The only complete walkthrough I am aware of.
I hope you like it, enjoy...
... and please leave a like if you want to, thanks ;)
A game for the C64, Amiga, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, PC(Dos), Apple II, Amstrad CPC and the Macintosh. It was written by Steve Cartwright and came out in 1986 - published by Activision.
When I bought the tape for C64 in 1986 I was a teenager and immidiately liked the games setting, idea, look and feel.
Your modem call to some bbs gets interdicted. Next the FBI asks you for help and minutes later you control a remote robot in a high security building. Sounds unlikely? Hey, it's a game ;)
The manual explains some basic information to start into the game. But not much more.
First thing you normally do will be the intro quiz. In a nutshell they ask you about the block wiring diagram of this remote setup. The manual helps you with that. Funny thing is: understanding the block diagram helps you with the game too. Once you got the quit you receive a code and next time you can easily skip it.
This is where the game (and timer) really begins.
You see 4 monitors showing static noise.
    You have to find out
    - how to get useful pictures on the monitors
    - how to move around the robot
    - how to not get detected by camera or guard otherwise the infamous Annihilator comes and stomps you to dust (a must see! ;)
    - how to find and open the 4 small safes
    - how to steal the evil plans from the big safe
After learning to move around, the first thing you need is a map of the building including the guards inspection path. And information about the security cameras which are active one after each other (each one maybe for a second).
You also will need a timeline that tells you where the guard is at one particular point in time (see end of video for this). The guard will do consecutive walks, but it's easy to calculate his position in later rounds because one full walk takes exactly 5:00 minutes, so that's the offset.
I own the original C64 Tape. The Amiga Version is identical and I played this on an emulated Amiga (WinUae) on 16. December 2012.
Hope you enjoy it! (Yes I uploaded the screen recording after 5 years - don't ask why - real life got in the way ;)
If you want to give it a try I think the C64 Version is very good and the Amiga Version plays exactly the same. A PC MS-Dos version also exists.
Playing the game I noticed one little difference between C64 and Amiga Version. In the C64 version a camera will only spot you if you are visible in the exact moment when it switches to the cam, but not when you move into the picture as the cam is still active. The Amiga Camera Guard will spot you in the latter case too.
Hope you enjoy! Please leave a like if you want to.
    Stefan

Imagine having no manual and always getting crushed.
Glad to finally see this game beaten. Thanks for that.

I figured out most of the UI by trial and error, so I knew about the cams, but I had no idea how to bypass. I was young and didn't understand any English.
Watched a run of “Hacker 1“ ages ago, but couldn't find anything on 2. Greatly appreciate it.

I played a lot of this game as a kid, but lost interest when the systems started falling apart and controlling the robot became hard, plus I really didn't know the objective. I tried to override the vault cameras but never got it right. Nice to see someone actually finished it.

Luckily we have RUclips and people like Steve to show us how it was done, I gave up too back in the day.

I was too young to understand any of it. I drove the robot around until I got caught every time. Then turned it off and played Dig Dug or something.

One thing I'd like to point out here that was not noted in this walkthrough.
Initially when you play through the game blind, you are expected to take the Classified Document out of the vault first and attempt to exit the facility to the south with it. When you do this the Feds will intercept your connection as they did in the ending here, however they will inform you of the true identity of your contact and will ask you to go back to the vault and make the exchange, putting the real document back. If you played the original Hacker game you'll know Magma are a very evil company involved in dangerous drilling operations that would have seen Australia in great danger among their plans for world domination and thus the feds telling you that your contact was from them should set off alarm bells, the fact the MRUs here resemble the SRUs used in Magma's underground transit lines should also help you understand this. Interesting you can SKIP the classified document phase and take the decoy out anyway!

I was masochist to this game, to the point that I too draw map, then for pixel perfect ambitions, I challenged myself to replicate the map exactly 1:1 in Koala Painter, then make a print version on a 1525 printer. Of course with that much dedication I was able to complete and finish that bugger. I actually made it through contrary of Hacker 1 that I never found the perfect run to complete it.

I loved this game, which came with my brand new Amiga at the time - but never had the stamina or patience to work out the final phase when all the equipment failed. Very well done, sir! (And to anyone else reading this who completed this game!)

One of the coolest games I played on the C64. Through some divine intervention, I blindly guessed the "Blue 1" code for the first cabinet, so my path to victory was a lot shorter ;)

Thanks for posting this. Really liked the game but could never finish it. I found it too difficult to do after your equipment begins to fail. Fun to be reminded of the pitfalls the devs had for players. I remember it took a while fir me to work out the 4 vault cameras were looking at the same door! It was a really tense game.

I remember this game from when I was a kid. It seems I'm maybe a few years younger. I think I was about 7, we had this for the Amiga. I don't think I had the guide, it was just a disk sitting in the box that I put in the computer one day. I messed around with it a lot, and it was interesting, but I never got very far. I still remember the old "login" and how it put you through that test. I think I just banged my way through it. Thanks for showing me there was a point to this game besides driving the robot around and getting smashed.

I remember drawing a map and marking the camera locations and the times when those cameras were active, and also tracked the guard. Despite doing all that I still could never finish this game. Great playthrough!

AWESOME! I thought I was the only MASOCHIST to beat this game!! I had the C64 version and remember vividly using oldschool Math class GRAPH PAPER to construct a MAP of the game, making it pixel perfect to the TGS. After completing the MAP, I had to then explore each area using the live cameras to add the camera numbers to each room, hallway and the areas they covered, then followed the GUARD his route by watching the pre-recording to see where he turns, then lastly, the VAULT numbers and the rooms with the switches to get the CODE and the VAULT ACCESS.

Thanks for your comment. I also played the C64 version back in the days. Just did this walkthrough on the Amiga Version as it's a little nicer but still identical. Like you I did the map research myself. Glad you liked it =)

@@SammYLightfooD I LOVE this AMIGA version of HACKER II. I played the C64 version and did EVERYTHING you did here. I bought MATH GRAPH PAPER to compile my MAP, ROUTE, CAMERA ROOMS and CABINET CODES. Anyone who has played this will know that you will NEED a map by the time the TRS fails completely, you are forced to go blind. If you have an ACCURATE BITMAP like mine, you go move the MRU all around the complex at ease because EACH BLOCK on my GRAPH PAPER MAP represented a single move of the MRU. I beat the game but required 2 complete playthroughs. I fell for the DECOY vault paper and didn't realize it was all a "WORK" and you were stealing from the U.S. Government the whole time (SPOILERS!?). So, I then had to play it the second time knowing that this whole time, you are ACTUALLY inside a U.S. Military installation, and NOT a FOREIGN ENEMY COMPLEX...
I would be interested if you STILL had any of you maps, like you displayed at the end. I can see everything, I am just CURIOUS if you have the originals and would be willing to scan them in, even if using a smart phone to scan/convert to a .PDF file. Plenty of free apps for smart devices to use the camera and scan/convert to .PDF....
Thanks again for the COMPLETE playthrough. If anyone is curious... there is NO difference between this AMIGA version and the C64 version, all but GRAPHICS and SOUND... the playthrough applies to the C64 version as well. The CAMERAS, GUARD ROUTE, VAIULT and CABINET ACCESS is all the same...
For example... Where did you find the (German?) article on HACKER II that has that GREAT map at the very end of this video. I know a lot of people who played this did what you and I did... HAVE to construct our own MAPS, ROUTES and NOTES for EVERYTHING in this game, but it looks like that GERMAN article has some PROFESSIONALY done write-up on it, including a PROPER map, route, access codes etc...
REMINDS me for my FAVORITE retro game... KORONIS RIFT (Atari 800xl). I had NO IDEA after all these years, SOMEONE out there in the GREAT RETRO GAMING COMMUNITY... somehow decompiled the game, or was viewing the MEMORY MAP, or... WHO KNOWS. But... there is a COMPLETE RIFT 1-20 MAP... PIXEL PERFECT. I know this is a MAP generated from the GAME CODE itself because they even have a MAP with HULK LOCATIONS for RIFT 1... which is IMPOSSIBLE as you do not have any MAP MODULE on RIFT 1, making it IMPOSSIBLE through the GAMEPLAY itself to compile the MAP, you would HAVE to go digging around in the game itself, if you examined the memory map, or perhaps decompiled the C64 program, reading assembly language for a 6502 FAMILY PROCESSOR should be easy these days being that the 6502 is the MOST POPULAR 8-bit CPU, used in so many classic 8-bit devices like the C64, Atari 800xl and the NINTENDO. Granted they are not the EXACT 6502, sometimes being VARIANTS of it, but still, you get the point....
I wonder if there is a way somehow to EXTRACT the EXACT in game map. I was going to take it a step farther, making constant EMULATION SCREENSHOTS until I can compile the complete map, then just fill in the data for the camera room numbers, the guard route and that's it....

I played this years ago on Atari ST. Was wanting to see how the game would feel again after all these years and nice to see some videos about it, like this one. My memory is lost if I ever finished it, but I think I did. It was very exciting in any case and even though I guess it did not have a save system, I continued to play. Would be great to have a some kind of a remake, not sure though how it would go. Cheers...
