  • Bangkok is a safe city compared to most large cities around the world, crimes against tourist exist but are preventable with a few precautions and common sense. I walk around Nana's nightlife on a Saturday night and look at what risks you face and chat with those who can offer sound advice including the great Bill from ‪@UTCM‬ channel. I also took a trip around Din Daeng flats, an area that was supposedly a ghetto according to netziens. What find was definitely different!

Bangkok police have cracked down on riding motorbikes on sidewalks, and even have a snitch program where you can get 1,000 Baht for reporting sidewalk scofflaws. It hasn't stopped it completely, but is definitely much less than before.

My first trip to Bangkok was in 1997, we stayed at Wendy House on Soi Kasem San and wandered about Bangkok for 4 days and nights before heading further afield. Having never been to Thailand I was struck by the kindness and helpfulness we felt wherever we went, often being the only Farang's to be seen in many places. All of your advice is what we heeded back then and I have made 3 more trips there and following said advice have never felt in danger or taken advantage of. As any pilot will tell you, if you don't have situational awareness you will find yourself in trouble. That applies to life in general or traveling out of your own comfort zone. Stay polite, don't make the local folks lose face and use your head if you are heading out for a night carousing and you will be just fine. I've never felt threatened anywhere in Thailand or SE Asia in general by following those rules. Great subject and hopefully people will pay attention to your advice, Thanks Pat!

I lived in Soi 6 a few years until year 2000. Never had any problems. Then I moved across the road for the last 20+ years, still never a problem. Obviously I avoid those hugging "ladies" and I don't try to argue with drunk or aggressive guys. Never any problem with any bouncer or tuk-tuk or taxi drivers. If they want to overcharge just ignore them. As you and others mentioned in your video some guys just drink too much and think let's party and what can go possibly wrong. They find out what can go wrong - mostly losing money and valuables. Some guys learn from that experience. Other need some more time...

Was travelling with a couple of golf buddies on our first trip to BKK when approached by a Tuk Tuk driver in Silom to see a "famous" Ping Pong show. Being complete newbies, we thought WTF and jumped in. First he took us on a high speed tour of the city. I remember going past the Grand Palace until 20mins later we arrived at a very seedy industrial complex. We realised we may have made a big mistake so we prepared ourselves for whatever was coming. We were shown in a door for 500B each where there was a dimmly lit stage surrounded by seating. All the operations "staff" looked like hardcore mafia types. No welcome smiling faces in this place. The show began and all I can say is we will never be able to unsee what we saw without going into details but it certainly wasn't the glamorous models featured on the Tuk Tuk drivers laminated brochure. At least we weren't beaten, robbed and left floating in a canal somewhere.

About 7 years ago a taxi driver offered to take me to a place with "sexy girls". We ended up in this poor looking bar located right down the Makkasan end of Sukhumvit Soi 3, laneway heading west right at the bend. It was between Nikhom Makkasan Rd and the Saen Saep canal. The taxi driver was friendly enough and told me to have a look and he would wait if I did not like it. I went inside and there was a lineup of 5-6 older, not that attractive women, all looking rather bored. I had a beer for about 100 baht and then told the taxi driver I was not interested so we left and he took me home. No hassles. No rip-off. I actually felt a bit sorry for the women there because the place was so out of the way I doubt there would have been much business, other than taxi drivers or tuk-tuk drivers. The taxi driver himself was quite friendly and seemed to think he was doing me a favour by finding a girl for me at 4am. It was an interesting experience and I did not feel threatened at all.

One of the fun places on Soi 3/1 are the Middle Eastern nightclubs. The normally operate after midnight, and they go on till dawn. In old days before Thaksin, you could be there till 9 am! There foreign dancers in there, from Syria, Tunisia, etc. The music is very loud, it's like being in the Middle East. Quite an interesting experience in there. And you should see the way they tip the dancers. Really crazy!

It is probably much safer in Bangkok compared to my small town here in Sweden, Gothenburg. Here the risk of being robbed is high, especially if you are out in the middle of the night, in the central area . A large migration from Arab and African, Afghanistan countrys is the cause of the dramatically increasing violence here.

My wife and I visited Bangkok several times before covid and always found it safe. Usually stayed AirBnb off Sukhumvit Road from Asoke to Onnut. In fact the last time we stayed was out further than Onnut. We were in our 60s and walked for miles, day and night, without problem. And travelled on the Klong boats several times. We always took care of the bags we were carrying as bag snatching from a scooter was something to be wary of. Did notice we were being followed one evening. We were walking from Chinatown to the Thip Samai restaurant and it was getting dark. We got to a bus stop where there were plenty of people so we just stopped, turned, and stared at the young guy. He realised he'd been rumbled, ran across the road and disappeared up a side street. We never felt threatened, he was just an opportunist maybe hoping to snatch something. Also got conned a couple of times by tuktuk drivers so I avoid them like the plague. Those are the only problems we encountered. Safe city, if you are sensible. As are all the cities we've visited in Asia. China is the safest of the lot.

I only experienced being robbed once some years ago in Khon Kaen. My wife and I were walking back to our hotel after dinner. 2 young guys came silently behind us coasting on a scooter with the engine off. They stole my wifes hand bag from her hand . She didnt have the strap over her shoulder. We reported it to the hotel security as it happened on their land. Totally not interested at all. We then wasted 2 hours at the nearby police station reporting it . They were equally not interested. Should have known. My wife only had a cheap holiday phone and a thousand baht in there so no big deal. The next day we decided to call the phone and see what would happen . A young thai guy actuall answered it and wanted us to meet him with a couple of thousand baht to get phone and bag back. Of course we didnt we wrote it off as a bad experience. Despite it not being a violent situation it was very unsettling. I never wear any jewelry or watch when out and my back pockets are empty Money in the front of my pants only with an additional 2000 baht well hidden under my clothes just in case.

I feel Bangkok is relatively safe, greatest danger being the traffic. I've only recently returned to the city, but in the past there were many scam artists ripping people off, don't know how true that is today. I spent about six months in Phuket [Patong], and while there the only thing I worried about were the very drunk and aggressive foreigners I sometimes came across. Some of those guys were just looking for trouble.
I've also spent a fair bit of time in Hong Kong, and in my opinion that city is much safer than Bangkok in most respects.
I do have a Phuket crime story from 2005 to share. I was in my hotel room one night and was in the shower getting ready to go out. I forgot to lock my door and as I exited the shower a strange girl was walking out of my room. I threw on some shorts, ran downstairs and saw her on the back of a motorbike driving away. Went back to the room to see my [very cheap] mobile was gone. Could have been worse as I had a laptop in there as well. I later discovered that local gangs were pulling these robberies all over the place. Always keep your room locked and store your valuables in the room safe . . . .
