I know that nowadays if it’s supposed to be dark they just make the screen black, but back in they day they liked the people watching the show to be able to see.

Riley accusing Buffy of being happy about Walsh’s death, after he saw Walsh tried to kill her, reeeeeaallly just illustrates to me how little he actually knows Buffy. He certainly seems to think he knows her, or at least the idea he has of her in his brain.
Well, they've only been together for a short while.
Riley is actually a huge Captain America reference. Just like Willow has Scarlet Witch and Jean Grey moments, Buffy banters like Spider-Man, Oz is very much like the Hulk, and many more. Whedon and some of the other writers were huge comic book fans and brought a lot of comic book tropes into the realm of TV.
You all should do a double episode next week. You will not regret it.

Fun fact: the Polgara demon (the one with the skewer) was named after a fan of the show on the official message board The Bronze. The writers spent some time there and David Fury chose the demon name as a tribute to Polgara the fan. The name was originally from a fantasy book series by David Eddings.
Used to love those David Eddings books when I was much younger (first read them at 15, and re-read many times), so I immediately recognised the name from that when I saw it on Buffy. Hadn't realised that was a second-hand reference via a fan!
Best books ever..The Belgariad and The Malloreon…Polgara is a terrific sorceress..this book was also ripped off by JKR in Harry Potter, but Garion was way better. Better writing, better plots, great characters..

@@evesapple because David Eddings wrote The Oawn Of Prophecy before any of the Harry Potter stuff, she basically reworked the same story..orphaned boy becomes a sorcerer..I think Eddings’ work is much better, but I believe the family has a strict ban on anyone turning his stuff into a movie..a shame now, I think a Netflix series would be great..

I think it would’ve been more effective if we had seen Adam as a human, maybe he was good friends with Riley for a few episode, seemingly killed, then brought back by Walsh, it would carry more weight when he’s like, who am I?
The scene with the kid is an homage to the old FRANKENSTEIN movie where the monster meets a little girl and accidentally kills her.

lol Angel is definitely still a demon, just with a soul. he's a vampire therefore a demon. Just with a soul. spike is a vampire/demon but has no soul, just a chip in his head that prevents him from hurting people. doesn't make him good, just backed into a corner.

The vignette is from the camera they're shooting on. That's how lazy this "HD" transfer was. Honestly so baffling how they treated this series after the fact.
It was also never meant to be expanded, Joss wanted it specifically to be fit on old style tv screens.
the forest being closeted headcanon has been around for a while, it kinda makes more sense and imo makes him a bit more interesting as a character

Oh boy you don't even know what you just said (well, you probably do because you guys uploaded this 2 weeks ago, so...).
So that scene where it looks like someone is watching them from a far, it’s because the show was originally aired in 4:3. They used a specific lens to get that shot and would have cropped out the extra for broadcast.
After season 3 most networks were pushing people to shoot in 16:9 HD so the networks could push “now in HD.” Joss however never wanted it to be HD or 16:9. So even though he shot season 4-7 in 16:9 and it aired on the HD networks which was usually like a channel with a decimal point in it, on the non-HD channel he still output the show in 4:3.
So if you watched channel 12 here in vegas you got Buffy, at a low quality but as joss wanted. If you changed to 12.1 you got HD Buffy. But with no care taken to shots of extras or crew on the sides of the frame. Joss only cared about what would be seen in the 4:3 version.
You’ll notice similar issues in Angel during transition scenes or sometimes during someone’s visions. Where the image is clearly not reaching the ends of the frame

@@JenLight actually that’s a misconception. There’s the 16:9 version that was the exact same as the 4:3 just shown on a WB’s HD channel but other than that exactly the same. The HD remaster is what’s on Amazon, FB, and the blu-ray set. Hulu’s version isn’t the remastered version

_Goodbye Iowa_ was titled so for Riley saying goodbye to everything that's shaped who he is from the start of his run on the series (and definitely earlier) until now. In other words The Initiative. Not about Riley's death, which many fans hoped for at the time of airing. The character wasn't initially liked. To the point where the actor didn't want to do comic con appearances for years.
Hmmmn. ive watched this series multiple times and only now connected the cartoon they were watching at xander's place to something else. hahaha. cant wait til you see it , when who knows hahaha!
If Xander still remembers soldier knowledge, does Buffy still have 18th century culture and etiquette knowledge? Do all those kids who were demons still know demon languages and lore? Did Larry ever crave the open sea before he died??

Just a bit of a clarificarion about Angel and Spike, as some of the things said didn't quite hit the mark.
Angel isn't a person who has the powers of a vampire. Angel is a very unique being. When made, a demon expelled his soul and fused with his body, taking on his traits. When he was cursed, his soul was put back in his body, alongside the demon, and the soul was given control over the body, imprisoning the demon, to torture it. So, Angel is a dual being, a demon (Angelus) and a soul (Angel) in one body. When he vamps out, the soul is allowing the demon to add capabolities and powers, but it also relinqueshes some control, like seen in the season 3 finale. Angel is very much a vampire still. He's dead and his heart doesn't beat. Also, there will be more specifics being shown in the show Angel. Angel does some heavy lifting defining lore in the Buffyverse that this show won't touch on in dialogue, but will make use of.
Spike is very different. Angel's soul gives him genuine human emotions and a conscience. Spike has a leash. He has no soul, no conscience. I think Spike is unique, but it's a theory of mine. In the episodes in season 2, the Judge sensed humanity in Spike and Drucilla. My theory is that he sensed it in Spike. Spike has empathy, as he's always had insights into people, especially Buffy. He's always so focused on love too, although not having a conscience tends to make it more like obsessions. Still, he's been a lot more self sacrificing than normal vampires. Still, he doesn't have a soul, which makes him very different from Angel.
Also, ss to why Buffy dosen't kill him. There is loads of episodes that add to slayer lore. Part of the lore is Buffy learning that she is the judge of the demon realm. That she has to judge demons for actually being worthy of death. Since Spike is incapable of harming humans, Buffy not only can't kill Spike, she's obligated to protect him. More, that obligation is passed on to the Scoobies, including Giles, where they aren't allowed to kill Spike either. This is long enough, so I won't bother to explain how Buffy has come to these conclusions, but if you watch closely for it, you will see it. They will all make little comments supporting this, how thay can't kill Spike, even though many times it would make their lives easier.

The Normies seem pretty Pro-Riley so far. A lot of people, when the show aired, and reactors who have watched it since, hate Riley with a passion. Most of it is because people loved Angel so much and Riley was his replacement as Buffy's love interest. I didnt like Riley when the show aired, but have cooled on him in recent years and understand his character a bit better.
I liked Riley okay in season four. And then Season Five happened, and I was cool with never seeing that ahole again

Actually it is fairly normal, especially for underground facilities to be significantly larger than what is normally seen by even those who work there. Subways for example have large areas where most people don't enter on a regular basis. It would have been unusual for the Initiative to not have areas where most Initiative agents don't know about.

In Season 2 Spike seemed to be the big bad, but was mostly replaced for the second half with Angelus, so it may be the same situation, Walsh replaced by Adam.

How I think about this title is that this is Riley's version of innocence. Back in that 2nd season episode, Buffy was forced to face some harsh realities concerning the demon realm and her role as the demon slayer. Namely, that she was then obligated, as the slayer, to kill Angelus and that her actions lead to the death of Angel.
In this episode, Riley lost his innocence. He found out the job he loved gave him so much meaning was a lie. He was betrayed by all the authority figures he had faith in. Even, in his eyes, Buffy has betrayed him, hiding a vampire from him.
It comes down to a major shift in paradigms. Likely, he grew up being the best at everything. The all American boy. The lead player on the highschool sports team. The person evrryine looked up to and followed. Even here, he lead the team and was Maggie's favorite.
Now though, Buffy is the best, the strongest, the most capable. She's also doing things like keepibg Spike alive.
Its definitely a we're not in Kansas any more type of feeling for him. Just Iowa instead of Kansas.
Quick Notes that aren’t spoilers cus you should know this already:
- Angel DOES have the “Angelous” demon inside him. It’s just being contained because of the Angel SOUL.
Timeline:
Angel was a human.
Angel was killed by Darla and turned into a Vampire which means his SOUL left and a Demon moved in. Calls himself ANGELOUS
Angelous is cursed by gipsys, meaning they put the soul back into the body causing ANGELOUS to be in a metaphorical jail within the body.
Angel(the soul) now is in control of the body with Angelous contained. Which is why he(Angel) still feels and remembers everything the demon did and feels like shit about it and feels the need to make up for it in a brooding way. He’s depressed.
If Angel experiences one moment of PURE happiness, it the soul(Angel) will be snatched away and free Angelous to once again control the body.
BOOM!
Witchcraft is something you learn to do. You aren't born a witch. If Anya wanted to do witchcraft she just needs spells, potions and trinkets, which she can get at the Magic Box. Being human doesn't excluded you from doing witchcraft.
I have suggestion of the show that y’all might like to watch ❤ it’s called Legacies and is the spin-off of The originals(if y’all know vampire diaries and Originals y’all will like this show !! If not it’s a spin-off so y’all don’t have to watch originals) show is about vampires witches and werewolves and the main character is Hope Mikealson who is the daughter of Klaus Mikealson and has the power to be all 3 magical species so she’s VERY powerful(it’s very similar to Buffy )
This stuff was a low Buffy point for me. Neither the initiative nor the Frankenstein monster worked imo. It does get a lot better after though.
Everyone keeps harping on Riley for not believing Buffy after what Walsh did but he didnt actually see anything. He walked in after Buffy's earpiece was removed and literally just saw walsh and a shot of a tunnel wall until Buffy picked it back up.
I detest riley with everything in my being but I enjoy your reactions so much it makes him bearable.

Kinda hate this episode... It's not like it's bad... it's just too much cringey lovey dovey stuff for Biley instead of the fun stuff we got from episodes 7-12.
But I do appreciate that ya'll acknowledge how hard this would be for Riley. His entire life, everything he believes in, is being called into question. That's not an easy thing to go through.
Goodbye Iowa a very average episode, but sets up the later half of S4 now we have established that Walsh was planning something very sinister with her creation Adam, and not only experimenting on the HSTs, but also the Commandos of The Initiative, as Riley is having symptoms of poisoning. Some great little comedy moments with Xander again, and of course to homage to the original Frankenstein when Adam meets the child.

Can you do a better job letting us know when you are do Angel? For a long time u wouldn't even mention the day then other times you'd mention the day but not the time, sorry I can't watch twitch literally 24/7. Your website and twitch schedule doesn't have anything either. Also there are certain episodes of Buffy and Angel that directly overlap basically being a part 1 and part 2. You should try to align the viewing if at all possible.

That dark scene in the park with the boy is paying homage to the story of Frankenstein where he kills a boy. A reference that goes over the heads of most reactors and teenage girls (target audience)’s heads. 😅

If you're referring to their reactions to the Tara and Willow spell scenes, those are explicitly sexual metaphors. I would understand if English isn't your first language, but the things that Tara and Willow say to each other about spells are all written to be overt sexual double entendres.
