Maze meal in feeder wagon is what you need for to get a final flesh cover. Its cheapish here in ireland at moment too. Id bet its even cheaper in England. Its the best form of energy. Any of the top beef finisher nuts you buy. Maze will be the main ingredient straight maze meal is what you need

I am constantly amazed at the breadth of knowledge required to run a farm. I went a little pale when you mentioned what your power bill was in a month. Thank you so much for putting out these videos. I wish they were required watching in our school system. I think that people are becoming more disconnected from how food is produced. All the best from Canada

Enjoyed the video. Alot of good points. At times having a lot of stock seams the best thing, but as you said more work more pressure on everything and everyone as you just become a dad and weather has been horrible ease the load for all the family return some cash flow back in the pot . 😊 .

We finish 450 cattle every year with Dairy quality silage and a mixture of oats and barley and sometimes if wheat is the same price as barley we add some near the end to firm the carcass. It’s not fast to fatten but is good value.
Always thought your dad was proud of you, now we have the evidence. Like how you, your dad and the rest of the team you have work things out together.
And those calves, well spoilt.👍

Looks really good, I suppose with the different things that are happening it won't be long before milking becomes fully automated. I know there are some farms that have robot milkers, would be interesting to see something on that if you can find one to film. 👍
Great video, reminded me of the silage wheel pusher I made in 1984 out of scrap rsj old lorry back duel wheel for height and hooked onto our Matbro pin and cone face plate and won the Cornwall YFC item out of scrap competition 1984....
Still here today (on the scrap pile)

Hi Tom, good video, a decent maize crop will yield the same tons of dry matter/ha as 3 or 4 cuts of grass silage. So can you use maize as part of reseed rotation to improve so poorer grass lays?
Or scale back the beef enterprise to just what’s your shop requires and scale back work load and use the grass area the beef would graze to grow maize for the dairy cows.
Sometimes less is more.

Good to hear of your new addition. Baby Harvey and our grandson Henry ( born mid Sept.) will be growing up with only an ocean between them. Best wishes to all and Merry Christmas when it comes. Feeding corn to your beef will change the fat to a yellow tinge. If they're used to the barley-fed white fat that might be a concern.
When we changed over to a heat recovery system in our dairy we were surprised by the temperature of the water coming out as well. 20 years since we milked our own cows and the day-to-day struggles haven't changed much. Still a rewarding life and a great place to watch children grow up!
here in the states we mostly use j bunks for beef cows and floor feed for dairy never thought of having to push up feed for our beef cows on our farm since we use bunks but that thing looks awesome
Hello Tom. I am houding maïs for my beef stock. Blonde d,aquitaine.
They grow very good on maïs.
10KG PER cow a day with 20 kg silage and 1kg pellets.

From Kerry in ireland lots off men using sugar beet to finish cattle for the factory they swear by it currently costing between 60 and 80 euros a ton and the Keenan diet feeders are great for chopping it up

I'm wondering if you have looked into wind power.
Not the windmills but rather, horizontal wind turbines.
They are mounted on the ridges of the large sheds and are much more discrete than the traditional windmills.

We fed homegrown Oats and Barley (rolled in a mill) very cheaply and successfully to all the stock. (Calves, cows, young stock and fattening Beasts, and In lamb Ewes).
Do it and save yourself a fortune.
Do you plan to rear all your calves in future? Do you have enough housing and grass to do that?

You could save the small milk tank as a water tank, if you ever want to add water to your ration you have the tank ready!
The pusher thing - drill a small hole and put a bolt in the hole just tight enough to bite on the fork/tine your using and you should get forward and rear travel Tom …
People think milking cows is a 7 days a week job, when in reality,
it's a 14 days a week job.
At college a few years ago, the beef unit was fed fodder beat, your ground may be too wet though.
I bet their glad to have you back but you must learn now to get a balance as Jo and that new son of yours will need your time too.
The farm is improving all the time and gettjng more and more efficient and you seem to have really good happy staff which is very important it's like one big family not just the actual family which is nice
Great that the guys over the road will push silage up for you daily that's another job delegated and will improve the beef side of things, will be interesting to see what the maize silage and barley does
And that's really impressive butterfat and protein figures that's the beauty of mixing your breeds in your herd and a lot of farmers seem to be going away from holsteins and back to the old dairy breeds which is nice to see

Hi Tom, I would definitely think of extended your cow house into the planned viewing area(calf area) once you get your new calf house finished. A cheap way of expanding herd size. Most milking herd sizes are 200+. My uncle used to talk about 1 million litres to pay the labour and another million litres for your income. You are adding extra value by bottling your milk which he did not do.
