  • Nissan workers in Mississippi rejected a bid to unionize over the weekend.
For nearly a decade, the U.A.W. tried to organize workers at Nissan Motor Co Ltd's assembly plant in Mississippi, challenging the company's wages, safety record and commitment to treating African-American workers fairly.
VICE News visited Canton, MS where Nissan automotive plant workers were attempting to unionize in a historically anti-union state.

Fascists? So Mr. not fascist American capitalist - tell me - forcing someone in America - working in an American Government job - that is inadvertently funded by you and me, the taxpayer - to join a union - that traditional funnels a majority of its dues to one political party - a party that I don't support - is somehow - what - Apple pie and Chevrolet? Well obviously it was wrong because it is now illegal to do so.

    • @rocsaltjohn
      @rocsaltjohn 5 лет назад +9

Why don't you use google to define Fascist? You appear to not understand the definition of the word. (I was going to let your ignorance go but you forced me with your statement). Simple - Forcing any worker to join a union in a public sector job is wrong. The union (just like any other business) shouldn't be able to use a taxpayer-funded job as a way to force membership which they then intern funnel 95% to one political party. It WAS wrong as the Supreme Court ended that madness. Unions should have to earn membership without favor from the Democratic party just like every other not-for-profit business. It's "fascist" to believe that you should deny someone a job for not joining an orginization you politically don't allign with.

We had a Ford representative come to our Auto Repair class and I asked him why Ford charged extra for things like heaters, which required a special order and 9 month wait if you wanted a car without a heater.. He said most customers wanted the freedom to order a car without a heater.
Now, most Americans know that the American Auto makers were lying to us because they thought their fellow Americans were stupid scum (like you are demanding to be thought of.) So, I bought the Datsun because I was treated as an intelligent adult. Now, my habit was set and it was foreign cars for life.

Most people in a major city in the north where cost of living is higher, $26.00 per hour is great money. These people are unbelievable. When OSHA and workers comp premiums kicked in forcing corporations to provide a safe work environment the union no longer became an asset, but a liability.

Hokum Isolated union UAW book worker is probably making $15.00 more per hour then a non union auto worker. The UAW makes money on the employee dues and investing the money made. So out of a high dollar per hour union job, then take out, health benefits, retirement benefits, union fees, etc., and in the end there not making that much more. And with unions merit is no longer the skill for which you are, paid, and employeed. Union work status is based on time in the union and dues paid, not merit. It's a completely antiquated labor system that is slowly dying. The last strongholds are Chicago, Philadelphia and NYC, Boston has a few hold outs but not nearly as the big three cities. Most unions that remain are construction unions, which from personal experience bully, threaten and use chaos to force work contracts. History has shown us what unions do, and what they promise to do.

There are tradeoffs to everything. Making 26/hour in a state with the highest purchasing power in the country is not bad. For every dollar that you spend in Mississippi you get1.16 in goods and services. I personally wouldn't vote for unions in that situation. However that may change. I worked Kroger which is unionized if you have Seniority you get 15/hours and better health insurance than the Managers. But if you're new, you make minimum wage and you won't brake 9 /hour for three years and that's working full time. You work at Walmart you start at 9 and top out at 11 or 12 in three years. It all depends who you are what position you're in. If I were in the forklift operator's position. I would take any academic funding that Nissan offers get certified as electro mechanical technician. If they're pay a forklift operator 27/hour they must be paying there skilled labor a shit ton. If they layoff, I would rather be layoff with a certificate that my employer payed for.

@TheRedwings05 College grads are not dumb. It's just that we would rather do hard work with our head instead of with our backs. Without a degree, you have to either be very talented or do physically demanding work to earn a good living. Also, it is nice to have upward mobility, which comes a whole lot easier with a degree. The guy with dreadlocks seems to be a cool guy, and probably gets all the p**sy he wants from his significant other (who is shown in the video), but his success is dependent upon factory work. He has to work hard and deal with the possiblity of unions.
With that said, I am not someone who wants to spend all my time on some noisy assembly line. I like the fact that I actually need to go to the gym and don't get all my exercise from doing physically demanding work all day.

@TheRedwings05 - One college grad was asked this question: In what state do they host the Kentucky Derby? His answer- Wisconsin. In some instances I
can't argue with you on that one.
However consider this: One of my floor supervisors overseeing the manufacturing team that I lead was a dental hygienist who knew absolutley NOTHING about building cars. Nervously she confessed feeling inadequate about this position she was thrust into. We team leaders assured her we would do the best we could in assisting her in making the best decisions for our team members in building the cars in the most efficient manner. And of course upper management didnt like the fact that us guys and gals who actually BUILD the damn things were trying to help her do her job in directly overseeing us. So they pulled her aside and told her to basically not trust us. But rather to shoot orders from the hip which included overriding the decision making that management empowered us to make during the build process to begin with. Which of course caused chaos on the floor because it interfered with us building the cars in the right way.
So here is something to ponder over: Who was the real dummy?
The college graduate? Or upper know it all management?

That's a little too simplified. There are cases where you may have to wait for someone to do a job because it's in his job description and not yours....but there are instances in private companies where you have to do 3 other people's jobs that aren't at all in your job description. There are also cases of promotion by seniority in unions, but there are also cases in private companies where some dipshit who knows nothing about a job gets promoted to it and does a terrible job....it's pros and cons.
I tell you the argument of "Well I could make more money on my own." is moot...I mean it's just market economics; the union has power in negotiations because the person negotiating is negotiating for everysingle employee and can get a much better benefit package...you alone in a private company can only negotiate for yourself, you have less power. Now if we're talking about going into business for yourself then sure, you may be able to make more entirely on your own, but not everyone wants to be a business owner.

Keith Richards Liver unions in manufacturing Construction assembly line and other types of machine work are generally not necessary.
was saying unions aren't good doesn't take into account that there are grocery store unions that keep people from being abused by managers at the grocery store. that there are no unions for most hotels and that the hotel workers often work longer than 8 hours with no brakes and have very poor working conditions no healthcare or retirement benefits for long-term employees. there's also no support and unionization within the agricultural sector meaning that the number one abused employees in the country work in agriculture and food manufacturing. that's awesome lack of adequate negotiation and representation in the it sector which no one talks about the Elder Care sector which is not unionized and no one speaks about it is also not included under the union of healthcare workers or nurses that's also the issues when it comes to administrative staff. often people who work in admin as in secretaries front desk staff concierge's and other front desk or paper pushers as they're often called work 10-hour days don't get paid any overtime and don't have competitive rates off and being paid the minimum wage for the country to do the work of a whole office there are exceptions obviously to all the things I've stated but not very many and most of those occur in large cities on the coasts where the highest wages are no one in the Midwest mountainous regions or the South gets the kind of pay that is necessary to live by in this is where you see most of the Union fights happening.
we should all support food service worker unions because you're waitress shouldn't make $2 an hour she should at least get to be included in the minimum wage for the country. you shouldn't pay the people who clean your hotel room $5 an hour plus any tips the previous occupant decided to leave for turnover. maintenance and repair staff who are not included in HVAC contracts are often it support individuals that work in poor conditions with no ventilation and improper training such as electrician to install lights for the city people who work for the Power and electric companies but our subcontractors who do quick repairs and individuals who work in the Computer Sciences but as a technician so people who repair cars or reprogram cell phones and repair electronics for a living Austin will get paid at least 12 an hour but will not get overtime insurance through their employer or any retirement benefits.
there's a false assumption that unions are necessary because everyone is included in the minimum wage this isn't true unions will be 100% irrelevant and everyone will be happy to disband them once the entire population of US citizens are all paid based on the federal minimum wage but unfortunately that has not happened yet and so as long as everyone ignores this and they stay in their blind spots you will end up disband and unions and saying you don't need them while willfully ignoring all of the sectors that never got a chance to organize and ask for better wages to be included in the minimum wage.
have you ever wondered about how much you get paid to make TV dinners that cost a dollar or if the person who cooked your food for your airplane flight spit in your food because he only gets paid $6 an hour and has no Health Care? what about if the person who made your kids school lunches had to come to work with pneumonia because otherwise they would be fired from their $9 an hour position of cooking food all day?
it's these people that we ignore that need unions not the manufacturing sector the construction sector the fishing sector

bkminchilog1, I do agree that we should weigh both sides. Workers need protection from abuse but employers also need protection from slackers and mean-spirited individuals. Not all employers are as rich as the corporate elitists. There are small business owners who cannot afford the benefits some people ask of them. People who spit in your food out of spite for receiving less pay are mean-spirited, especially if the customer was innocent of any wrongdoing. However, it seems that many waiters prefer being tipped than getting minimum wage without tips when asked their preference (based on some videos I have viewed), In other countries, servers don't receive tips but do receive minimum wage and are still expected to do their well without tips. Many unions have become more about making more demands despite having better work environments and many union workers have become slackers because they know they are protected instead of being evaluated based on merit and good performance.

I used to work for Disney World as an intern and if you were a Union worker there it was downright impossible to get fired no matter how lazy you were. As an intern you could get fired for just about any offense and I knew a lot of interns that got fired for what the union workers got away with on a daily basis. As a result the union workers knew they could get away with a lot and the interns had to pick up the slack. My coordinator advised me to not talk back to them even if they were clearly not doing their job and putting it off on me because they said that the union workers would go to HR and accuse you of being a racist and result in you getting fired since they had union backing. They had seen it happen before. Its ironic the HR department turned our to be the most racist department.

With the labor laws we have now, the only thing most unions do any more is drive up the price of unskilled labor, that forces businesses to move over seas.
