      Potatoes are the fruit of the soil, you can bake them fry them, mash them, roast them, boil them and on and on! You can even ferment them, and get Vodka. Kidding aside, It's a high energy food source. Some boiled potatoes, with cabbage some spam and a bottle of vodka, kept a field army going till victory!

    This is a perfect example of how science works, Kelvin made an estimate on the data that he had. Later scientists found more information that proved the original estimates wrong so they changed based on new information. I love stuff like this that shows the self correcting nature of science, why can't my religious friends see how great this is!?

    • @RoM1il
      @RoM1il 10 лет назад +18

      The thing is, Lord Kelvin died believing he was right about dating the Earth as 20ma years old, back then 20 million years was a leap from 10,000 years which was popular belief. It was moving in the right direction but no way near the actual age of 4.55 billion. It took observations by Geologists, famously, James Hutton to begin to answer the question of the true age of the Earth. Although Hutton died without anyone believing him.

    • @craigt4956

      we don't know the age of the earth scientifically because it was born from the electromagnetic pinch effect. which is matter concentration or extreme compression of matter. The earth formed in one of the stellar birkeland currents coming from the sun. Excluding religious beliefs, the earth could be anywhere from 6000 years old to 80 billion years old. We just can't know. All we have is written history to tell us it's at LEAST 6000 years old. I'm certain there are a few planets out there that are just 1000 years old.

    • @bananaman7458
      @bananaman7458 8 лет назад +16

      +Chandler Greskamp So you ignore the radio metric dating of rock which show that the earth is at least a billion of years old? How about other geological phenomena which can only occur over hundreds of millions of years?

    • @crazylegs1324
      @crazylegs1324 8 лет назад +13

      Bananaman I'm not ignoring it. But at the same time I don't accept it as a reliable way of dating the earth or individual rocks. Can you show me where radiometric dating has actually dated something if previously known age? Every time it happens it's way off. So I pump the brakes every time I here "radio metric dating tells us the age of this rock" or whatever. I am a supporter of the EU (Electric Universe) Theory. This means that I actually scrutinize every "fact" that is put in front of me to see if it has its foundation in truth.

    Question: If heat takes such a long time to get from the core to the "surface" (or in this example to the mineshaft), then how OLD is the heat one feels down inside a mine? is it heat left over from the creation of the planet or is it recently generated heat like the heat generated by friction of the mantle?
    Is the core/mantle constantly CREATING heat or fueling the heat in some way therefore keeping the earth warm or is it ALL heat from the time when earth was a blob of molten goo??

      +Pankaj Singh You're right. She mentioned radioactive decay, but that is not whe only reason. Here it is: The solar system started out as a (relatively cool) giant gas cloud. Over time gravity compressed this cloud into the Sun and planets. When things compress, they heat. That's it, really. A giant cloud of, say, 100K, may become, say, 1000K when compressed into a planet.

    so. basically the core generates heat onto the planet's surface and few out onto space and causes it to the nearest location get hot, like 1539 faranheit or something in the core, since it gets the most heat since it's the nearest. the rocky surface inside gets more heat due to this.

    @MinuteEarth I think You've made an error in describing how radioactive heat drives internal temperature. Heat released from radioactive decay of K is one of the biggest contributors to internal temperature rise. That element naturally partitions into continental crust at a much higher rate than other elements because it's less dense and dissolves into melt quicker than other similar elements. K exists ubiquitously throughout continental crust and as a result its radioactive decay causes internal temperatures to go up. Because rock is an excellent insulator that heat gets trapped. Also, conductive heat from the inner core is arguably the smallest driver of plate tectonics and doesn't work like a conveyor belt. Bad analogy. But nice try.

    • @thewackenpilgrim
      @thewackenpilgrim 6 лет назад

      I think you have a point about the radioactivity in the crust and the crust beeing an insulator - i think i learned that sometime in my undergrad geology study but for some reason it is usually left out in these explainations. The reason you are giving is however not quite correct. Its not only radioactive isotopes of K but also Th and U that are concentrated in the earths crust due to fractional crystallization - however this has nothing to do with density (it makes no sence to talk about density when talking about ions anyways, and you wont find K in the metallic state in the crust its extremely reactive) but with compatibility which depends on the valence and the ionic radius of a certain element - K, Th, and U are incompatible i.e. they go in to the melt
