HOUSE UPDATE: WE ALMOST GOT FLOODED

- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- A crazy storm hit California last week and the house almost got flooded! Not exactly the kind of weather or situation we were expecting after living here for just a few months lol. Just some of the things you have to deal with when you buy an old home. We are glad that the house is safe and nothing got damaged. In other news we have some big things planned this year so I hope you are ready. Can't wait to share all of that with you soon :)

Any homeowner knows there is always something to take care of, usually unexpected. Your home is beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
Hi Arvin! I’m a civil engineer and you’re 100% correct in saying that this was an unforeseen event. Engineers and planners can only design for certain type of events, and there’s usually safety factors built in- this was an outlier occasion which obviously impacted so many people. Not sure who mentioned you should quit this home but they must be renters 😂 all homes have quirks and hurdles to overcome. I would do the improvements in your backyard, and look at flood maps in your area to better prepare and build redundancies. If you love your space, and it works for your family, stay ❤
Engineers also design according tot he environmental norms in an area. Flooding in LA isn't something that is easily predictable or thought of. That said, if people do live in an area prone to flooding you DO have to ensure that the water can run off and not get into the home. These days though, folks just gotta try and design for all weather phenom, whether natural or man-made. I've have heard in LA that you have really nice homes that do have poor drainage designs. So that has to be looked at when you are buying a house.
Good advice from a practical point of view. Thanks…
We are about to witness a lot of 'unique' weather events and record-breakers over the coming decades. It will happen again just like Long Beach and New Orleans will flood again within the next 1-2 decades.
As a general rule if your place has flooded twice in the last 20 years: MOVE.
IF YOU GET A REPLY SAYING TEXT ON TELEGRAM HELL NO THAT IS NOT THE RUclipsR IT IS A SCAMMER WILL SCAM YOU FOR YOUR INFORMATION AND TRICK YOU INTO PAYING MONEY FOR FAKE SHIPPING!!!!!!!!!! REAL WARNING ITS NOT THE RUclipsR
As soon as I heard about your yard flooding I thought - French drains. And you keep doing you and be happy. Selling a home you love because it almost flooded is just ridiculous (it didn’t even actually flood)- in MN we have basements because of tornados and many flood (particularly old ones). We fix them.
The messages I have received have been kind of nuts lol!!!
Totally fixable! Dont sell. Also sandbags. It was a very random event.
I don’t know what French drains are, but I immediately thought of digging a trench like or making an incline to drain downwards. Your house is beautiful and maybe you should hire a professional landscaper or engineer to avoid future flooding.
@@ArvinOlano I hope most have been helpful.
Totally thinking the same- French drains
You have a beautiful home! Nothing a landscaper can’t fix.
You bought a house and that is a good thing. There is always something with a house but the feeling of ownership can't be beat. You fix it up and move on to good times in your home. Y'ALL will be fine.
YES
What a relief that your home wasn't damaged from the rain! It's impossible to anticipate everything that could happen when dealing with new properties. Weird shit happens. In the late 70s, my parents bought a 3500 sq ft single story, 1950s slab ranch home on a few acres. Beautiful home, beautiful area. They remodeled, updated. Then we had a very snowy Michigan winter followed by a sudden spring warm up. The snow melted, the ground was still frozen, and the water ROLLED into the house! It was insane.
A good landscaper, a pump system, and a generator prevented any future biblical events. It's really amazing how a skilled landscaper can change the property structure and drainage issues.
Wow that is so unexpected!!! Yes we have had a few people come in to give us quotes, solutions, etc. Gotta fix it
That good ol Michigan weather!!
It’s hilarious - I looked at the iron gothic lamps and thought ‘Drew must love something like that’ and in the next second you mentioned Drew and his new home 😊
Same 😊
saaaame
We bought our dream home 7 months ago here in LA. The House was originally built in the 50’s and remodeled in 2021. This storm really did a number on our home too. We had water gushing into our bedroom window. It was scary and so stressful! We are still dealing it... We love our house and the dogs love their new home. It is what it is. We don’t regret anything. ❤
No one has a crystal ball when buying a home and property. Mother Nature is always in control, we just need to be prepared and be diligent with what we are Blessed with. Yes, you both made a wonderful decision buying this special home. I absolutely love it!
So glad you survived the storms. Watching the news about it was terrifying for so many people. No, you did not make a mistake buying that awesome home. It is perfect for you! All homes need some work, even new ones. Stay positive and ignore the naysayers!
we are staying positive
No. You bought an iconic piece of art history that is worth taking the time and going through a few trials then investing to correct any problems. I'm so jealous. I love your home. You are blessed!
Don’t regret it!!! You got to see early on a problem and you now know to look into it. We had a similar flooding at our home and I’m glad we caught it before it got worse!
No regrets
I’m glad you and Andrew are here in L. A. As a native Californian I’ve never seen it rain like it did with all the consecutive storms that went through California. That’s not the norm. Your home is lovely and so are YOU!
I bought a new-build home in SD around the same time y'all bought your LA house. AND I STILL FOUND ISSUES.
I think the problems with homes are unavoidable, no matter how old they are.
Your home is stunning - no regrets!
Hi Arvin. Long Beach local here. Our craftsman home is 100 years old. Renovation is common in So Cal. This year’s rain is a blessing and rare. Stay happy and so glad you settled in So. Cal.. welcome home!
These things happen that are unexpected. Weather cannot be controlled. Love your beautiful home!
Those office shelves are awesome. You get to display and enjoy so many of the items that make you happy.
When people say things like “it’s a lemon, get rid of it”. They don’t know anything about home ownership. Many times when you buy an old house, there will be problems. We bought an older house as well and unforeseen issues came up. You just fix it and move on. You don’t get rid of it. It will be ok and you’ll be relaxing in no time
It’s great to see you so happy and keeping things in perspective. Our homes have such a powerful influence on our hearts and souls. Looking forward to watching your journey!
It’s rare for California to get so much rain , houses always need repair, updates, enjoy that house , it’s beautiful
ANY home can have problems..water, pests etc. my friend has a home no where near any flood issues, but his NEW water heater malfunctioned and flooded his bedroom! NO ONE can guarantee unfortunate event ever on any home.
I built my home snd even tho it is on the side of a big hill, I had French drains all around the house. What an amazing thing! Zero issues with the big rains in CA…I worried about a tree falling in the extreme winds (no worries of it hitting my house..but could have damaged my car)..but it held fine. French drains are a blessing!!! Get if you can!❤️
Love your channel and your style.
Arvin. Hindsight is always 20/20! No one knows what the future holds. You and Andrew both have the house that you wanted and you have each other. Nothing is more important than that!❤
Glad y'all didn't get floored. I am from Florida, and still live here in Florida. We are used to rain and hurricanes. It is sprinkling here now. We really need the rain, badly.
With any home there is always something unexpectedly happening.
I love going to antique shops.
Thanks for the update and may you have a Blessed day.
Your house is perfection. All homes have their issues and natural disasters happen. I’m so glad you made through without flooding.

No mistake made on your house purchase. That can happen anywhere anytime. Stay positive. Fix what needs fixing. That’s it. Enjoy your beautiful home 🏡
I totally agree !
I adore you Arvin 💛, you'll work out all the bugs! You are going to be so happy 😊
Long term home owner here, first of all, you’re living in my dream home (thank you for sharing)❤❤❤. Second, honey any homeowner knows that you don’t own the house, it owns you😂. Never thought I’d have to deal with a raccoon making its way into my attic and dying up there😮. You should have been able to make it through a normal rainy season in SoCal with little to no problem even with a drainage issue, but honey, this was not a normal situation. I know, nobody asked😂. Please keep the fabulous coming.❤
Always love it when we see Andrew. Lots of BEAUTIFUL things. Sandbags for immediate relief. It can & WILL be corrected. Life can be quite an adventure. It's all good!
Glad to know you fared well through the rain storm.
I really enjoyed the 'authentic' snippet with you talking to us while having your morning coffee, hair not done and comfy clothes, you stilled stunning (of course) but it was good to see you looking more like me when I have my early morning coffee before putting myself together for the day ❤️
Key fortunate word is you ALMOST FLOODED. Andrew jumped in and did all the right things he could. Good job Andrew.

There’s a song that goes ‘it never rains in California...’ now that you have survived this unforeseen event you’ll be prepared for the next one - way in the future! Your home is gorgeous and you’ve already been through a lot on this journey with it. I look forward to seeing more of it.
Tony! Toni! Tone! - It Never Rains (In Southern California) ☔🌧
Your home is fabulous. Two resourceful guys like you and Andrew will prevail over the house/flood issue. Keep the faith.
Your Home is beautiful, the new adition pieces are wonderful and you guys made s great house purchase, all homes needs work at some point, even change color, we havent had this kind of heavy rains since 1993, it will all be ok, it takes time...for now keep.going, enjoy it cause is a wonderful place ❤️👌
The basement in the house I grew up in would always flood during days long rain storms. (I live in Oregon & this house was at the bottom of a pretty big hill). My mom hated it! We eventually got a sump pump that would take care of most of it, but we couldn’t carpet the basement, so my brother, sister & I got to paint the cement floors & we had so much fun! My mom was never a fan of the basement, but my siblings & I have wonderful memories of enjoying it :). Weather happens, you just need to do exactly what you are doing & prepare for it:).
Hi Arvin, I live in the northeast in Buffalo, NY. Listening to your woes about the storm and power outages, it made me want to share a game changer in my life. As you know, we get bad storms here, blizzards as you know, and after losing power so many times, I got a natural gas stand alone generator that runs the entire house and just starts up whenever the power goes off. When the power comes back on, it automatically shuts off. It has not only saved my basement from flooding, but things like heat and also air conditioning are never a problem. When the power is out for any length of time, or refrigerator and basement freezer never are at risk of spoiling. It is just a thought but maybe it would bring you peace of mind during future storms. As you know, the weather all over this country has become anything but normal!
You literally owe them nothing. I’m so happy for you.
Andrew is a Rockstar with his trench idea. So smart. French drains are definitely the way to go.

As a new homeowner myself, every home is unique not only in its features but its hidden secrets. I had a similar issue in my backyard, I installed a drain system I found at home depot and connected it to my drain while creating a small gradient away from my home. Fixed the issue. Things happen and what makes a home, home sometimes is how we aid it to perfection. Love your home and your backyard views!!
Thank you for sharing prices when you browse. I think it’s helpful for the viewer to become familiar with vintage pieces and their values. Especially hard to find pieces that won’t be in everyone’s home. They hold their value and make such a statement. You take the fear out of shopping for antiques. So appreciated!!!
Loved this. Really appreciated you getting down to earth about what's been going on in your home. We all sometimes have crazy omg moments with our homes, and I felt like I got a glimpse of the "off camera" real Arvin just being himself and open and maybe frustrated and vulnerable. Makes it so easy to connect with what you're saying. Well done.
Your home is beautiful, please don't listen to people. I had problems with my home due to the rain, a lot of people did. I live in northern California, and that rain we experienced was absolutely crazy
You did not make a mistake. Mother Nature is unpredictable. You have a gorgeous home. Don’t look back always look forward. Life I’d full of ups and downs, just keep in mind that your home will always have issues and decorating sometimes should take a back seat to your home’s needs. You will continue to be happy with your new home. Love is what counts.
This house is far from a lemon. It needs a little work like every home out there. It’s so stunning and your on the right path I’m glad you home didn’t flood and you can fix the issue now that you know of it and how you need it 🥰 much love
Hi Arvin...we all have had issues with our homes, new or old there's always something. What's been happening it's called nature and we cannot fight it, we prepare . Just be aware of flaws, fix it and enjoy your beautiful home and your family. I live in an area ( carribbean) where EVERY year we have to be prepared and be aware of
hurricanes and because of that I'm not leaving my home. We have been badly hit and struggled but have overcome the situation. SO ENJOY YOUR NEW BEAUTIFUL HOME!!!😉
That's a good start. You need french drains to divert the water away from the home. Dig a trench, put in tubes, fill back in. EASY button 🔘. ok at 15:10 you figured it out. It's actually common way to protect the home. We use it a lot I'm Midwest because when snow melts and spring is here the ground gets soaked. Rule of thumb is you always want a downgrade of yard around your home.
"Obviously shelves are not styled right now. Real life lol" They look incredible!
The house is perfect for you guys, you just need to get the drainage issue fixed and you'll be fine. Enjoy your beautiful home and your lovely lives.
I love your home. I love your style. I love it when you take us antiquing!
I feel for you. As a home buying veteran over 50 years, I still vividly remember surprises and get clammy hands. Like after closing on first home, having seller ask my wasbund how was he with a hammer…because we needed a new roof! And then the basement flooded because the floor drain was covered with plaster and carpet and the sump pump failed! Like having a squirrel join us in house #2 during a blizzard! Like having leaks hidden by seller of house #3. By house #4, I had learned to roll with the flow, make repairs and move on (including a new husband). I empathize with your distress. But you know what? You’ll take some deep breaths, make repairs and adjustments, and go on loving your home. It will be great!! Best wishes!
Oh Arvin! My heart is with you both! I’m in the SF Bay Area and these storms and flooding were insane and unprecedented. We were all white knuckling through it and I hope it brings beautiful things in the spring. I love it when you take up shopping, and thank you for all you do!

The joys of home ownership! The drainage thing is an easy fix. Until that drainfield is done just have some sandbags handy as you can always put those around doorways, etc. Anywhere water has a point of entry... Some silicone caulk is easy to put around low lying windows to help prevent water seepage into a window and getting into the framing/walls/floor. That will help prevent damage and possible rot or development of mold. Don't worry... You have a beautiful home and just enjoy it! I love the antique shopping and I say yes go back and get that vase! It's lovely! Every climate has its suprise moments... You just have to roll with it. 😊
Keep your home; that drainage issue can be fixed!!! Trust me and my 1958 Ranch!!! 🥰
Wipe your tears, like rain. You're so happy, love your eclectic vids & eye for design. Fix & stay, lucky it stayed outside.
Arvin, your home is beautiful but unforeseen events can happen! No matter where u live "house issues" come up! My house is approx. 60 years old and I had a sewer pipe break which was the worst thing that ever happened, I lost weight in one week from stress! You and Andrew will tackle anything that comes your way and come out on top! ❤
Yes Arvin so many ppl in California are now having to prepare for future! No one was prepared for this🤦🏽♀️ And we’re in the Bay Area! Love you, love your home and I’m excited for all your changes!🥰
I feel your pain, flooding is awful. We had our old house flooded so many times, worse case being hurricane Sandy that brought eight feet of water into the house. We fixed things and kept living there, loving it. I wish you best of luck in your beautiful home! I’m sure you know what you are doing, so keep going and doing you! Hugs 🤗
Minor flooding is no reason to get rid of a house. The house looks amazing

Beautiful Home. These things happen. I remember walking up to my house in Miami Springs after raining all day with water up to my knees,
Your husband was smart to dig the ditch to drain the water away!🙌🏼 It's great to have neighbors to borrow the shovel from🖤

I adore the wibe of your home, the lighting, wood and greenery all around and the view from the yard is also great. It's a place worth investing your effort and money in for sure.
People saying you made a mistake are most likely not home owners themselves. When you own a home, there is always something to be fixed. You can’t possibly prepare for every natural disaster. I own an apartment and there still is always something to be fixed. You keep enjoying your beautiful home!
I would ignore any comments about moving. It’s unforeseen weather we are having across the globe. The one thing I would recommend is getting a generator for the future if the power goes out and especially if it’s for a long period of time. There is only so much as a homeowner you can do. Keep doing your thing and I love your videos. ❤😊
That lamp is marvelous! Love it
The best ‘drainage thing’ is the slope of the hill below you when you sit on the top of the hill.
No mistake. ..nature happens...that View is worth it all🥰
Don’t get discouraged. We just built a new home and one year in and we have had to deal with a lot. It even happens in the new built. But I love my house and I wouldn’t trade it for another one. It’ll be the same thing if we move. Being a homeowner is not easy but totally worth it!!
It's a beautiful home!! We never know what life will bring us & when. After 6 yrs in my home, last yr my area had downpours & flooded by entire backyard (lost approx $5,000 worth of sod). Had a french drain put in & no more flooding even after a recent tornado, hail & downpours. Best decision I made & worth every penny. Just keep on being you..smile & ignore the negativity. 🙂
I'm so glad the rain in California is over. I know it had to be terrible. Poor Andrew out there shoveling. Bless his heart. We live south east GA. Hurricanes are a problem for us.I can relate. Stay well.
Hey don't worry!!! You have a lovely home!!!! Any house would represent additional work and the storm was a rare event... they say that in the sin is the penitence so if you love ❤️ your house it will requiere work so stay calm
Hello, Arvin! Thank you for posting and hope all is well. Remember one thing....most homes have issues you don't know about when you purchase (speaking as a realtor for 20 years). When you love your home, you deal with whatever is thrown at you. Doesn't mean you made a mistake! Be well. Best, Angela

Hey Arvin, people can be negative but you staying positive is great! The thing is, a house never runs smoothly, like life, there's gonna be bumps along the road. Nothing worth having is easy. I love your home, it's so you and Andrew. That's all that matter's💙🙏
Sorry to hear about the flooding! Get yourself a generator for the net time, hopefully there want be a next time but we never know these days!!
Glad you ultimately came out ok after this storm! Love the antique store you visited (recognized that dealer with the pink notes, he is great to work with...) As for the backyard flooding, we also experienced water coming up on our patio, as the drains couldn't handle the amount of water..too much all at one. My husband purchased this long expandable hose, that is essentially like a sponge. It works like sandbags, and I must say, it saved the water from coming up to our foundation. I highly recommend it as a back-up to pumping. Have a great weekend, we finally have some sun here in LA!

More wild weather events will come, be prepared. Keep the ditch but fill it with landscape stones, it’ll look beautiful. Also keep large buckets in the garage so worst case you’ll be able to scoop and pour the water elsewhere

Hi Arvin! Where do I start…….ok, nobody asked but, I love your home! You are so right and I so agree with you about facing issues with a mid century home. Your passion for this move and your new home is so obvious to me. I am so happy for you and Andrew! I love your home and when you love something you just deal with whatever you need to. I can’t believe that people were making those mean comments. Arvin!! The view from your backyard is absolutely fabulous!!! How great to wake up to that every day. You’re so lucky! Lastly, I really love the shelves in your office, they’re just terrific and you’ve done a great job staging them. I’m excited and ready to be flipped about your upcoming project! All My Best, Trisha
All good, it's all part of being a homeowner. People making those unfounded negative comments are probably not homeowners. Love your interior design style, your stunning MCM home and your channel!!

Why would people ask that question? You cannot control the weather. You did whatever you could, and you did the right thing. I’m glad you addressed it. People need to get a grip. Geez!
You would not believe some of the things people have said LOL like whattt
adorable dog ....but yeah a lot of the time as a home owner you do invest in not so fun projects and improvements but in the long run those things really do improve living in the house 🥰 new construction can have issues too - our house is 76 years old...love your shelving
Our house was the same way! We did get a basement flooded during our first huge rainstorm. My husband works in construction and knew we needed a berm up on the hill. All of our neighbors had one, but we didn't so we got hit with runoff. Keep the house it just needs landscaping done.
You look super cute in the clip about the flooding. The hair, the glasses, the sweater. 🔥
You and Andrew are the sweetest together!! 🥺🥰
It doesn't matter how old one's home is, we can't speculate what Mother's Nature is going to do from hour/ day....l live were tornadoes and high winds, and ice storms happen, all regions in the United States has its issues... Thanks for sharing your new home and Happy New Year...
The weather has gotten so extreme lately, it's concerning. I owned a newly built home in Florida that did NOT require flood insurance. Unfortunately, during the last hurricane ( that hit on the OPPOSITE side of the state) brought on sooo much rain, the house flooded. Concentrate on what you guys need to do to protect your home. I'm so glad you DIDN'T flood. ❤
Every home will have some challenges, your home is gorgeous beautiful.......😍😍😍😍
Water can be so scary when its entering your home. Ten years ago Milwaukee had what they called a 500 year rain storm, when I got home I had 4 feet of water in my basement, had to replace furnace, washer, water heater. And I never had this, your house is beautiful and sometimes these things help us find what we need to adjust. Good luck.
Be grateful you now know what the property needs and nothing really bad happened in that process.
And it never rains in LA 😊
The office looks amazing! I love the settee in there….the one Andrew says is “his.” 😍
Your home is to die for. Things happen at every home. Older homes especially. Of course you made a good decision!
You did not make a mistake at all, things happen, nature happens unexpectedly that’s the way life is sometimes, you just learn to roll with it and it will make you stronger so Arvin good job on getting through it. Your home is beautiful!

Love the lamp!! Absolutely gorgeous!! Also definitely go back for the pre-Colombian vase. It is soooooo good! The dining room tree is perfection along with the Mexican round pot with the tree in the office. What is the name of that tree? It is so amazing how they fit it in the round pot.
Last thing...the rain! I am in LA as well and I think the whole city of LA was overwhelmed during the storms. We called Shellback Plumbing to snake the drain to make sure that water was flowing to the street and also had a landscape contractor add more drains and pipes to our side yard. They connected the pipes to the rain gutters so that the water directly flowed to the street. It so important to get the water away from the house so it doesn't ruin the foundation because that is even a more expensive problem! Do you have rain gutters yet? So many houses in LA do not have them and it is always an after thought.
Anywho best of luck with everything and can't wait to see all your renovation videos in the coming year ahead!
We bought our first house just 2 years ago, and nary a month goes by without me thinking I made a mistake and that we’re in way over our heads! That nightmare weather was not a normal event, just keep moving forward, Arvin! That’s all we can do!😘
Love the shelves in the office!
Your lawn/grass is higher then your cement patio - all you need to do is dig the grass up take some soil out to lower your lawn level and slope it away from home towards the back of home. I live in Queensland Australia where we have cyclones floods on a regular year in our wet season. This always works. You can do French drains as well.

We have been in our home for almost 20 years and it’s always something. 3 months after we moved in the previous home owners sum pump failed. We had to correct it and put in a system with a battery back up if we lost power. So glad we did because no matter where you live Mother Nature can throw you a curve ball. This does not mean people buy a lemon so to speak homes need constant maintenance and up keep. I know many people that have bought new construction and that isn’t always the best as well. Older homes have character, history and I feel better made. The only thing that matters in the end is if you love your home and love where your living everything else is just background noise! So congrats enjoy!!
