- The sneaker industry has tripled in the last 10 years, now accounting for almost half of global footwear sales. They are a fashion phenomenon.
Lynnie, 26, owns 80 pairs and still wants more. She travels to New York, the birthplace of the sneaker scene, and charts its rise from the footwear of basketball players, breakdancers and rappers to the defining fashion item of our age and an asset class unto itself, with its own stock exchange (StockX) and collectors parting with up to $500k for a single pair.
How did it happen?
And how can the planet possibly keep up?
Every pair of sneakers produced emits the same amount of C02 as a 10 mile drive - and the industry is pumping out over a billion pairs a year. She wants to know why she - and we - can’t stop buying them.

Sneaker culture is seriously the dumbest thing. Wow.
Everyone has things there into. I mean I'm sure there's something that you like that materialistic and a bit self centered but also makes you happy.
The real idiots are the ones who bought into the hype, if there is an industry behind a culture it would be hard for kids to grow up and not be manipulated by it. Its pure EVIL. There was a movement called "stop making stupid people famous" (kayne kim KOL type), obviously that didnt go too well for marketing and it died pretty quickly :)
That is why I prefer to have only one pair of sneakers to exercise and two other casual ones, because they really pollute and it isn't necessary to have a closet full of footwear.

In regard to the ill effects on the environment, 'fast fashion' is likely (I don't KNOW) just as bad, or worse. Think of the cheap shoe store chains - or clothing like H&M, all that cheap stuff people just get 'for the season' or that 'trend'.

Its embarrassing that a company that would sell shoes at this price. Its depressing that people that amount of joy, satisfaction and success in a pair of shoes that will take multiple generations and some for these to break down. This exposing our insecurity about another person wearing something you already are, which is certainly not exclusive to sneakers or clothing is helping multiple industries dupe the gullibility consumers in buying more over priced bs. They're just trainers. I have three pairs, thats heaps. I love my leather pair, not for image sake but I can wear them in the rain and protect my feet and my arthritic knees.
Recycling in the industry is marketing not a genuine effort. Make all of them recyclable. Adidas is a company that can afford it and their rep was talking as they're almost a unintentional victim of the situation, they helped to create the market. Its disgusting that companies that make plastic fashion are not taking accountability for the mess they created.
