Lyrics:
Ivory Madonna, dying in the dust
Waiting for the manna coming from the west
Barren is her bosom, empty as her eyes
Death a certain harvest scattered from the skies
Skin and bones is creeping, doesn't know he's dead
Ancient eyes are peeping, from his infant head
Politicians argue sharpening their knives
Drawing up their bargains, trading baby lives
[Chorus]
Ivory Madonna, dying in the dust
Waiting for the manna coming from the west
Hear the bells are ringing, Christmas on it's way
Hear the angels singing, what is that they say?
Eat and drink rejoicing, joy is hear to stay
Jesus son of Mary is born again today
[Chorus]
Ivory Madonna, dying in the dust
Waiting for the manna coming from the west
Ivory Madonna, dying in the dust
Waiting for the manna coming from the west

I was 17 when this come out I’m now 61. If u don’t like it you need a Covid test as you’ve no TASTE ! Classic song
It's a beautiful haunting song, my favourite UB40 track
😂😂😂 That's one quality comment!! Love it!! And been listening to these since before I can remember ❤
55 here. This was mind blowing growing up…..and now……
Absolutely. Fab song, fab music and the lyrics are still as relevant today as they were when it was first released! And as Kate said, so haunting, added to I think by the gravity of the lyrics!
First album I ever bought back in 1980, and bought with my dole money from signing on with my UB40
Rip Brian. This song is as great as it is thanks to his playing.
For me, this is the best song UB40 did. Original. Great saxophone; great lyrics and brilliant reggae!
L' album "sign off" est fabuleux.
La scène reggae anglaise de cette période était hyper riche (steel pulse, aswad, culture, gladiators...).
multiculti nonsense🤨
Cela me rappel Mes potes de l'armée ce morceau me rappel nos sauts en parachute dans le vide les belles années 80 une époque révolue a jamais.
Totally agree with you :D

This is a time machine for me. Takes me back to walking around Moseley and Kings Heath in the summer of 1980 and it seemed to be coming from every window, great times at the Fighting Cocks, lying in the parks hammered on woodpecker, cycling everywhere, and always sunny, and the girls, the girls....
Sounds amazing
Ultimate description, respect
I like your style man ! 👌
Woodpecker... yes... nostalgia hurts
Cool memory❤
i love this song since my early teen....i'm 48 now......greetings from Malaysia.
I'm 46. There's still good music going around.
You might have to change the channel on your radio... you grumpy old man.

اغاني الزمن الجميل لا يتكرر خصوصا مجموعة الرائعة UB40
The hardship we went through in the 80/90s in the UK lead to some proper music 💯 UK Regae and garage, acid and rave. Best times of my life. Listening to this makes me want to be skint and living again😂 1 in 10 again ❤
Hard times but happier times .It just goes off show you life is not all about money.
Love from Ireland brother
LEGEND Brian, RIP BIG MAN, what a very very sad day for music, condolences to family and band members, bless,
Ok who else is addicted to this song?? I simply have to watch it at least twice a day, never really thought about what the lyrics were (in some places) until i looked them up. I just love the groove, all the extra instruments contributing to a masterpiece that never gets old. Plus i love seeing them all looking younger, Ali is unrecognisable! He didnt yet have his "iconic voice" , that cant be copied its unique. Plus watching them dance is seeing them in their element early on forming.
just close my eyes and listen this amazing music
It’s brilliant, simple beat but unique sound
Totally agree with you !!!
An amazing song, and for me this and maybe The Earth dies screaming are in my top three favourite UB40 songs.
Happy days growing up with this classic , and others from the Brummie lads !!!
Me too
God bless the King of the sax. RIP Brian Travers.
I’ll second that Kathy.
✨💔 BRIAN.
He made this song what it is
Spot On the best RIP
I hope he is in heavan still playing the saxophone for god. He was so damn good and its a lost now that he is gone. R.I.P Brain Travers best saxophonist who has ever lived. I am glad and blessed to be able to hear him whit ub40.
Reggae as it should be: critical lyrics about societal abuses, catchy music and the pulsing bas lines. Magic
Brilliant song, so moving and atmospheric. UB40 such a great band.
R.I.P BRIAN TRAVERS
Thanks ub40 for continuing to sing for us throughout our lives 😘
RIP Brian Travers, this is your song - and what a song! You certainly left your mark on this world. Sincere condolences to Brian's family, bandmates and friends. UTV.
Sad sad day. Brian will be much missed but fondly remembered. PUSB

Met him twice, spoke to him on messenger, such a wonderful humble human being. Brian was the real deal. No hairs or graces. He was a working class man from Smethwick West Midlands. Not too far from where I grew up.. Ub40 forever, for those whom know and understand the music, the times, regional predujice. Race, colour creed. These guys made magic happen, and if your like me, I'll love ub until my dying day.
Stop being so nostalgic, i love it!
Now this ladies and gentlemen is what I call true proper music
Me too!
Most Definitely man😊❤
‘Protest’ songs. Every generation thinks they were the first, but we had the Jam and these, can’t complain.
Exactly saif. Not like the absolute c**p we have to listen to nowadays.
🙌
What an awesome band to see live.
RIP Brian Travers , you will be forever missed by your bandmates, family & friends. Life's too short to spend it squabbling. UB40 please settle your differences & play again.
Love from Canada.
Rip brian travers 💖

Still this song still beats anything in current year!
One of the first singles I ever bought. Oh the memories ❤ still wonderful in 2022
Its absolutely wonderful isn't it.
And now I'm young again and my knees don't hurt anymore. 😂
Cette chanson (écoutée à l'adolescence) me suivra toute ma vie... Elle est unique, c'est ma préférée d'UB40...
just after the sad news regarding brain travers......................dont worry brian your brilliant saxophone still lives on for ever ......rip
A haunting tale of Britain back in the day. Beautiful melancholia. ❤
It's about Africa
ub40 the best name ever for a band and given for a moral reason
Heard this song played at the end of the Birmingham v Man Utd game last night and i had heard it before and knew it sounded like UB40 so i had a quick search through their videos on here and found this, can't stop playing it now ! Great song
These dudes just blew the scene wide open back then. UB40 are just so fantastic. Love em long live UB40
61 now, this takes me back to being 18 in an instant,
1980 UB40 The Specials The Selector Madness The Beat The jam The Clash such fantastic memories
Such a magical time, amazingly talented group
Such a brilliant song, very deep....x
GREAT BAND 👍 THANK YOU ❤ 😊, SO SAD THEY SLAGGED OFF ONE OF 😢 MY FAVOURITE BANDS ,ADAM AND THE ANTS ,NO RESPECT 🙏.
the best UB40 song by far. It's a shame they did al the covers later. This song is 10 out of ten
Not so much a shame regarding the covers because UB40 wouldn't have became the band they were without the covers, let's not forget that the band are roughly made up of around 80% of non black fellas & to cover such iconic music like Ska & Rocksteady was unheard of unless of course if it wasn't for Twotone.
..or perhaps 1 in 10
18 albums of their own songs too ❤
I agree. This and One in Ten offered so much promise...then it was covers all the way. Brian was a lovely bloke by all accounts...sad day. 62 is young.
Such great music made better by that great sax. UB40 the kings of Reggae in them times and Still Good. RIP Mr Sax 🙂🦁🇬🇧
Long summer nights x
❤️ RIP ASTRO. ❤️
❤️ RIP BRIAN ❤️
WE FIGHT TILL THE END >
My favourite UB40 song of all time and I can never remember the bloody title!
+Martin Mitchell Have spent last 3 months trying to remember title, agree, its their best hit!
This and King
Totally agree. It's my favourite too and the title escapes every single bloody time! And it was the first single I ever bought for goodness sake!
Food for thought
This song was their breakthrough in Holland. I just went to high school, 12 years old. Imidiatly a big fan, bought a lot of music and dvd's all these years. Saw them on stage, heard them playing and singing. (Together as UB40)
Still am a big fan today as a (newly) grandma lol.
My grandson and future granddaughter (over 18 weeks she will be born) will both grow up with UB40 like my son did, my nephew and neeces did because of me. WE love UB40 in this family. Also my mother did get the UB40 virus because of us lol. For generations.
Timeless music = regae music. (Thank you Robert Nesta Marley, your legacy, we love you too)
I've got a broad taste, from the Britpop bands like UB40, Def Leppard right back to classic rock like Wings
Inner-City Birmingham, ca 1980, in musical form. They nailed it!
Une autre époque, on savourez vraiment notre vie....
RIP Brian Travers; you and your musical legacy will never be forgotten
Another legend gone☹️
As if two members are now dead, so sad! UB40 are actually everything l remember growing up that was happy x RIP
One of the first songs I heard from them even my old man liked them so much he took my tape

I survived. Not only that but I still love UB40 😎 What a waste of life that was you horrible abusers. What a waste of everyone's lives.... I will live the rest of my life in joy and being of service to other people. Just like I always said I would..... 🙏🙏🙏😎
Amazing story and song x
Love UB40. Love this track written by Robin Campbell.
The first band I went to see in 1982 at Glasgow Apollo just before ub44 was released.
What a song and production, they were so young and genius
Rip sir, legend

RIP Brian Travers and Astro. 2 legends passed away. Sad times for the band and everyone who loved them.
Absolutely love this song.
This was the first single they ever released and still one of my favourites.
absolutely; their covers are fine, but people who call them a covers band are just ignorant, these guys paid their dues a long long time ago.
Their best song. Well structured, fantastic message excellent production.
RIP Brian Travers , a classy gentleman..
Real lyrics, real instruments, real talent people!!!!!!! God bless 🙌 🙏 ❤️
i'm 13 and i Love this Song. the Lyrics are so deep they get you to think about the world and about what is going on in our political system
One of the best songs ever , RIP Brian

I love this favourite UB40 song so much. A timeless classic imo. Still listening to it in 2021 😀
Oh to be back in the 80s once again to relive all these memorable songs. Great music back then! 😄

FOOD 4 THOUGHT IS A GOOD SONG & I LOVE IT
Takes me back to the late eighties when I was a lil. My uncle used to play this on his music deck. This song influenced my taste in music ever since.
I so wish the band could get back together again. No voice like Ali,
Yes i agree i wish they could, life's too short for falling out, come on lads get back together, swallow your pride or some drugs and get back
Great tune 👌
Understatement
RIP Brian Travers, been a fan from the start. It was Brian’s sax that gave the band their unique sound and what drew me to them. So many great tunes, a very sad loss to the world. Thanks for the memories Brian.
God bless Brian 🙏
Outrageously good song
love mi Ub40 and I love this song to most people think I AM wired cause I'm 18 and I was brought up round all ths music

@@glenshea1967 you were fortunate to be young at such a time. Treasure your memories, cos it's been shit ever since.
Signing Off was massive in my home town Birmingham. RIP Brian Travers. The Sax was key instrument in this song.
Another brilliant song that symbolises everything that was wrong with this country in the 80's.
It's not just a song , it has meaning and probably reminds you something from that era. Unfortunately we've gone full circle and it's all happening again.
You've got that right mate!
Absolutely spot on. Tragic!
