I have 2 deer that I have raised since their mother was killed by a car. I have seen them through accidents of their own and through illnesses over 6 years. I don't treat them like pets, never touch them. (One of them touches me from time to time but I don't touch back. The female lost her fawn at birth this year and spent 3 weeks sleeping next to the house. She wanted to be near me for some reason. Over the years the only thing that has deviated regarding their behavior is that they don't migrate out to the main highway where 90 percent of the accident fatalities occur. I think trying to domesticate them is wrong, but putting out feed for them can be of a benefit depending on the circumstance. The average life expectancy for the local deer is 3 years. Starvation and car accidents account for most premature deaths.

You haven't spent much time around wild deer have you. They have a habit of scrounging food from wherever they can. If there is something sweet in the garbage can they will knock it over to get to it. They have very unique personalities with likes and dislikes not shared by all. I spend on average 300 dollars a month on deer feed, dried corn,, apples, vitamins medical supplies and yes, treats. Don't make big bold statements about what people feed the deer. They eat what they like and unlike most people we spend time getting to know them as individuals.
