You can connect it to your current router without ethernet, but it will only serve you as an access point. In order to achieve best performance, you should connect it to your modem via ethernet and let it serve as your main and only router.
Works fantastic as wifi. Easy setup and dependable. Only glitch is that it is incompatible with any doorbell as the wifi switches back and forth between 2.4GHz and 5 GHz. Yes. You need the internet from your cable modem because it will be used to distribute it using google wifi ethernet connection or wifi clients. It don't has internet at all if you don't connect to your main router.
This takes your current internet subscription to your Internet Service Provider and improves the hardware and functionality. Your ISP provides the internet connect (and a router if you opt to do that), it's your job to utilize it as best you can. I do recommend purchasing your own simple modem instead of paying the renters fee for your ISP's router/modem 2-in-one. Google Home will act as your main router connecting to your modem, just talk to your ISP about what you need to do to make that happen.
Great review. I recently debated between this and the Netgear orbi with the wall mounted satellites. I am a fan of Netgear, but the implementation is not the best as mobile devices stay stuck to an access point until the signal is just too weak. Static devices are flawless. But I've heard Google WiFi is all the same network is connects to closes/strongest signal. On advice on the video itself, try a lens that is not so wide...in you black screen and unboxing scenes your hands and arms are disproportionate to your body. Try a more natural lens. My $0.02.
Hey thanks for the comment! I'm redoing some things right now with my studio and we'll see how it goes. I tried using my 12-35 instead of my 20mm in the next few videos. I'll keep an eye out on the optics and see if I can get it better. Thanks so much!
Do I need a previous router or internet service to use this? Or can I use this just on its own? (Just moved into a new house.. would love to try this out before committing to an internet service ie att or spectrum)!
So does it boost speeds or just amplify the signal so it has more range? I have terrible internet with 800 kb/s with Ethernet and it makes it impossible to play online without hotspots.
I would personally disable AT&T wifi. Other than that it should work perfectly fine, just make sure all conections run trought it or you run issues of double NAT.
it's great, I did upgrade to 1gb and its right it gets about 500 up and 500 download with wifi, but connected it gets 1gb down and up so it's more limited to wifi
I found myself locking on to the Trumpet playing and mentally tuning out what you were saying. Why don't you decide what it is that you want your viewers to absorb and STICK TO THAT?

Hey Thanks. You know I'm not sure where I heard that, but I can't find how to do this. Here's what I did find - there's a service called IFTTT(If this then that) that has some extra functionality you can add to your Google wifi that looks interesting. Here's what I found ifttt.com/google_wifi
I believe the 2nd one you would put in another spot where it gets a good connection then it would shoot then connection out further than your 1st one reaches.
Ant Rod if this is anything like the OnHub then it’ll work with a gateway or modem. I disabled the gateway’s Wifi obviously, and my only issue is NAT-2 which can be resolved by going into bridged mode if available.
I’ve had mine for a little over a year now. At first it was great and Wifi was always smooth and fast (100 mbps). But lately it was giving me issues saying one WiFi point would be weak and I tried moving them closer together or rearranging them and I still would get the same problem. For some reason it has been inconsistent with the speeds that I get. Also I noticed that they don’t do the greatest with maintaining speeds the farther you’re away from one of the points. I’ll get slow speeds from one room away which is about 20 feet away and I can’t get understand. So I’m not sure if this is just a software issue or just simply from my ISP with having inconsistent speeds. So generally it’s been okay for me, I’d give it a 7/10. I might consider something more powerful though with better range than this. It is easy to manage though for someone who isn’t too tech savvy but I prefer having more control over the settings such as assigning devices to one band and such.
Hi, was using the velop mesh tri-band..it did solve my dead wifi spots issues..I live in singapore, BTO(built to order)flat,92 square metres. The main problem is the metal beams in walls n bomb shelter room, preventing signals going across the entire flat. The issues i had was with the app n ipv6/4(Think that's how it's called)Not sure which but was unable to access the webpage according to tech support. I have been using Google Wi-Fi since just before Thanksgiving. Initially, things were fine. Now it is the most frustrating device that I own. I have been talking to customer service (in Southeast Asia) on a daily basis, several hours a day. They can't explain how my ISP provides 100 MBPS yet my devices only produce 5 or fewer Mbps. They've had me reset the mesh units five or six times. The list of things they've had me do are endless and of course, none of them work. Of course, I can't take the Google Wi-Fi back because it's purchased at Best Buy and you only get 30 days. So I'm stuck with this crap. Watching television or movie on my fire stick is frustrating because the buffering is ridiculous. Initially, I could watch a movie or television and it was great.

Google Home will act as your main router connecting to your modem, just talk to your ISP about what you need to do to make that happen.
do all of the points have to be connected to an ethernet cable ? or just one
Just one.
I just moved into a house with no cable company connections. Can I still use Google WiFi? Where do I plug the Ethernet cable into?
Google WiFi needs internet to work. You really have no internet options?
@@TheSearchForAwesome my pleasure man. Keep at it.
On my google fi I gets speeds of 700+Mbps but when I do a online test it’s 40 ish I really don’t understand??
Do I need a previous router or internet service to use this?
Or can I use this just on its own?
(Just moved into a new house.. would love to try this out before committing to an internet service ie att or spectrum)!
You need a modem to supply the internet. You'll just plug that into the Google WiFi.
The Search For Awesome thank you!!!
2:03 Love to see a Pebble Time user
At 3:45 he says "Speeds can drop to as LOW as 50mbs" LOL! I was on the internet at 28kbps :D
Lol, back in the day I was too :)
So does it boost speeds or just amplify the signal so it has more range?
I have terrible internet with 800 kb/s with Ethernet and it makes it impossible to play online without hotspots.
It can't boost speed, but as you said it extends the range of the internet that your sending out
Alright thanks for replying so fast.
Will this do its full potential if connected to a modem/router combo that at&t provided me?
I would personally disable AT&T wifi. Other than that it should work perfectly fine, just make sure all conections run trought it or you run issues of double NAT.
it's great, I did upgrade to 1gb and its right it gets about 500 up and 500 download with wifi, but connected it gets 1gb down and up so it's more limited to wifi
Nice! Glad to hear that!
I found myself locking on to the Trumpet playing and mentally tuning out what you were saying.
Why don't you decide what it is that you want your viewers to absorb and STICK TO THAT?
50mbps at the lowest?? I get 10 on a good day with my wifi
ouch.......
At about the 5:20 mark, you said it has the ability to control with your voice through Google home. I cannot find that info. Can you clarify or point me in the right direction? Great video by the way!
Hey Thanks. You know I'm not sure where I heard that, but I can't find how to do this. Here's what I did find - there's a service called IFTTT(If this then that) that has some extra functionality you can add to your Google wifi that looks interesting. Here's what I found ifttt.com/google_wifi
I guess they are changing things. I have IFTTT, but you can't make a recipe to connect the two
Will try to buy one upon seeing your review, let you know soon about my experience thanks!
Awesome! Keep me posted :)
Great video, subbed 👍
Great video. Thanks!
Good video. I'll check them out.
The app is not available in Mexico, I bought it in the USA and I can not use it in Mexico, do you know when the app will be ready?
Bummer - no idea! Sorry!
Change your VPN on your phone to the US so you can access the US app store. From there, download the app.
I just subscribed!! Thanks for the review video I am going to buy mine from Costco! (:
Let me know what you think
does each unit need to be plugged into the home ethernet?
I believe the 2nd one you would put in another spot where it gets a good connection then it would shoot then connection out further than your 1st one reaches.
Does this work with combination modem/ routers or only modems.
Ant Rod if this is anything like the OnHub then it’ll work with a gateway or modem. I disabled the gateway’s Wifi obviously, and my only issue is NAT-2 which can be resolved by going into bridged mode if available.
So do you need wifi already or is it wifi itself bc i have no wifi at all
You need internet first. This just makes the internet wireless and easily accessible.
How is the firewall
Will this help my wifi that is less than 1mbps??
Hi, was using the velop mesh tri-band..it did solve my dead wifi spots issues..I live in singapore, BTO(built to order)flat,92 square metres. The main problem is the metal beams in walls n bomb shelter room, preventing signals going across the entire flat. The issues i had was with the app n ipv6/4(Think that's how it's called)Not sure which but was unable to access the webpage according to tech support. Thinking of giving G.Wifi a try in afew months😁
how is it?
@@sKanteii haven't get the G.Wifi yet, still afew more months for my current contract to end..am trying out Linksys EA8100-AH MAX-STREAM™ AC2600 wireless router(spare) at the moment but results are not encouraging..
@@That7Days79 not sure whether to get wifi mesh or wireless extender.. singtel 1gbps plan but current wireless extender i get like 100mps 💀
@@sKanteii Extenders are a cheaper alternative expand wifi coverage to tackle wifi drops..just need to add to existing network(router) but mesh system can be used by it's own w/o the need to add to any router.More applicable for dead zones.. the low internet speed you are getting can be due to few reasons, heavy traffic, peak hours, router issues...
Hey great video, I wanted to say my friend has the 3pk and works better then most out there. Thanks for sharing love your channel
Thanks man - it's awesome to have your encouraging words every video! 😀

No problem I think more ppl should subscribe to your channel you have good reviews
Hey it's been a big month for the channel - it will come in time :). Thanks again for the support!
I have the velop by linksys but mine is crap. Service is slow . I have 400 mbps/ 20 and I only get 300 in the wire and the wifi is only 100 mbps so it not worth the money.
Is it sim router?
I have cable internet and an existing Netgear modem.. what do I do?
dan don’t have to do anything. Just connect main google WiFi tower to netgear. And place the other ones where you like.
Muy buenos subtitulos. Gracias por todo. Abrazo desde Argentina
How do i turn off the 5g?
So can i just buy one of these and using it with my pre exist router or do i need to replace it all with Google wifi
It's a router replacement (meaning it's a router), but you still need a modem to hand the internet over to the Google WiFi. Like for my AT&T router/modem combo they gave me, I just turned off the wireless and plugged an Ethernet from the modem to the Google wifi
how is this with gaming and if i buy one or two can i add more later
Good question. I don't play too many games online, but I did Google project stream to play a game over the internet and it worked great. Yes, I believe you can add on as you go if you want
Installed 3 at first. Added 4 more later. A simple button on the app to add more WiFi points.
frrom a country that has bad wifi. 500mb sounds like a dream. for me i want 10mb wifi.
Amazing video Quality
Thanks so much! Always trying to get better :)
I have att fiber 1 gig I have pace 5268ac router it’s inconsistent with signal and speeds hope google WiFi will help with that
Pretty sure it doesn't support that speed.
Like 300mbps max.
Thanks for sharing. That is a HUGE bummer! Maybe try resetting the network?
@@TheSearchForAwesome I have reset my network. I have renamed my network. I have switched the mesh unit locations. I'm about to consider this 'a bad purchase' and begin again with a more reliable option.
Update:
Finally! Someone who has privacy concerns since this is a Google product.
i switched to netgear orbi, the google wifi only have two bands, i don´t get my 400mbit Speed between 3 Rooms with google wifi, with orbi everything is perfect now
Are you checking your speed with the orbi app. I bought an orbi and the app was telling me I was getting 585 plus Mbs but all other speed test told me I got 150 ish Mbs.
I have one puck connected to an OnHub separated by three rooms. I’m hitting 162ish.
tp link deco m4 or this?
Hope to get a respond but is it unlmited data until your payment
Cr7 the best no you need an internet provider this is just for stronger signal
@@derekmartz4479 thanks man
Give Plume WiFi a go.
