is annoying as hell that carmakers are deciding to add on fake noise onto cars. This is why I can't wait for electric cars to reach critical mass and be good and cheap enough for me to get one.
Even if electric cars become a majority they will likely be mandated to produce sound so that pedestrians can hear them. This is just like trucks are regulated to produce sound when they back up so people are made aware of them.
Millions of third world people will have to be poisoned by lithium mining to make that happen. But hey, at least your sensitive ass ears will get a rest
I'm driving a BEV (Skoda Enyaq) and I can tell you: If there is no sound, you can't distinguish between going 10 or 40 kph. Synthetic sounds on the inside make it much easier to "driving by hearing" as in common gas driven cars.
While only slightly related, I initially *hated* the Formula E cars in Forza 6 for the same reason. All of the audio cues for speed were gone. Racetracks are already poor visual references for speed, I had to turn the cheater line back on! 😂
Anatomically speaking, the line dividing the skull in a cranial base and a facial skeleton is a virtual line drawn from the upper edge of the orbit (eye socket) to the upper edge of the out ear porus. Meaning that the ear is actually part of of face.
Yeah, it’s interesting to what degree things get “engineered“ to meet customer expectations. How weird am I to have gone on a Wikipedia binge about this before?
Youll get really pissed when you learn about CVTs and how they are a great technology saddled with absolute clowns failing to properly explain to people what they are and then covering up that failure by making them operate inefficiently to meet incorrect expectations. CVTs, literally are just more efficient, mostly due to their variability, and because car companies didn't want to put any budget into explaining that to people, they made them fake being gears.
Until recently I actually made the sound insulation for the Toyota, Lexus, bmw, and gmc vehicle lines. Around the engine is ~1 inch think fibreglass panels with holes cut out for wires and pipes and whatnot, and then around the wheel wells, on the floor, and in the door panels there is a thick recycled fabric material. When I worked in the factory, we used to take the fabric panels and cover our heads with them and you couldn’t even hear the super loud water nets or presses, so yeah, cars are pretty quiet now.
Did you just say that STUUUSTUSTUSTUSTUUUU PPSSSSssshhhhh doesn't sound cool???? My guy, that's the coolest sound ever (referencing the V8 twin turbo part lol)
I was wondering about that as well, to me there's nothing more exciting than the sound of turbochargers sucking air kicking in. And a V8 alone can't be that bad, right?
@@xmtxx The noise is really a lot better than the exhaust of a car, especially when accelerating from a stop or up a hill. You can barely hear it over other noises like wind noise and tyre noise at a distance anyway.
They have external speakers that play a hum or an artificial sound. You can actually tell which brand is coming up based off their sound, it's like their own signature lol. But aside from that, you can also hear the motor whine or transistor whine as well. It's like an old TV turning on. It's like EEEEEEEEEEE, quite high pitched but it's hard to miss. You can hear that on top of all those sounds so technically, even if there weren't an external speaker, that's another option unless you're hard of hearing I guess. Also, for reference, I'm 38 so it's not one of those young people sound alert things.
Car sound design is an interesting rabbit hole. For example how much time they spend on the sound of a closing door, or how they put flaps and resonators in the exhaust to make the car sound like it doesn't have an exhaust to begin with
@@adog3129 Just call it "Active Sound Cancellation", which really means "[Active Sound] Cancellation", but people will think it means "Active [Sound Cancellation]".
When I hear a car with an exhaust that's intentionally made louder, I imagine that the driver is a guy who has a small penis and feels insecure about it.
If it's a good sounding car, it's amazing. Most are not good sounding. The exceptions are a reason to keep on living, just to hear them. Long live the LFA.
I wonder if there is a setting (no doubt deep down beyond three "Advanced Settings" buttons) in these cars that would allow a person who doesn't need such coddling (and would therefore prefer their car as quiet as possible) to turn off the added sound. I'll probably never know, because I'm the kind who just wants to get from A to B, so I'd buy the Camry, or even a Corolla. Funny story: About 30 years ago, my husband and I were considering a particular car (I no longer remember the brand, but it was a fairly ordinary but new car, and had a manual transmission, which we preferred). He test drove it one day, and then I test drove it with the same salesman the next day. At one point while I was accelerating, a "ding" came from the dashboard. I asked, "What's that?" The salesman explained that it was telling me I should shift gears now for best performance. My immediate response was, "How do I turn it off?" The salesman laughed and said that my husband had asked the exact same questions when he drove it. Apparently the answer is that no, you can't turn it off. We did not buy that car.
I don't get it. I drive a 2012 Ford Focus SE with a fuel-efficient inline 4, and that thing is loud enough for me. Loud car snobbery is no better than loud motorcycle snobbery, and I think almost everyone can agree that a motorcycle doesn't need to be heard from 5 miles away.
While I am generally in agreement with you, being a former motorcycle rider I will say. You want a loud bike as a safety device because so many car drivers seem incapable of seeing motorcycles. The noise helps to let them know that you exist.
If the motorcycle is not only invisible but also silent, how would anyone know that it is there? I'd want an electric motorcycle to make sound, such as by using a really harsh sounding vvvf driver for the motor.
Half as Interesting always provides good, five-minute entertainment, but that segment recreating audio logos is some of the best fifteen-second entertainment I've ever seen.
I can't be the only person who DOESN'T want to hear the engine when I'm driving, right? I'd much rather listen to music without the car actively trying to drown it out.
Lol I know, right? Cause no one ever thought to look at their speedometer to see how fast their going. Judging by how fast people go down my street, I'd say that unfortunately they actually don't look at it. Officer: do you know how fast you were going? Driver: what is this 'fast' concept you're talking about?
When I first heard of this Active Sound BS back when it came out, I thought it an absolutely hilariously stupid concept. But that signature sound for EVs is pretty neat. I'd still want my little EV roar like a big bad V8 wolf when I bean it instead of a silent 'Whoosh'...
That opening joke about Michael Barbaro had me DEAD! I did not see it coming but the moment I heard "From the" my brain fill in the rest just as you said it. 10/10
Well, imagine all the engine sounds in a top tier racing simulator. Those are all pre-recorded and then spliced to active during certain events, and can even manipulate itself to cut out and play other noises (like if your car stalls, or something in the engine breaks). We've come a long way from "ey bud, just Rev the engine and we'll just loop it" like they did in gta San Andreas, for instance.
What’s even crazier is with the introduction of CVT in cars the gear shifting you feel is programmed in because people thought something was wrong with the car without it 😂
Still not sure how those cinderblocks change engine noises, but trust you’re just laying the groundwork for your forthcoming cinderblock video. Thank you for your intrepid research into those cinderblocks! WHAT ARE THEY HIDING!? WHAT DO THEY KNOW!?
Reminds me of the short story The Marching Morons, by CM Kornbluth. In the story, people were tricked into buying slow, efficient cars that played loud engine noises and blew wind in your face with fans when you accelerated.

Since it seems that the world is shifting more and more out of engines (not yet, haha), i'm happy that we already have an Engine Simulator and a better version coming. It's going to be a great throwback to the times that engines still existed for those people who want to hear these roars on racetracks raced by EVs. The cool thing is, you can modulate the power of a motor and run Engine Simulator software in order to determine how much torque it should produce and combine that with the sound synthesis and you get an EV that acts just like an engine with manual or any transmission you want as long as the output doesn't exceed motor capabilities in which case it'll just not work up to those high torques, but up to the torque of the electric motor. Can't wait to roleplay gear shifting in an EV haha!

I’m not sure where you’re getting the numb steering thing from. That’s the first time I’ve ever heard anyone not praise the e9x steering. You may be mistaking it for the F8x’s electronic steering. But again, we’re talking about sound here, so I digress.
I don’t have 8 hours to list all the cars faster than any of the cars you just mentioned. And next years will be faster than this year’s cars. There’s probably minivans being produced today that are faster than 10-20 year old M cars. Besides, accelerating super fast from red light to red light became super lame after like high school. I’m almost 40.
Nobody has ever laughed at a Porsche 356 because it’s slow. Or pretty much any other classic. Yes. Of course they are slow by today’s standards. But they’re still cool.
00:37 "...which means less exhaust comes out...". I assure you, the same amount of exhaust does come out with or without a turbocharger.
Thanks, i was looking to make sure i didnt have to write this myself
even more actually, what with boost and all that
it's just coming out with less energy since more is being harvested to do silly things like burn fuel more completely rather than announce to other drivers how inadequate you feel about your genitals
debatable
@@bricktown3156 "debatable" as if the turbocharger makes the exhaust fumes somehow lose mass on exit 💀💀💀
0:40, the same amount of exhaust goes out of the car however the turbo acts as a secondary muffler and that’s why it’s more quiet, the car doesn’t reuse exhaust to but it back it it just uses it to spin the hot side of a turbo and compress air on the cold side of the turbo.
and it gets even quieter when you add a particulate filter too
And noise regulations
Yes
A turbo will cause more exhaust to come out of the motor, because it is using exhaust gas to force more air into the engine. More air in means more air out.
You are using a lot of the exhaust energy to spin a turbine, so the gas coming out the tailpipe has less pressure, less heat, less everything.
That’s funny, this idea was actually in the short story “The Marching Morons” by E. C. Cornbluth published in 1951. The only difference was the cars couldn’t go very fast so in addition to loud engine sounds, they also blew high powered air on the driver and passenger.

Sam needs a trigger warning for engineers at the start of the video.
@ladawg81 It acts as a muffler, as it is an object that sits in the exhaust stream. There are a few turbo sporty-cars that just don't have mufflers because of this, and I remove mufflers on turbo cars I own. They don't become obnoxiously loud.
I am impressed that you brought in a lion to get a purely realistic roar sound. Impressive.
Mad respect to the writer who managed to get Sam to reenact the log sounds.
3:48 BEST!
3:33 The section about not getting banished for copyright violations is hilarious.
The sound recreations at 3:40 is next level. Top notch work!
Which fuse? Did the radio still work? I have a 15 Ecoboost, and I love it, but I HATE the 4 cylinder sound.

If they are going to play fake engine noise into the cabin then where's the option for active noise cancelling of engine, wind, and tire noise. (Or atleast muffling it to less noticable levels)
And for safety have the system stop cancelling when something like a siren is detected.
And obviously low speed noise makers for pedestrian safety.
Acura's "Active Sound Control" is exactly that. ASC is disabled in sport mode so the driver can hear the engine better. This system works only on low pitches, so it's not going to cancel a siren.
there are cars with active noise cancellation/layered passive noise cancellation
So far, they don't seem to have encountered anyone who wants quiet...

Yikes
The Mustang Mach E has a system to turn on and off synthetic noise.
I value handling ability over noise. If it can tackle freeway ramps at 60-70 mph without significant body roll, I'm happy.
I actually already knew this, but I still liked this video.
I have always considered the fact that cars are getting quieter to be a great thing. It is annoying as hell that carmakers are deciding to add on fake noise onto cars. This is why I can't wait for electric cars to reach critical mass and be good and cheap enough for me to get one.
some gas cars are whisper quiet
hell some diesel cars sound like bkthing
They're adding it to the inside of the car though, so the driver gets all the noise they want without annoying people outside as much
Even if electric cars become a majority they will likely be mandated to produce sound so that pedestrians can hear them. This is just like trucks are regulated to produce sound when they back up so people are made aware of them.
Millions of third world people will have to be poisoned by lithium mining to make that happen. But hey, at least your sensitive ass ears will get a rest
I have no issues with fake engine sounds, but some cars have a super synthetic sound that screams fake.
Imagine starting your car and instead of vroom vroom you hear one of the most famous mkvie soundtracks of our time
I'm driving a BEV (Skoda Enyaq) and I can tell you: If there is no sound, you can't distinguish between going 10 or 40 kph.
