A friend of mine has a stove like that one he puts 18” wood in it just chunked up in the round it heats his cabin to 74 deg for three days before he reloads it just a thought beautiful place awesome lady and cook Chris some lucky to have beautiful mate

Hello from here in Zephyrhills Florida where we will hit 39 degrees today so it’s not very warm here in sunny Florida either. But I’m from upstate NY and have been in -32 degree weather before which is why I now live in Florida lol. But this reminded me of growing up in NY so I just had to subscribe to your channel. I was born and raised in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York and had no electricity or running water ever so I can sympathize with what you’re going through to get everything up and going or warm enough to run. Great video you 2. The hardest thing is warming up the cabin. We go up to our cabin and it takes a full day to get it all warmed up. Sure like seeing the old cabin. You have a great location for your solar. Putting out good. Maybe there is still hope for the grampa spruce. LOL That Tundra is like Little Griff Off Grid Alberta workhorse. Those are great sleds. South Dakota, we had serious cold about 60+ below & some of the cattle had so much frozen condensation on their faces they couldn’t see & they could barely breathe. We had to herd some steers into our brick garage which just happened to be empty. It saved them. Good to see you making the best of the cold weather, thanks for posting.

Northern Wisconsin has had wind chills -35 F at night during the last few days. Yesterday our high was -1F. I saw some guy get out of his car at the grocery store, wearing shorts! This seems to be the latest craze here. Some students wear shorts every day.

FYI, the colder it is the more efficient solar panels are. When designing a system wire size is determined by the coldest average temperature for that region. Panels can produce 120% more than their label. Your cabin is beautiful, love large front porch.

Love the temperature and the lifestyle. In Australia, we often get 40 in January too (but it is +40C or even +47C in my home state of SA in Jan or Feb) 😀
@@OffGridWithChrisandKristie No, I hate the hot weather, it’s dreadful. I remember being a child in Adelaide South Australia and spending Christmas day looking at Christmas storybooks about snowmen, sleighs and people singing carols wrapped in fleece clothing while Santa landed on the rooftops. I thought how lucky they were as I sweated in the heat as my mum cooked roast turkey and plum pudding adding even more heat to the non-air-conditioned house. We would get 40° or 42° over January or February but Adelaide now gets 46° and northern South Australia gets high 40’s. My wife thinks I am bonkers during the summer as my RUclips suggestions usually involve Siberian people from Yakutsk visiting log cabins, chopping wood, making fires and cooking stews (or videos like yours) after I have sat in the lounge with the A/C on. So you could say that I have a fascination with the cold. When I retire, I want to have a white Christmas in Helsinki or the like and my number one destination for my bucket list before I die is to visit the big “A” - That’s Antarctica, not America or Asia. (no offense to these destinations). I am not sure if I could cope with the Eastern plateau that dropped to -94°C in the 1980s but I would give it a go.
Great question! The little cabin was built in the early 70s and the rec room (the bigger cabin) was built in the early 60s by the Lutheran Church. They used it as a bible camp and retreat. Awesome life, Mountain man ma self, We're in the New Mexico mountains, 7500 feet above sea level, made an air tight stove out of a 55 gallon oil barrel 6 years ago, less cutting more heat, it does get cold here but thankful not that cold, watched this with my 6 year old, we use cast iron too, made me hungry 😂😂😂 can do almost anything in cast iron! 👍
That’s a high elevation! We sit at about 2400’ here. That’s a nice big wood stove size! I love my cast iron. Cast iron pizza is one of our favourite treats! Mountain life must be amazing!
@@OffGridWithChrisandKristie Mountain life is temperamental, we live close to the end of a village but not far enough for me, sort of the Jeremiah Johnson and Grizzly Adams sort, we have ranch property up at 10,000 would prefer there, but tenuous with family, certainly prefer the company of the Deer, Ducks,Elk and a Golden eagle who roosts in the vicinity, couple of years ago my 4 year old at the time, we watched a period dinner prepared in 1820, good ol cast iron and a hearth, with tri pods and swing arms, she was amazed at how versatile that kind of kitchen cooking can do, I still have a Robert shaw gas stove, and a 40's Gibson refrigerator that still works 80 years later, 4 generations. I teach my kid what works, cause in the woods or sticks as it wer, things have to work, btw she loved the snowmobile 🤣

Should live in big cabin and maintain sanity duh biggest heater stove that’s where I would live even tho the changeover would be overwhelming but as you say don’t sit around much the big cabin should be go to cabin

Nice to meet you, I live about 6 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, it gets cold but nothing like what you have. Very little snow but we get those big ocean storms (hurricanes). It gets very hot.@@OffGridWithChrisandKristie

The very short summer season up here is a real problem sometimes when it comes to accomplishing tasks and having a little fun. We would love to visit your part of the world some day, the climate, the animals, the culture, the food…. All sound so exotic!!

Northern Wisconsin has had wind chills -35 F at night during the last few days. Yesterday our high was -1F. I saw some guy get out of his car at the grocery store, wearing shorts! This seems to be the latest craze here. Some students wear shorts every day.
Haha there’s no way I’d want to wear shorts in winter! But sometimes Chris gets the wood stove rockin in the house and it’s so warm I can wear shorts inside 😂

Georgia! That’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go! I’d love to have a peach 🍑 from a tree. We can’t grow stone fruit where we live, it’s just to cold, the trees don’t survive the winter.
Is peach pie really a thing? I’ve heard about it, and it sounds WONDERFULLY delicious.

FYI, the colder it is the more efficient solar panels are. When designing a system wire size is determined by the coldest average temperature for that region. Panels can produce 120% more than their label. Your cabin is beautiful, love large front porch.

Love the temperature and the lifestyle. In Australia, we often get 40 in January too (but it is +40C or even +47C in my home state of SA in Jan or Feb) 😀

@@OffGridWithChrisandKristie No, I hate the hot weather, it’s dreadful. I remember being a child in Adelaide South Australia and spending Christmas day looking at Christmas storybooks about snowmen, sleighs and people singing carols wrapped in fleece clothing while Santa landed on the rooftops. I thought how lucky they were as I sweated in the heat as my mum cooked roast turkey and plum pudding adding even more heat to the non-air-conditioned house. We would get 40° or 42° over January or February but Adelaide now gets 46° and northern South Australia gets high 40’s.
My wife thinks I am bonkers during the summer as my RUclips suggestions usually involve Siberian people from Yakutsk visiting log cabins, chopping wood, making fires and cooking stews (or videos like yours) after I have sat in the lounge with the A/C on. So you could say that I have a fascination with the cold. When I retire, I want to have a white Christmas in Helsinki or the like and my number one destination for my bucket list before I die is to visit the big “A” - That’s Antarctica, not America or Asia. (no offense to these destinations). I am not sure if I could cope with the Eastern plateau that dropped to -94°C in the 1980s but I would give it a go.

Great question! The little cabin was built in the early 70s and the rec room (the bigger cabin) was built in the early 60s by the Lutheran Church. They used it as a bible camp and retreat.

Awesome life, Mountain man ma self, We're in the New Mexico mountains, 7500 feet above sea level, made an air tight stove out of a 55 gallon oil barrel 6 years ago, less cutting more heat, it does get cold here but thankful not that cold, watched this with my 6 year old, we use cast iron too, made me hungry 😂😂😂 can do almost anything in cast iron! 👍
That’s a high elevation! We sit at about 2400’ here.

@@OffGridWithChrisandKristie Mountain life is temperamental, we live close to the end of a village but not far enough for me, sort of the Jeremiah Johnson and Grizzly Adams sort, we have ranch property up at 10,000 would prefer there, but tenuous with family, certainly prefer the company of the Deer, Ducks,Elk and a Golden eagle who roosts in the vicinity, couple of years ago my 4 year old at the time, we watched a period dinner prepared in 1820, good ol cast iron and a hearth, with tri pods and swing arms, she was amazed at how versatile that kind of kitchen cooking can do, I still have a Robert shaw gas stove, and a 40's Gibson refrigerator that still works 80 years later, 4 generations. I teach my kid what works, cause in the woods or sticks as it wer, things have to work, btw she loved the snowmobile 🤣
When the snow squeaks like that when you walk on it, you know its cold!!
Yes! You’re totally right. The snowflakes get super sharp and dry and hard, and as a result also super noisy.
