so glad you found my Jacob. We are so lucky to be living on the planet with him. Please go down the JC rabbit hole since you were so rightly moved by this overwhelming video. He has a zillion Grammys and is up for album of the year this year. Start with his Moon River, then just go through his 6 incredible albums. Audience choir is what he calls what you just saw, and is a big part of what he is famous for. His Grammy nom record this year is built around the sound of him manipulating the audience choir. There are hundreds and hundreds of bootlegs on youtube with him doing this all over the world. You deserve his music in your life.
Fun fact, the audience had no idea Jacob was going to be there. This was a Laufey concert and she brought Jacob in as a surprise. Also, the man at the end is Ben Folds who is currently the Artistic Adviser for the NSO.
If you watch a lot of Collier, you can see him conducting throughout a song. Obvious when he works the audience. Subtile when he leads the other musicians. Since a great deal of his performances are improvised using jazz techniques, this is how he holds things together. His mother is a conductor, and they both have a very unique way of bringing out the best in a performer-a musician or an audience member. I really liked your "magic" thoughts.
Wow, that's really cool. I thought Jacob was only able to pull off the audience choir because a lot of his fans are musicians. A lot of musicians love Dodie too of course, but I think she probably has a much larger portion of non-musicians in her audience.
this was my first time listening to this song as well as yours but this was amazing more people need to stumble across this and i hope it makes their day a bit brighter like it did mine great vid
So enjoyed you reaction. I like when you review Jacob's work. He also wrote the orchestration for this piece. If you look for interviews with Jacob Collier, in one of those he explains "the risk" of trying the "audience choir" - needless to say it worked. I think a big part of it is his energy on the stage - he is magnetic, and his joy is infectious. Just do a search of "Jacob and audience choir" - you will find many examples, anywhere from a a handful of people to over 30,000 (at Glastonbury- which is also on RUclips). He instructs whole steps with a firm move up or down, half steps (chromatic) with a bend of his wrist, and changing the vowel sound he points to his mouth to give instruction. Difficult to explain - but always beautiful to watch - and remember, these are not choirs, but rather, just the attending audience. He has a created a whole new world of music - and is not only making the world just a little bit better, but is also reconnecting it one audience at a time. Thank you for sharing - and .... keep going!!!
I agree 😊 he seems to have music flowing through his fingers when he directs the audience. And I think everyone feels it. Quite magical to say the least ✨️ 😌 thanks for watching
Been a part of an audience choir before with him. The idea is that everyone's voice averages out and people hear where the pitch needs to go to "feel right" (stable frequency), it turns out you get pretty solid chords if you have enough voices being guided by a single mind lol.
100% for all you said about Jacob. If you want to dive deeper into what dodie does (bzw she's also in the "little blue mahogany" video), the version of her and pomplamoose of her song "monster" is exceptionally cool and well produced. Definitely worth checking out.
"What is this sorcery?" - It is Jacob Collier sorcery. The late legendary music producer Quincy Jones, who's career spanned over seven decades, has said of Jacob simply, "I have never in my life seen a talent like this." If you are interested in learning more about him, check out a documentary on him that aired on the BBC a few years ago: ruclips.net/video/ERvd5QjupSU/видео.htmlsi=M10mx5U0_7qynkhP It does a great job introducing Jacob and his incredible talents and his career so far. Have fun!
Thanks for this… as you say, Jacob is magical. Check out his vid of ‘Little Blue’ on Mahogany Sessions for more sorcery, on an intimate scale. Also any of his early works like ‘Moon River’ “The Flintstones” or “All Night Long,” you will be gobsmacked! And, for one of the best collaborations of the century, “Jacob Collier and AURORA - A Rock Somewhere (GreenPeace)” - Miraculous !
I would also add In the Real Early Morning at the BBC Proms on RUclips , and best of all, the choral masterpiece World O World, whose recording session was recently posted on RUclips, as well. Three Christmas Songs, which was just posted, is no slouch either. Bring tissues.
Directing the audience as a choir is something that Jacob does at all of his concerts. Here is one example, a video from his own RUclips channel: ruclips.net/video/3KsF309XpJo/видео.htmlsi=oNv7y-SEuulXTG-q It really is incredible and, no matter how many times I've seen him do it, I still think it must be some kind of magic!
14:12 Bonjour Tiara.
So...I just had a random thought...This must have been a new and unique experience for the members of the symphony! I assume they typically rehearse in an empty auditorium, so of course there would be no way to rehearse the audience choir portion of the performance. What a neat way to turn the whole experience on its head - with the symphony musicians in a sense becoming the audience!
Jacob also did the arrangement and orchestration for that particular tune - that on top of getting the audience to pitches needed to accompany his own singing. JC has an almost otherworldly understanding of people's emotional connection to vibration in general, and especially to our connection with musical vibration. The rabbit hole is DEEP for JC's stuff, but it's definitely worth the plunge.
You 'got it'. Jacob Collier creates a communal, transcendent, experience beyond music. Please consider reacting to: _Jacob Collier - The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)_ ① This fits the season very well; composed by Robert Wells and Mel Tormé, and made famous by Nat King Cole. It is only him performing, no audience choir. _Jacob Collier - Somebody To Love (Live in Lisbon)_ ② Collier learned a new song for each city on his 2022 World Tour (over 60 cities). This is one of my favourites. AFAIK, Only Lisbon heard this, and participated, on that World Tour tour. A lovely, unique gift. Merry Christmas, and Happy, Peaceful New Year. 🎅🎉 ☮ ① ruclips.net/video/o9CusMKhoqk/видео.html ② ruclips.net/video/cCl7_tXs80Y/видео.html
Imagine seeing a couple of videos online and going to see him in concert at the Kennedy Center for the first time and being in the middle of that not knowing that he does these audience choirs. That's what happened to me 2 days after this video was filmed when it was just him, his band and the NSO. I was stunned. Had no idea it was even possible. Also there that night were the Aeolians who premiered his choral work "World O World" which you'll definitely want to check out - a real professional choir in classical mode. I can imagine that being in the middle of one of his audience choirs is a euphoric, almost religious experience. If you weren't a huge fan of his before that, I'm sure you would be afterwards.
@@TheBigburcie Yes, it was but the entire concert was mesmerizing including the premiere of World O World, playing Bach, All Night Long, DJesse and pretty much everything. The variety of it all also had impact.

It's amazing watching you get lost in this. I've loved Dodie for years and her voice goes so well with an orchestra like this
He is a musical genius, pure and simple.

Have to imagine the typical Jacob Collier fan probably has some musical experience in their background if not professionals themselves.
