I would say the biggest difference between the comic and the show is:
The comic treats the concept as parody.
while the show actually explores how that concept would work.

There isn't character development because they are living ads for comic books and any other products that can be sold through their existence. They are kept in check through drugs, money, & hookers and the company is always bailing them out of trouble.

That’s a huge misconception of the book that I think if you read it, you’ll understand why the show is as good as it is. Homelander in the show is one to one with the books, essentially the same character and when people say these characters don’t have depth that’s just wrong because the entire story is a culmination of butcher and hughies life post there supe trauma. A great example of this is the books involving beckys life with butcher, his reaction to what happened to her and the end of the entire story which is where hughie and butcher go head to head and end up with a story that is very heartfelt and one of the most memorable endings to a story you’ll ever read. The beginning may come off as really edgy but technically so does the show, but once you get deep into it, you love the characters as much as you do in the show.

The point of the comic is edginess for edginess sake written by a guy who tries too hard, imo. It doesn’t really add much to the story and makes it rigid and stale.

In the comics the writer made it a clear point to show how much he despises heroes, just making every one of them scummy in the worst way possible, leaving no room for humanity, and then had them all killed. In the show, the characters are a lot more fleshed out, and despite being hated, people can still root for them at times. Like when A-Train killed that one racist hero.

Garth Ennis wanted zero things redeemable about the heroes it's brutal in one hand but it makes me prefer the show tbh
