    I get tickled when you say “if you don’t want to listen to my reaction, skip to this time…” I click on your channel FOR the reaction, otherwise I’d go straight to the original. Don’t short shrift yourself-you are very good at reacting, explaining, pointing out features, educating. And I appreciate hearing comparisons to the original (especially since I listen primarily to classical and never heard Aerosmith.) Love your work.

    From what I understand, the dilapidated building they’re in used to be a school, and Eli actually attended it as a boy. When he’s singing about “the past is gone,” he’s literally sitting in the ruins of his own past. Intense.

      I never thought of Layne's weird sounds as scary before, but have explained them by positing that he must be an extraterrestrial, which, come to think of it, is pretty scary. 👽😳 I found Sir J's creep-out amusing, though. Thank you for another VP reaction. IMO you cannot find a poor VP performance. I believe their works just get better and better. Each member is a true master of their craft. Layne is probably the best arrangement artist I’ve heard. That he’s a master beatboxer & violinist (and has a beautiful voice) overwhelms me. Eli is a rock god (my age shows here). His voice cuts through me. Cesar is not only delicious honey but also can be quite humorous. What can be said about Geoff? His voice defies description. It just melts flesh from your bones. VP’s guest artists always are incredible. J. None and Omar are my personal favorites. I’m in awe listening to VP’s complex interweaving of sound, their layers of voices interchanging and blending phrases, and their seamless changing keys and rhythms. They transform every song they cover into something original and extraordinary - but I’m biased.

    • @SirHairless
      @SirHairless  4 месяца назад

      From the 9 VP performances I've seen so far - definitely can't seem to find a poor one!

  • @hwyla4416
    @hwyla4416 4 месяца назад +24

    I really love their decision to put that intro part later in the song. Beginning with Eli, all alone, gives this a more introspective feel that the original. Almost as if he is talking (singing) to himself. I was a teenager when the song came out originally. To the me of the time, the song seemed to be about unlimited potential. VoicePlay's cover seems more about perseverance through what all has happened to you.
    This is song #2 of what the Playas (VP Fans) consider their Post-Apocalyptic series. As song #2, it comes with a change of personnel. Earl and J are now gone (they were part of song #1 "Warriors" by Imagine Dragons) and the others have added Cesar and Omar to their group. So, more introspection fits well the 'loss' of two to the presumed zombie hordes. It feels a bit like they are older and wiser.
    Whenever you get to song #3 ("Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes") we no longer have Omar. He is replaced by Anthony. And we get a much more militant feel. Militant as in 'I will fight to protect my home and friends', not as in a military feel.

      @janeramirez8767 4 месяца назад +3

      Exactly! I think you commented essentially the same thing on another reaction video (I hope I replied to it) and it struck me as a very apt description. Aerosmith's original is pretty hopeful, especially for a metal song; VoicePlay's version is less optimistic, more mature. (Makes me wonder how Aerosmith would arrange it today, if it were a brand new song.)

    • @hwyla4416
      @hwyla4416 4 месяца назад +1

      @@janeramirez8767 I find it funny that you refer to it as a 'Metal' song. When it came out, we just considered it 'Rock 'n Roll'. Snicker! I guess the term Metal really didn't hit until the '80s? I think it might have been as a response to what we called 'Corporate Rock' back then, which we felt had lost the true 'rock soul'. I diverged from 'rock' then and entered punk, sliding into alt. rock.

    • @janeramirez8767
      @janeramirez8767 4 месяца назад +2

      @@hwyla4416 My bad. I should have said rock, or perhaps "hard rock"? I was no longer in my teens when the original came out, by the way. Aerosmith was eye-opening after my high-school years filled with Beatles and Beach Boys. To my amazement decades later, when I was making my first playlists, I discovered a lot more Beach Boys than Beatles among my favorites. Good preparation for my mature passion for a capella.

  • @DavideBaroni
    @DavideBaroni 4 месяца назад +14

    Since the very first time I watched this video, I had the clear impressione that they kind of changed the "context" (and thus the meaning) of the song. It was originally a song about youth and its dreams and "THAT" kind of energy. Voiceplay made it a much more mature, adult song, that I feel being about "being adult now", and what has been achieved and what hasn't, and a reflection on growth. I may be wrong, of course. Wouldn't be strange. It happened many times before and it still will in the future. But it's what I feel about it. 🙂

    As before just love your analysis of this one! So Cesar wanted to do/try the high note and Eli said sure 😉. Cesar said in an interview that bit you mentioned as post production they also sang that way - it was just a bit cleaner with a tiny bit of post. Omar was their "5th" member for the Chicago concerts last year - and he was awesome live (as were all of them of course!). They have done quite a few collaborations with him - the first one I believe was "Carry on Wayward Son" (Kansas) - which is another one of my favourites.

    I was so excited to see this pop up. I'm old so, this song has been a favorite for decades. I actually like Voiceplay's version better. I've listened to it a lot, picking out the various pieces. I think I read that its actually Ceaser taking that high note.

    Thank you so much for these reactions and analysis of VP videos. They give me so much smiles and laughter and I learn a few things along the way.
    I highly suggest you checking out 'The Little Mermaid Medely'. if you haven's seen it. It's all-around fun!

    Cesar is actually the baritone of the group! He told Eli he wanted to try and sing the high notes and Eli of course said sure! This is an iconic song, an iconic cover by an iconic group, and an iconic reaction and analysis!!! Love love love your videos, I don't know the the theory like you do but I am passionate about music and love seeing your passion in these reactions!
    Also I can not wait to see your reaction to black hole sun, tht is going to be a doozy of a R/A.

    Fantastic reaction and analysis of VoicePlay's truly great rendition of this song. THANK YOU very much! I love the song itself, VoicePlay never disappoints, and neither do you. 😀
    By total coincidence, just yesterday, I was listening (again) to Dan Vasc's cover of this song, which, I think, is probably much more like the original, but not entirely. I would love it if at some point you would react to that cover, too. Dan posted it on May 21, 2014 (about five months before he turned 25...he's now 34). It was done in his old "studio."
    Thank you again...I totally enjoyed this version and your reaction.

    Thanks for a fun and insightful reaction. There a another two songs in a loose trilogy of this style, Warriors and Seven Nation Army.
    Omar is great in Dragonbon Comes. Jose Rosario Jnr Waa a few years ahead of Cesar and Omar at school. Geoff, Layne were at school together and Kathy's dad taught them choir.
    Now you are getting to know VP a bit better, have a look at the video on hearing loss on Geoff's channel. Not for a reaction video but more for you to get to know them. This is an interview with Kathy, She has a great cameo in a VPs Golden Hour, and in Till Then and Monster Mash on Geoff's channel.
    I really hope you are planning to react to In the Hall of the Mountain King soon.
    I've put a link to a live recording.ruclips.net/video/azk-vIc-ibE/видео.htmlsi=EbHDTyr3p-Z_dqdh The audio quality isn't great but you can hear the pitch accuracy and rhythmic complexity.

    I love the original version of this song and I totally appreciate that Voiceplay is not afraid of taking the risk of creating their own interpretation of this iconic classic. Their creative performances are usually very entertaining and this one included even some spooky moments that managed to scare Sir H a little bit 😂(I agree that Layne’s mysterious sound is quite creepy, but I wouldn’t mind to meet Geoff suddenly emerging from a doorway singing with his crazy-deep voice😁). Your knowledge on music is very impressive and I love watching your multiple skills/strategies used to elucidate and breakdown the intricacies of what they did in such finer detail. I couldn’t be more pleased after watching a video where you explain so many interesting things to us and also play some guitar, the piano, vibe & lip-synch along the chorus… yes… you rock, Sir!🤘

    The guys said that Eli or Cesar could have done that high note but Cesar wanted try so they said ok, and he did it briliantly, with the others in harmony. Geoff has also said that you need to hear Omar and EJ live as the power of their voices is incredible and isn't apparent through a screen. In the short of The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Cesar actually does some whistle notes towards the end.

  • @janeramirez8767

    I've been waiting for this one! I wish no one had "spoiled" it by telling you who sang the iconic octave-up chorus. I would have enjoyed watching you figure it out for yourself. I did smile at your reference to "the three tenors." Cesar joined the band as a baritone, and I assume he's still listed as such, but we're told he asked for the high note on this. They gave him the green light and he knocked it out of the park. (Sorry, one of my other passions is baseball.) Have you reacted yet to "The Dragonborn Comes"? Right after Geoff's vertiginous opening part, Cesar has a luscious short solo in his baritone range. It's my favorite moment in that one.

    I heard this song several times over a decade ago and did not even listen to it again before hearing this cover. So when I first heard this cover, “Was this song like this?” I had a question. However, in the middle of the song, my memory and hearing matched, “Yes, this is the song. ", I thought it was because of the symbolic phrase “dream on,” but your explanation convinced me. It was because of that intro.

    Love how you said you need “mental breaks” in lieu of copyright breaks. Lol I totally get it when it comes to Voice Play! They can be mind blowing at times, especially with these Rock covers! My favorite genre of all time! (Still waiting for Home Free to rock out again (their cover of “Born In the USA) wasn’t in real Rock style, but hey could do something different and make it their own. There are two one-minute shorts of them doing the beginning of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Don’t Stop Believin’”. Anyway, I really enjoyed this analysis. There was much to discuss since there was so much going on.

    Well yeah I mean Cesar has a great part here but I wouldn't say he steals the show. I like Omar here the most, followed by Eli and Geoff. Just cause Cesar voice sounds the most generic to me, even though I love Cesar, let's set that in stone.
    This one always flies so fast to me, I wonder why that impression, maybe the long intro, or maybe it is just shorter.
    Anyways Voiceplay is my favorite acapella group and this is why. They DONT MISS.
